Knowledge, opinions and attitudes of Italian mothers towards HPV vaccination and Pap test
2015
Aim This study evaluated the knowledge and attitudes of Italian mothers – whose daughters had been vaccinated in 2012 – towards primary (anti-HPV vaccination) and secondary (Pap test screening) cervical cancer prevention, as well as sources of information and mother-daughter communication on health issues. Methods The survey – part of a multicenter study carried out in 4 Italian cities (Ferrara, Rome, Cassino and Palermo) – was conducted through self-administered questionnaires. Preservation of the remains and contemporary grafts in the former Mother Church of Santa Margherita di Belice in Sicily: ethics of restoration, conse…
2015
2020
In this work Wunschloses Unglück is read as if it were an impressionistic biography in images. The tale was born out of an attempt to give Handke’s fifty-year-old mother, who died of suicide, back a story and an identity. A way to give content and contours to the woman and to neutralize the depersonalizing effect of the news of the event in the pages of the local newspaper. The story of the mother is actually, from the very beginning, a reflection of the writer on his own work, on the difficulty of writing ‘true’ stories, on the tormented search for a precarious balance between description and documentation, between narration and image, between truth and fiction. Handke would seem to be gui…

From prematurity to parenting stress: The mediating role of perinatal post-traumatic stress disorder
2013
Preterm delivery may lead to the emergence of symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress disorder (PTSD), which may, in turn, affect the quality of the mother-child relationship. The aim of this study is to shed light on the development of parenting stress in mothers of preterm and full-term children. It is hypothesized that PTSD symptoms mediate the relationship between preterm/full-term birth and the levels of parenting stress. Perinatal PTSD, parenting stress and social support were assessed in 156 mothers of full-term children and 87 mothers of preterm children. Mothers of preterm children experienced more post-traumatic stress and parenting stress than mothers of full-term children. However, th…

Surrogate pregnancy, as a technique of assisted reproduction prohibited by Spanish law, raises a number of legal questions than, in certain cases, trascend of the Civil Law. Mothers’ return-to-work reasons and work–family conflict : does a partner involved in childcare make a difference?
2021
Facilitating mothers’ work–family reconciliation upon their return to work can be considered a viable means of enhancing women’s overall employment participation. This study examined return-to-work reasons among mothers with a one-year-old child, how these reasons are related to mothers’ background characteristics, work-to-family conflict (WFC) and family-to-work conflict (FWC) and whether having a partner home caring for the child protects against such conflicts. Results based on survey data collected from Finnish working mothers (N = 573) in 2016 showed four dimensions of return-to-work reasons: personal importance of work, work- and career-related worries, dissatisfaction with stay-at-ho…
Narrating ambivalence of maternal responsibility
2007
Early motherhood and caring for the infant involve a moral ambiguity that is related to the questions of responsibility and vulnerability. By means of the ethics of care, motherhood can be understood as belonging to the moral domain, as relational, and as linked with everyday social situations. The culturally dominant narratives of ‘good mothering’ easily naturalise and normatise maternal agency. This study illustrates the process of adopting responsibility for the infant and the moral ambivalence that is inscribed in early maternal care. The data consist of four interview sessions with each of seven first-time mothers conducted during pregnancy and the first post-natal year. The interview…
