Backgrounds and aims: Adrenal insufficiency (AI) has been reported in patients with stable cirrhosis. A lack of substrates has been suggested as a possible contributing pathogenic mechanism leading to glucocorticoid deficiency in these subjects. To better explore this hypothesis, we studied lipoproteins in cirrhotics with and without AI. Methods. A total of 81 cirrhotic patients and 30 normal volunteers were enrolled. Combined potentiometric titration and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) methods were used to study the interactions of nickel(II) ions with the N-terminal fragments and histidine-rich fragments of Hpn-like protein from two Helicobacter pylori strains (11637 and 26695). AbstractA recombinant non-glycosylated and acidic form of avidin was designed and expressed in soluble form in baculovirus-infected insect cells. The mutations were based on the same principles that guided the design of the chemically and enzymatically modified avidin derivative, known as NeutraLite Avidin. In this novel recombinant avidin derivative, five out of the eight arginine residues were replaced with neutral amino acids, and two of the lysine residues were replaced by glutamic acid. The photolysis of iodide anions promotes the reaction of carbon dioxide with hydrogen sulfide or thiols to quantitatively yield formic acid and sulfur or disulfides. The reaction proceeds in acetonitrile and aqueous solutions, at atmospheric pressure and room temperature by irradiation using a low-pressure mercury lamp. This transition-metal-free photocatalytic process for CO2 capture coupled with H2 S removal may have been relevant as a prebiotic carbon dioxide fixation.
