Spurious finite-size instabilities in nuclear energy density functionals
2013
It is known that some well-established parametrizations of the EDF do not always provide converged results for nuclei and a qualitative link between this finding and the appearance of finite-size instabilities of SNM near saturation density when computed within the RPA has been pointed out. We seek for a quantitative and systematic connection between the impossibility to converge self-consistent calculations of nuclei and the occurrence of finite-size instabilities in SNM for the example of scalar-isovector (S=0, T=1) instabilities of the standard Skyrme EDF. We aim to establish a stability criterion based on computationally-friendly RPA calculations of SNM that is independent on the functi…
GénétiQueneau
2019
Portable microwave assisted extraction: An original concept for green analytical chemistry.
2013
International audience; This paper describes a portable microwave assisted extraction apparatus (PMAE) for extraction of bioac-tive compounds especially essential oils and aromas directly in a crop or in a forest. The developed procedure, based on the concept of green analytical chemistry, is appropriate to obtain direct in-field information about the level of essential oils in natural samples and to illustrate green chemical lesson and research. The efficiency of this experiment was validated for the extraction of essential oil of rosemary directly in a crop and allows obtaining a quantitative information on the content of essential oil, which was similar to that obtained by conventional m…
Robust model-following control of parallel UPS single-phase inverters
2008
This paper presents a robust control technique applied to modular uninterruptible power-supply (UPS) inverters operating in parallel. When compared to conventional proportional-integral (PI) control, the proposed technique improves the response of the output voltage to load steps and to high distorted output currents, reducing the distortion of the output voltage. Furthermore, an excellent distribution of currents between modules is achieved, resulting in fine power equalization between the inverters on stream. The crossover frequency of the different loop gains involved is moderate, so that robustness to variations of the operation point and to modeling uncertainties is achieved. A compara…
The liquid-solid transition of hard discs: first-order transition or Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young scenario?
2002
We consider the question of whether a two-dimensional hard-disc fluid has a first-order transition from the liquid state to the solid state as in the three-dimensional melting-crystallization transition or whether one has two subsequent continuous transitions, from the liquid to the hexatic phase and then to the solid phase, as proposed by Kosterlitz, Thouless, Halperin, Nelson and Young (KTHNY). Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the fluid that study the growth of the bond orientational correlation length, and of the crystal are discussed. The emphasis is on a recent consistency test of the KTHNY renormalization group (RG) scenario, where MC simulations are used to estimate the bare elastic c…
Study of the MOCVD growth of ZnO on GaAs substrates: Influence of the molar ratio of the precursors on structural and morphological properties
2007
Abstract ZnO thin films were grown by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) on GaAs(100) and GaAs(111)A substrates. The growth experiments were performed at temperatures ranging from 290 to 500 ∘C and atmospheric pressure. Diethylzinc (DEZn) and tertiary butanol (tBuOH) were used as Zn and O precursors, respectively. The crystallinity of the grown films was studied by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and the thickness and morphology were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The influence of substrate orientation and molar ratio of the precursors on the crystalline orientation and morphology of the ZnO grown films was analysed.
Oxygen Consumption Rate of Tumour Cells as a Function of their Proliferative Status
1987
The oxygen consumption rate \(\left( \dot{Q}{{O}_{2}} \right)\) of EMT6/Ro-cells cultured as monolayers was investigated as a function of their proliferative status. The transition of these cells from the exponential to the plateau growth phase was associated with a continuous decrease in \(\dot{Q}{{O}_{2}}\) per single cell. This decrease can partially be attributed to a corresponding decline in cellular volume. In addition, the \(\dot{Q}{{O}_{2}}\) per cell volume was also reduced during the passage of the cells through the growth phase described. The results lead to the conclusion that a reduction in cellular volume and factors which are still unknown may contribute to the metabolic chan…
Liquid crystals in the series of 2,4,6-tristyryl-1,3,5-triazines
2004
Abstract Alkaline condensation reactions of 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazine ( 1 ) and substituted benzaldehydes ( 2a – n ) yield 2,4,6-tristyryl-1,3,5-triazines ( 3a – n ). A sufficient number and length of the alkoxy chains at the benzene rings provide liquid crystalline phases Col hd . A special structure was found for compound 3i with 9 hexyloxy chains; it exists in the solid state in a helical columnar arrangement, which is transformed by heating to a hexagonal columnar mesophase. Irradiation of the mesophases of 3i – 3m leads to partial cyclodimerization reactions, which cause different textures and lower the clearing points. The border line between the irradiated and the unirradiated z…
Structure Of Complexes Of Helix-5 From Bax With Lipid Membranes
2009
Bax is a proapoptotic protein implicated in the release of cell-death activating factors from the mitochondrial intermembrane space. Although the structure of the membrane-bound forms of Bax is unknown, it has been proposed to form proteolipidic pores. Studies with synthetic lipid vesicles have shown that fragments encompassing helix-5 of Bax retain a membrane permeabilization ability that is similar to that of the full-length protein. Here we report on the structure of peptide-membrane complexes formed by a Bax helix-5 peptide and lipid bilayers. The relative orientation of the peptide and the lipids are determined using site-specific infrared spectroscopy, assisted by isotopic labeling of…
Lactic acid bacteria strains for bioprotection application with cells entrapment in biopolymeric matrices
2013
Among the various methods to control foodborne pathogenic and/or food spoilage microorganisms in food chain, bioprotective lactic acid bacteria (LAB) appear to be promising tools for food biopreservation. This collaborative study, between PAPC (Agrosup Dijon, University of Burgundy) and BioDyMIA (University Lyon1-Lyon Isara) laboratories, concerned the development of sodium alginate/sodium caseinate polymeric matrices intended to entrap LAB cells selected for their anti-Listeria spp. activity. First, 4 LAB strains from 19 LAB strains were selected for their anti-Listeria spp. activity: this screening was performed by the method of agar diffusion against three Listeria spp strains. Then, ant…
