Impact of cyclic mechanical stress on the electrical contact resistance between gas diffusion layer and bipolar plates in Polymer Electrolyte Membran…

2018

WHEC 2018, 22nd edition of the WORLD HYDROGEN ENERGY CONFERENCE, Rio de Janeiro, BRESIL, 17-/06/2018 - 22/06/2018; and collisions) and the mechanical clamping stress applied during the stack assembly. The internal stresses come from the shrinking and the swelling of the membrane caused by water content and the difference between the thermal expansion coefficients of the cell components. These mechanical stresses have an impact on the global fuel cell's performance and one of the most sensitive cell's components to this pressure is the Gas Diffusion Layer (GDL). This layer, assembled with the membrane electrode assembly, provides the reactant gases, evacuates the produced heat and …

Determination of the effective permittivity of dielectric mixtures with the transmission line matrix methodDetermination of the effective permittivit…

2007

In this article, the effective permittivity of two-phase dielectric mixtures is calculated by applying the transmission line matrix (TLM) method. Two slightly different TLM algorithms are considered: a hybrid approach, which combines the TLM method with a subgriding technique based on dual capacitor circuits, to allow a refined description of the material, and a standard or pure TLM approach, which uses a mesh size smaller than the typical dimension of insertions in order to appropriately describe details of the geometry. A study of the statistical distribution of permittivity for insertions in random positions is also presented, showing that the effective permittivity of the mixture tends …

The World Hobbit Project in Finland : Audience responses and transmedial user practices

2016

This article examines audience engagement with The Hobbit fantasy film trilogy as a participatory and transmedial experience. To do so, we use the data collected by The World Hobbit Project in order to investigate the transmedial user practices of the Finnish audience of the trilogy. We will, firstly, look at what kinds of transmedial user practices – and transmedia users – emerge from our data. Secondly, we will ask the following questions: How do transmedia users receive and experience the films? What are the meanings assigned to The Hobbit films and the fantasy texts and user practices related to them, and what do these meanings tell of the broader meanings and uses of fantasy? Doing so,…

It has come to our attention that the PITER framework investigator, Alessandro Federico, was incorrectly listed as F. Alessandro in the original manuscript. Please note that the correct name of this author is Alessandro Federico (2nd University of Naples). The correct list of PITER investigators is in the footnote below.

In Situ Heating TEM Study of Onion-like WS2 and MoS2 Nanostructures Obtained via MOCVD

2007

We report on the in situ heating transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study of WS2 and MoS2 nanoparticles obtained from metal–organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The general behavior of MoS2 and WS2 is similar: Round, amorphous particles in the pristine sample transform to hollow, onion-like particles upon annealing. A second type of particle with straight layers exhibits only minor changes. A significant difference between both compounds could be demonstrated in their crystallization behavior. The results of the in situ heating experiments are compared to those obtained from an ex situ annealing process under Ar.

Molecular surveillance of norovirus, 2005–16 : an epidemiological analysis of data collected from the NoroNet network

2018

BACKGROUND: The development of a vaccine for norovirus requires a detailed understanding of global genetic diversity of noroviruses. We analysed their epidemiology and diversity using surveillance data from the NoroNet network.METHODS: We included genetic sequences of norovirus specimens obtained from outbreak investigations and sporadic gastroenteritis cases between 2005 and 2016 in Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Africa. We genotyped norovirus sequences and analysed sequences that overlapped at open reading frame (ORF) 1 and ORF2. Additionally, we assessed the sampling date and country of origin of the first reported sequence to assess when and where novel drift variants originated.FINDINGS: W…

TEM and Raman characterisation of diamond micro- and nanostructures in carbon spherules from upper soils

2008

Carbonaceous spherules of millimeter size diameter and found in the upper soils throughout Europe are investigated by TEM, including SAED, HRTEM and EELS, and Raman spectroscopy. The spherules consist primarily of carbon and have an open cell-like internal structure. Most of the carbon appears in an amorphous state, but different morphologies of nano- and microdiamond particles have also been discovered including flake shapes. The latter observation, together with the original findings of some of these spherules in crater-like structures in the landscape and including severely deformed rocks with some spherules being embedded in the fused crust of excavated rocks, points towards unique cond…

The effects of nitric oxide on striatal serotoninergic transmission involve multiple targets: an in vivo microdialysis study in the awake rat

2004

Abstract The role of endogenous nitric oxide (NO) in N -methyl- d -aspartate (NMDA)-induced modulation of serotonin (5-HT) release in the striatum of freely moving rats has been studied using microdialysis technique. NMDA-induced increase in 5-HT release was significantly inhibited by selective nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) inhibitor S -methylthiocitrulline (S-Me-TC), ONOO − scavenger l -cysteine ( l -cys), and guanylate cyclase (GC) inhibitor 1 H [1,2,4]oxadiazolo[4,3- a ]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ). These data suggest that modulation of 5-HT levels is linked to the formation of NO produced by NMDA receptor activation and that endogenously produced NO increases 5-HT concentrations both by stimul…

Channel estimation and transmit power control in wireless body area networks

2015

Wireless body area networks have recently received much attention because of their application to assisted living and remote patient monitoring. For these applications, energy minimisation is a critical issue since, in many cases, batteries cannot be easily replaced or recharged. Reducing energy expenditure by avoiding unnecessary high transmission power and minimising frame retransmissions is therefore crucial. In this study, a transmit power control scheme suitable for IEEE 802.15.6 networks operating in beacon mode with superframe boundaries is proposed. The transmission power is modulated, frame-by-frame, according to a run-time estimation of the channel conditions. Power measurements u…
