Haemolymphatic parameters in two aquaculture crustacean species Cherax destructor (Clark, 1836) and Cherax quadricarinatus (von Martens, 1868)

2021

The growing demand for animal proteins of aquatic origin such as fish, molluscs and crustaceans have prompted some European and Italian companies to focus their attention on some species of freshwater crustaceans such as Cherax destructor and Cherax quadricarinatus. They are among the largest freshwater decapods, matures early, females can lay over a thousand eggs in a single brood and has a broad environmental tolerance. All these characteristics make it highly appreciated species for aquaculture and few years ago their breeding has spread to Europe and recently also in Italy (Sicily). Although some commercial yabby farms have been studied these species from different points of view (dieta…

Digeneans of cetaceans: taxonomy, evolutionary history and host specificity.

2016

Parasitism is an extremely successful lifestyle among animals. In fact, every free-living organism is believed to harbour at least a parasite species, and cetaceans are not the exception. Host-parasite systems offer a suitable model for studying systematics, evolution, biogeography and ecology because the evolutionary fate of parasites is linked to that of their hosts. In particular, present-day associations between cetaceans and their parasites have been shaped by unique historical events. The parasites of the terrestrial ancestors of cetaceans likely faced an ecological barrier when their hosts colonized the marine environment; it is postulated that during the process terrestrial parasite…

Data from: Assessing cetacean surveys throughout the Mediterranean Sea: a gap analysis in environmental space

2019

Heterogeneous data collection in the marine environment has led to large gaps in our knowledge of marine species distributions. To fill these gaps, models calibrated on existing data may be used to predict species distributions in unsampled areas, given that available data are sufficiently representative. Our objective was to evaluate the feasibility of mapping cetacean densities across the entire Mediterranean Sea using models calibrated on available survey data and various environmental covariates. We aggregated 302,481 km of line transect survey effort conducted in the Mediterranean Sea within the past 20 years by many organisations. Survey coverage was highly heterogeneous geographicall…

Phylogeny, epidemiology and microhabitat preferences of lungworms (Pseudaliidae) in cetaceans from teh Western Mediterranean

2023

A dammarane-type saponin from the roots of Ampelozizyphus amazonicus.

1993

A new C31 dammarane-type triterpenoid saponin has been isolated from the roots of Ampelozizyphus amazonicus. Its structure was elucidated to be ampelozigenin-15 alpha-O-acetyl- 3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1--2)-beta-D-glucopyranoside by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic methods, and by chemical transformations. Ampelozigenin is a novel triterpene, (20R,22R)-16 beta,22:16 alpha, 30-diepoxydammar-24(24')- methylene-3 beta, 15 alpha, 20-triol.

Acetogenins from Annonaceae

1997

In 1982, Jolad et al. isolated uvaricin, a new antitumor agent, from the roots of Uvaria acuminata (Annonaceae), a bis-tetrahydrofuranoid fatty acid lactone (1) related to polyketides or acetogenins. However, it contained a number of original structural characteristics, particularly a linear acetogenin, a bis-tetrahydrofuran pattern flanked by hydroxyls and a terminal unsaturated lactone. Two years later, Dabrah and Sneden (2, 3 and Cortes et al. (4) described four new products presenting the same structural characteristics. Because these products formed a new class of natural compounds, and are only found in species belonging to the family of Annonaceae, they are commonly called acetogenin…

Two new triterpene saponins from Eryngium campestre.

2005

Two new triterpene saponins, 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->4)]-beta-D-glucuronopyranosyl-22-O-angeloyl-R1-barrigenol (1) and 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->2)-[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->4)]-beta-D-glucuronopyranosyl-22-O-beta,beta-dimethylacryloyl-A1-barrigenol (2), were isolated from the roots of Eryngium campestre (Apiaceae). Their structures were established mainly by 2D NMR techniques and mass spectrometry.

New phenolics, cytotoxicity and chemosystematic significance of Atriplex semibaccata

2019

Abstract The chemical characterization of the 70% hydromethanolic extract of Atriplex semibaccata (family: Chenopodiaceae) afforded a new methoxylated flavonol triglycoside, atrisemibaccatoside A (1), and a new lignanamide, (N-[(E)-m-hydroxycinnamoyl]tyramine (7), as well as, five known flavonols (2–6) and two lignanamides (8–9). The structures of the isolated compounds were established depending upon LR&HR-FAB-MS, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analyses. The cytotoxic activity of the isolated compounds (1–4, and 7–9) was investigated. Compounds 7, 8 and 9 weakly inhibited the proliferation of leukemia CCRF-CEM cells with IC50 values of 78.5, 46.3, and 71.2 μg/ml, respectively, and exhibited n…

Widespread contribution of methane-cycle bacteria to the diets of lake profundal chironomid larvae.

2008

Reports of unexpectedly 13C-depleted chironomid larvae in lakes have led to an hypothesis that significant transfer of detrital organic matter to chironomid larvae may occur via methane-cycle bacteria. However, to date little is known of how such transfer might vary across species and lakes. We gathered data from 87 lakes to determine how widespread this phenomenon might be and to define boundaries for its likely magnitude. Carbon stable isotope values of chironomid larvae varied greatly between taxa. Very marked 13C-depletion was evident only in certain taxa, especially Chironomus plumosus, C. anthracinus, and C. tenuistylus, all characteristic of eutrophic or dystrophic lakes and known to…
