Branded Entertainment

2017

Branded entertainment is the insertion of a brand within an entertainment property in such a way that the line between entertainment and advertising becomes blurred (Moore, 2006). This hybrid message develops in an increasingly convergent environment in which editorial content and advertising content are blended (Shrum, 2004). This indirect approach to deliver brand messages is gaining momentum as a marketing communications tool to engage consumers with brand messages in a non-interruptive and entertainment context. By using branded films, advergames, and other advertainment-type genres, advertisers aim to enhance consumers´ brand perceptions, brand awareness, brand recall, and brand recogn…

Generic Advertising, Brand Advertising and Price Competition: An Analysis of Free-Riding Effects and Coordination Mechanisms

2010

The main purpose of generic advertising is to enlarge the total market demand rather than capturing further slices from competitors. Several studies point out emergence of free-riding behavior under independent contribution and suggest use of coordination mechanism. However, existing literature does not shed light on the conditions under which generic advertising can be detrimental (beneficial) to stronger firms weakening (strengthening) their competitive advantage. Also, under a setting including both price and brand advertising competition, coordination in generic advertising has not been unraveled. In order to deal with such issues, we consider a one-stage duopoly game in which two firms…

Prevision model and empirical test of box office results for sequels

2021

International audience; As studios release an increasing number of movie sequels, scholars have begun to examine this strategic choice. Prior studies use standard models of box office performance to evaluate sequels’ performance and have mainly compared the box office results of the original movie with those of its sequel. However, sequels hold a unique position in the motion picture market since they are strongly associated with the original movie. Using the accessibility-diagnosticity framework, this research investigates the drivers behind the success of sequels and examines specifically the original movie’s impact through the role of reviews. The results – from 232 movies (116 original …

Brand misconduct: Consequences on consumer–brand relationships

2010

Abstract This paper investigates the effects of brand misconduct on a consumer–brand relationship. Brand misconduct describes a brand's behavior that disappoints consumers' expectations of the brand, for example the alleged use of child labor in soccer ball factories contracted by Adidas , Nike and Puma . Based on relationship and congruency theory, this paper develops a model to explain consumer–brand relationship and its impact on consumers' repurchase intentions. According to this model, functional congruence, actual and ideal self-congruence, partner quality and brand relationship quality represent factors determining repurchase intention. An empirical investigation with regard to jeans…

Determinants of website traffic: the case of European fashion apparel retailers

2014

The globalization process together with the extraordinary growth in the use of Internet offer firms new growth opportunities. Retail firms are using a multichannel approach, involving the Internet, in their internationalization strategies. Website traffic as measured by unique users and online awareness is among the measures for assessing the success of the online channel. There is little evidence, however, linking website traffic and the characteristics of the retail multichannel internationalization process. In order to fill this gap, this paper analyses the factors explaining the retailer's international website traffic. Website traffic data for a sample of European fashion apparel retai…

Countering accusations with inoculation: The moderating role of consumer-company identification.

2013

Abstract Accusations of wrongdoing, baseless or justified, can severely tarnish a company's reputation. Once disseminated, even baseless accusations can persist and cause considerable damage for a company. This study examines the proactive crisis communication strategy of inoculating individuals against invalid accusations before they go viral. An experiment was conducted in a real world consumer context among members of an online consumer panel using an electronics discounter as the research stimulus. Expanding previous inoculation research on the role of value-relevant involvement for inoculation and the effectiveness of inoculation in the case of different preexisting attitudes, we find …

Cross-cultural Differences in Movie Selection. Decision-making of German, U.S., and Singaporean Media Users for Video-on-Demand Movies

2017

ABSTRACTThis article investigates the process of individual decision-making for movies on video-on-demand platforms from a cross-cultural perspective. Models of decision-making and movie selection act as theoretical underpinning. The article focuses on the information search phase and examines media consumers' information use during movie selection. Empirically the article relies on an online survey among N = 694 German, the U.S., and Singaporean students. Results indicate that participants considered only a limited amount of information before carrying out their choice. Participants shared a preference for product-related cues over crowd-related cues signaling previous user-experiences. Wi…
