An inquiry-based approach to Maxwell distribution: a case study with engineering students

The concept of distribution is a fundamental component of statistical thinking. This paper describes a teaching approach for it that uses a specific activity related to the field of statistical mechanics. The concept of the velocity distribution of a particle system is dealt with using an inquiry-based approach involving an experimental examination of Maxwell’s distribution. Some outcomes of a teaching experiment held at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Palermo, Italy are described.

En este estudio exploratorio se evalúa el conocimiento didáctico del contenido (CDC) sobre pilas galvánicas de profesores de secundaria en formación y en ejercicio. Además, este conocimiento se ha relacionado con los enfoques de enseñanza que prefieren. Para este propósito, se ha adaptado el instrumento CoRe de Loughran, Mulhall y Berry (2004) considerando dos situaciones: pila Daniell y pila voltaica simple. La muestra se compuso de 25 profesores en formación y de 15 profesores en ejercicio. Este estudio propone la implementación de una secuencia didáctica para facilitar el aprendizaje de los conceptos de sustancia, sustancia simple y compuesto en educación secundaria. Para su elaboración se ha partido del análisis histórico y las concepciones alternativas más frecuentes de los estudiantes respecto a estos conceptos. Abstract Two instructional approaches on comprehension monitoring in English as FL are contrasted. Although using the same materials (elementary science texts), one of them is based on tasks focusing on vocabulary and grammar, and the other one is based on main ideas identification and textual coherence. Tutkimus tähtää löytämään erilaisia kaksikielisiä opetusmetodeja ja korostamanaan niitä metodeja, jotka opettajat kuvaavat hyvin toimiviksi. Tarkoituksena on myös tarkastella tekijöitä, joita opettajat ottavat huomioon valitessaan kaksikielisen opetusmetodin. Tätä tukimusta voidaan kutsua tapaustutkimukseksi.
