Les classes à plusieurs cours
1998
Multigrade teaching in primary education has often been criticized because this context was assumed to be detrimental for student learning. After having shown that this assumption was empirically wrong, the paper stresses that students who went through this type of education at the primary level perform (better learning and less repetition) also better in lower secondary school.
Premier juillet : l'école est-elle réellement finie ?
1998
One often thinks that the long period of summer holidays has negative effects on the knowledge of pupils. A study undertaken in a junior secondary school in Côte d'Or (France) brings more optimistic results. Indeed, the sampled students are found on average not only to retain their knowledge, but also sometimes, and more frequently when they come from economicly richer backgrounds, to even improve their scores between June and September, and this all the more when they have studied during the period.
Etre gardé ou non par la mère, quelles incidences scolaires chez les enfants de grande section ?
1997
The paper presents a study focuses on the impact of various types of child-care on academic acquisitions observed at the end of kindergarten. Even if children cared for by their own mother do obtain poorer scores, the effect of a specific type of care, other things being equal, proves nearly equal to zero. But some more precise effects (of one type of care on a specific performance), and interaction effects (with factors such as sex difference) are observed too. It would be interesting for research to investigate more throroughly the quality of various types of care.

Les vacances d'été nuisent-elles aux acquisitions scolaires ?
1999
International audience; The length of summer holidays is often seen as having negative consequences on pupuls' learning and knowledge. The result of a research study carried out in a Côte d'Or secondary school bring a more qualified view. These results go against popular opinion which holds that school holidays are too long and cause pupils to forget things learnt during the previous school year. Indeed, on average across the sample studied, not only do pupils not forget their knowledge, but some, and in particular those from more favoured backgrounds, improve their knowledge between June and September, and all the more so as they have worked during the summer. This article describes first …

Incidences des activités musicales en grande section de maternelle sur les apprentissages en cours préparatoire
1996
The impact of musical activities on learning achievements at the end of grade 1. When comparing two groups of pupils, one having benefited from a specific music program before entering grade 1 (2 or 4 hours per week at the least preprimary grade) and the other not, one finds out that this experimentation had a lasting positive impact on learning achievements. Indeed, an assessment of school performances in reading and mathematics at the end of grade 1 also shows that this impact proves even stronger one year later, especially when considering less bright children, non french or pupils with shorter preschooling experience. Hence, this experimentation has proved beneficial both on a pedagogic…
