On the nonarchimedean quadratic Lagrange spectra

We study Diophantine approximation in completions of functions fields over finite fields, and in particular in fields of formal Laurent series over finite fields. We introduce a Lagrange spectrum for the approximation by orbits of quadratic irrationals under the modular group. We give nonarchimedean analogs of various well known results in the real case: the closedness and boundedness of the Lagrange spectrum, the existence of a Hall ray, as well as computations of various Hurwitz constants. We use geometric methods of group actions on Bruhat-Tits trees. peerReviewed

A density problem for Sobolev spaces on Gromov hyperbolic domains

We prove that for a bounded domain $\Omega\subset \mathbb R^n$ which is Gromov hyperbolic with respect to the quasihyperbolic metric, especially when $\Omega$ is a finitely connected planar domain, the Sobolev space $W^{1,\,\infty}(\Omega)$ is dense in $W^{1,\,p}(\Omega)$ for any $1\le p<\infty$. Moreover if $\Omega$ is also Jordan or quasiconvex, then $C^{\infty}(\mathbb R^n)$ is dense in $W^{1,\,p}(\Omega)$ for $1\le p<\infty$.

Anomalous Anosov flows revisited

This paper is devoted to higher dimensional Anosov flows and consists of two parts. In the first part, we investigate fiberwise Anosov flows on affine torus bundles which fiber over 3-dimensional Anosov flows. We provide a dichotomy result for such flows --- they are either suspensions of Anosov diffeomorphisms or the stable and unstable distributions have equal dimensions. In the second part, we give a new surgery type construction of Anosov flows, which yields non-transitive Anosov flows in all odd dimensions.

Quasispheres and metric doubling measures

Applying the Bonk-Kleiner characterization of Ahlfors 2-regular quasispheres, we show that a metric two-sphere $X$ is a quasisphere if and only if $X$ is linearly locally connected and carries a weak metric doubling measure, i.e., a measure that deforms the metric on $X$ without much shrinking.

Solutions and positive solutions for superlinear Robin problems

We consider nonlinear, nonhomogeneous Robin problems with a (p − 1)-superlinear reaction term, which need not satisfy the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. We look for positive solutions and prove existence and multiplicity theorems. For the particular case of the p-Laplacian, we prove existence results under a different geometry near the origin.We consider nonlinear, nonhomogeneous Robin problems with a (p − 1)-superlinear reaction term, which need not satisfy the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. On the representation of integers by indefinite binary Hermitian forms

Given an integral indefinite binary Hermitian form f over an imaginary quadratic number field, we give a precise asymptotic equivalent to the number of nonequivalent representations, satisfying some congruence properties, of the rational integers with absolute value at most s by f, as s tends to infinity.

Assouad dimension, Nagata dimension, and uniformly close metric tangents

We study the Assouad dimension and the Nagata dimension of metric spaces. As a general result, we prove that the Nagata dimension of a metric space is always bounded from above by the Assouad dimension. Most of the paper is devoted to the study of when these metric dimensions of a metric space are locally given by the dimensions of its metric tangents. Having uniformly close tangents is not sufficient. What is needed in addition is either that the tangents have dimension with uniform constants independent from the point and the tangent, or that the tangents are unique. Tripled Fixed Point Results for T-Contractions on Abstract Metric Spaces

2014

In this paper we introduce the notion of T-contraction for tripled fi xed points in abstract metric spaces and obtain some tripled fi xed point theorems which extend and generalize well-known comparable results in the literature. To support our results, we present an example and an application to integral equations.

In 1993 a famous article by Raymond Duval highlighted a simple fact: students confuse the mathematical object O, that they are trying to build cognitively, with one of its semiotic representations R(O); he explained that this confusion was due to a sort of inevitable paradox: only someone who has already built O, can recognize R(O) as a representation of O and not as an object in itself. This idea has been extremely influential for researchers in the following years. However, many scholars of semiotics have emphasized the same phenomenon, even if in not quite the same words; in this paper we are going to mention some of them.
