An Inquiry Based Approach to the study of energy exchange by thermal radiation

2012

A teaching-learning sequence regarding the investigation of energy exchange by thermal radiation, conduction and convection is under development within the context of “Establish”, a FP7 European Project aimed at promoting and developing Inquiry Based Science Education in European Secondary Schools. Here we present some relevant laboratory activities of this inquiry-oriented teaching/learning sequence for secondary school level students (or even first-level university ones), aimed at investigating the physics of energy transmission by thermal radiation. In traditional laboratory work, the focus of students activities is mostly dedicated on verifying information previously transferred by the …

Teaching English in Finnish upper secondary schools: How English is taught and what are the most effective ways of learning

2010

Englannin kielen käyttö on lisääntynyt paljon lyhyessä ajassa globalisoituvan yhteiskunnan seurauksena, minkä vuoksi on tärkeää saada selville, onko suomalaisissa lukioissa annettu opetus nimenomaan oppilaiden mielestä höydyllistä ja tehokasta. Aihetta on tutkittu viimeksi Suomessa kaksikymmentä vuotta sitten ja tämän vuoksi uusi tutkimus oli tarpeel…

Towards expert knowledge? A comparison between a constructivist and a traditional learning environment in the university

1999

Abstract This research monograph examines the potential of constructivist learning environments for developing prerequisites of expert knowledge during university studies. Drawing on recent theories of the development of expert knowledge and on the constructivist view of learning, an experiment was conducted in an educational psychology course. The primary purpose of the study was to compare the learning outcomes of students who studied the course material in a constructivist learning environment with those of students who learned it under traditional teaching and studying conditions. Students in the constructivist learning environment acquired more diversified knowledge. In addition, a the…

Comparing the applicability of two learning theories for knowledge transfer in information system implementation training

2004

This study reviews two traditional learning theories from the viewpoint of knowledge transfer in information system implementation training. The main goal of this study is to determine which is more applicable from the view of knowledge transfer in this context. In this study, behaviourist learning theory is found suitable for the transfer of data and information. Being more learner-centered, constructivist learning theory suits better for information system implementation training, as it enables combining system specific knowledge with knowledge of the existing organisational processes. This creates new organisation-specific knowledge necessary for the effective use of the information syst…

1993

2011

This paper describes the outcomes of an teaching experiment conducted in the seminar held at the Faculty Engineering of Palermo University. The theme of the seminar focused on undergraduate experiment that yields the velocity distribution of thermionic electrons by analyzing the I-V characteristics of diodes and triodes. By using a simple model, the velocity distribution of thermionic electrons emitted by the vacuum tube cathode can be described by Maxwell's distribution. The experiment allows students to focus on the distribution function more than on difficulties arising from the complexity of thermionic emission.

Preparing students to participate to the didactic activities of university teacher

2016

'School adopts an experiment': the photoluminescence in extra-virgin olive oil and in tonic water

2011

We report a laboratory activity, carried out along with high- and secondary-school students, that can be done to increase the interest of the young in scientific studies. Groups of selected students ‘adopted’ experiments at physics research laboratories, under the guidance of university researchers. Subsequently, the students demonstrated the experiments to the public at large during the annual science festival organized in Palermo by the association PalermoScienza, in collaboration with the University of Palermo. Experiments on the magnetic levitation of superconductors and on the photoluminescence of several substances were proposed. We discuss the experiment on photoluminescence as a cas…
