Selective Binding of Collagen Subtypes by Integrin α1I, α2I, and α10I Domains

2001

Four integrins, namely alpha(1)beta(1), alpha(2)beta(1), alpha(10)beta(1), and alpha(11)beta(1), form a special subclass of cell adhesion receptors. They are all collagen receptors, and they recognize their ligands with an inserted domain (I domain) in their alpha subunit. We have produced the human integrin alpha(10)I domain as a recombinant protein to reveal its ligand binding specificity. In general, alpha(10)I did recognize collagen types I-VI and laminin-1 in a Mg(2+)-dependent manner, whereas its binding to tenascin was only slightly better than to albumin. When alpha(10)I was tested together with the alpha(1)I and alpha(2)I domains, all three I domains seemed to have their own collag…

Weak chord-arc curves and double-dome quasisymmetric spheres

2014

Let $\Omega$ be a planar Jordan domain and $\alpha>0$. We consider double-dome-like surfaces $\Sigma(\Omega,t^{\alpha})$ over $\overline{\Omega}$ where the height of the surface over any point $x\in\overline{\Omega}$ equals $\text{dist}(x,\partial\Omega)^{\alpha}$. We identify the necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of $\Omega$ and $\alpha$ so that these surfaces are quasisymmetric to $\mathbb{S}^2$ and we show that $\Sigma(\Omega,t^{\alpha})$ is quasisymmetric to the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ if and only if it is linearly locally connected and Ahlfors $2$-regular.

A029 Identification of polymorphisms in the gene encoding secreted phospholipase A2 group X and study of their role in coronary artery disease. The a…

2009

Human secreted phospholipases A2 (sPLA2s) represent novel attractive therapeutic targets and biomarkers in coronary artery diseases (CAD). We have shown that human Group X sPLA2 (hGX sPLA2) is present in atherosclerotic lesions and that hGX sPLA2 modified LDL induces foam cell formation. To elucidate whether hGX sPLA2 has a causative role in CAD we have screened the human PLA2G10 gene to identify frequent polymorphisms, and we have examined their possible association with cardiovascular end-points and intermediate inflammatory phenotypes in a large prospective study of patients with CAD (the AtheroGene study). Although no significant association was found between the various polymorphisms i…

Methylation status of VTRNA2-1/nc886 is stable across populations, monozygotic twin pairs and in majority of tissues.

2022

Aims & methods: The aim of this study was to characterize the methylation level of a polymorphically imprinted gene, VTRNA2-1/nc886, in human populations and somatic tissues.48 datasets, consisting of more than 30 tissues and >30,000 individuals, were used. Results: nc886 methylation status is associated with twin status and ethnic background, but the variation between populations is limited. Monozygotic twin pairs present concordant methylation, whereas similar to 30% of dizygotic twin pairs present discordant methylation in the nc886 locus. The methylation levels of nc886 are uniform across somatic tissues, except in cerebellum and skeletal muscle. Conclusion: The nc886 imprint may be est…

Padziļināto digitālo prasmju uzlabošana Latvijā

2019

Ņemot vērā Latvijas darba tirgū eksistējošo IT specialistu trūkumu, šī maģistra darba mērķis ir paplašināt digitālo prasmju izglītības materiālu spektru un to piejamību Latvijā. Tas tiek panākts izmantojot Start(it).lv fonda eksitējošo tīmekļa vietni uz kuras bāzes tika izveidots projekts "Padziļināto digitālo prasmju uzlabošana Latvijā". Maģistra darbs risina konkrētu problēmu par padziļināto digitālo prasmju šauro piedāvājumu un eksistējošo kursu pieejamību ikvienam Latvijas iedzīvotājam. Darba rezultātā ir izstrādāts projekts, kurā tiek aprakstīts kā īstenot Start(it) fonda eksistējošo tīmekļa vietnes modernizāciju un tās pielāgošanu Skola2030 projektam.

Low-temperature molecular layer deposition using monifunctional aromatic precursors and ozone-based ring-opening reactions

2017

Molecular layer deposition (MLD) is an increasingly used deposition technique for producing thin coatings consisting of purely organic or hybrid inorganic-organic materials. When organic materials are prepared, low deposition temperatures are often required to avoid decomposition, thus causing problems with low vapor pressure precursors. Monofunctional compounds have higher vapor pressures than traditional bi- or trifunctional MLD precursors, but do not offer the required functional groups for continuing the MLD growth in subsequent deposition cycles. In this study, we have used high vapor pressure monofunctional aromatic precursors in combination with ozone-triggered ring-opening reactions…

English Validation of the Parental Socialization Scale—ESPA29

2017

Parenting styles have traditionally been studied following the classical two-dimensional orthogonal model of parental socialization. The Parental Socialization Scale ESPA29 is used to measure the four styles of parental socialization through the acceptance/involvement and strictness/imposition dimensions. The ESPA29 scale is a developmentally appropriate measure of parenting styles, which has been validated in several languages including Spanish, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese. In this study, the English translation of the ESPA29 was evaluated. The objective of the work is to test the ESPA29’s structure of parenting practices with a United States sample measuring parenting practices usin…

Polymorphonuclear leukocyte membrane fluidity and cytosolic Ca2+ concentration in subjects with vascular atherosclerotic disease subdivided according…

2006

An abnormal activation state of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) plays a key role in organ injury induced by vascular atherosclerotic disease (VAD) and diabetes mellitus (DM). PMN membrane fluidity and cytosolic Ca2+ content can be considered markers of PMN activation. In this research we evaluated the PMN membrane fluidity and cytosolic Ca2+ content in VAD subjects with and without type 2 DM and examined the association between these parameters and the mono- or polyvascular localization. We enrolled 155 VAD subjects, including 92 non-diabetic (group A: mean age 63.6 +/- 9.2 years) and 63 diabetic patients (group B: mean age 65.4 +/- 7.8 years). Among group A 63 patients had monovascular …

Cloning and characterization of CSP37, a novel gene encoding a putative membrane protein of Candida albicans.

1997

In the course of an analysis of the functions and assembly of the cell wall of Candida albicans, we have cloned and characterized a gene, which we designated CSP37 (cell surface protein), encoding a 37-kDa polypeptide which is a membrane-associated protein. The gene was isolated by immunological screening of a DNA library constructed from mycelial cells with a polyclonal serum raised against cell walls of this morphology. Analysis of the nucleotide sequence of a corresponding genomic DNA fragment revealed a single open reading frame which encodes a predicted protein of 321 amino acids with no significant homology to others in the databases. Disruption of the CSP37 gene by the method describ…
