Understanding emerging adulthood from a goal-setting perspective
2010
The chapter fi rst introduces the concept of emerging adulthood as a period of life that is characterized by instabilities and fl uctuations. Then, the role of goal setting and aspirations in individual development during this stage of life is discussed. Following this, seven chapters of the present special issue are introduced, and the ways in which goal processes affect individual trajectories and outcomes are discussed. The chapter concludes with a discussion of future perspectives in the fi eld, such as the need to investigate the relationships between goals and goal adjustment, the need to carry out cross-cultural comparisons, as well as the need to develop intervention based on goal a…
QUALITY MARKET ORIENTATION
2005
This paper analyzes the effects of market orientation from two perspectives. First, its direct influences on tourist agencies' perceived performance, and its indirect ones on per- formance through the perceived value of market information. Second, direct effects on the perceived service quality offered by the firm and indirect influences derived from the utiliza- tion of quality measurement systems are analyzed. Hypothesized relationships are tested in an empirical study of tourist managers. Research findings confirm the proposed relationships, except the influence of using quality measurement systems on service. A positive direct influ- ence between perceived service quality and performanc…

GPS/INS Systems for compilation of digital large-scale orthophotos
2004
The paper describes the first results of a study, supported by an Italian research project “Integrated Inertial Positioning Systems in Aerial Photogrammetry” on the potential use of these techniques for production of digital large scale orthophotos. The study has been done with aerial photographs collected from two different flights executed in Sicily: the former, relating to the city of Palermo, at average scale of 1:9300; the latter, over the city of Catania, at average scale of 1:2000. For both flights the orthorectification was carried out by direct georeferencing methods and by traditional photogrammetric techniques, using ground control points surveyed by means GPS techniques and aeri…
Luigi Farrauto has been able to put together two aspects of his life, the professional and the passionate ones, merging them in a sole and unique specificity, which distinguishes him both as a graphic designer and as a young man. His passion for travel and study and for the design of systems of information and of signs, penetrate and feed each other, generating a continuous cross-reference which perpetuates itself without any apparent effort. The traveler’s gaze i…
Is There Anything New to Say About SIFT Matching?
2020
SIFT is a classical hand-crafted, histogram-based descriptor that has deeply influenced research on image matching for more than a decade. In this paper, a critical review of the aspects that affect SIFT matching performance is carried out, and novel descriptor design strategies are introduced and individually evaluated. These encompass quantization, binarization and hierarchical cascade filtering as means to reduce data storage and increase matching efficiency, with no significant loss of accuracy. An original contextual matching strategy based on a symmetrical variant of the usual nearest-neighbor ratio is discussed as well, that can increase the discriminative power of any descriptor. Th…
Activation of the vocational and personal development (ADVP): an innovative educational orientation methodology.
2015
Progress in orientation educational practices in Italy has led to the emergence of several methods designed to help the development of personal and career aims. The several evaluations, which have been carried out, show that changes are first cognitive and specifically involve professional representations: experimental subjects used more descriptors and different descriptors to represent an occupation which interests them. These changes are also cognitive with participants stating that they have been involved in experiences and in activities, have sought information, etc. These initial results once again raise the question of instruments needing to be developed for such evaluation, that of …
Does Attentional Style Moderate the Relationship between Time Perspective and Social Network Addiction? A Cross-Sectional Study on a Sample of Social…
2021
The present study investigates the role of attentional style as a moderator variable between temporal perspective and social network addiction, since little is known about users’ cognitive variables involved in this kind of addictive behavior. To achieve this goal, a sample of 186 volunteers and anonymous social networking sites users (M = 34%; F = 66%; Mage = 22.54 years; SD = 3.94; range: 18 ÷ 45 years) participated in a cross-sectional study. All participants filled out self-report instruments measuring temporal perspective, internal vs. external attentional style, and social network addiction. The results align with the previous literature and show that present fatalistic and past negat…
Cultural and psychological variables predicting academic dishonesty: a cross-sectional study in nine countries
2021
Academic dishonesty has serious consequences for human lives, social values, and economy. The main aim of the study was to explore a model of relations between personal and cultural variables and academic dishonesty. The authors administered the Academic Dishonesty Scale to measure academic dishonesty, the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale to measure distress, the Almost Perfect Scale – Revised to measure perfectionism, the Brief Self-Control Scale to measure self-control, and the Singelis Scale to measure independent self-construal. Th…
