Abstract Guinea pig peritoneal macrophages were cultured for 24 h in the presence of two inhibitors of the biosynthesis of collagen-like molecules such as C1q : 10 -3 M 3,4-dehydroproline or 10 -4 M 2,2′-dipyridyl. Their Fc-receptor activity was measured by rosette formation, using sheep erythrocytes (E) coated with rabbit anti-sheep IgG (EA IgG ). The Fc-receptor activity was decreased by 40 to 70% of control cultures depending on the amount of IgG on the E. The activity of a second receptor on the macrophages, mediating the binding of C3b coated E, was not altered by this treatment. Pancreatic ascites hemoglobin contributes to the systemic response in acute pancreatitis.

Upon hemolysis extracellular hemoglobin causes oxidative stress and cytotoxicity due to its peroxidase activity. Extracellular hemoglobin may release free hemin, which increases vascular permeability, leukocyte recruitment, and adhesion molecule expression. Pancreatitis-associated ascitic fluid is reddish and may contain extracellular hemoglobin. Our aim has been to determine the role of extracellular hemoglobin in the local and systemic inflammatory response during severe acute pancreatitis in rats. Immunocytochemical typification of mesothelial cells in effusions: in vivo and in vitro models.

We have performed immunocytochemical, immunoelectron microscopy, Western blot, and culture techniques using monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin, vimentin, and desmin on 17 benign and 20 malignant effusions of pleural and ascitic origin. Triple coexpression of these three antigens was observed in benign reactive mesothelial cells as well as in one case of mesothelioma. All metastatic adenocarcinoma cells were consistently negative to desmin and positive to cytokeratin and vimentin. Present results were helpful to distinguish reactive and malignant mesothelioma from metastatic carcinoma cells in effusions.

Imbalance between sympathetic and sensory innervation in peritoneal endometriosis

To investigate possible mechanisms of pain pathophysiology in patients with peritoneal endometriosis, a clinical study on sensory and sympathetic nerve fibre sprouting in endometriosis was performed. Sonographic evidence of intraperitoneal fluid. An experimental study and its clinical implications.

In order to evaluate the sensitivity of ultrasound to intraperitoneal fluid, such as ascites or blood, an experimental study was performed in the pig. Various amounts of fluid were injected into the peritoneal cavity to investigate distribution and diagnostic criteria in different positions. As little as 10 ml of fluid was visualized around the urinary bladder in an upright position. In the supine position, 20 ml could be detected around the bladder and 30 ml around the liver. Fab fragments from a monoclonal antibody against a germ tube mannoprotein block the yeast-to-mycelium transition in Candida albicans.

Fab fragments prepared from the immunoglobulin G monoclonal antibody (MAb) 4C12, which reacts with a determinant expressed on the hyphal extension of germ tubes of Candida albicans, inhibited germ tube formation, but intact MAb 4C12 did not. Indirect immunofluorescence showed a punctate binding pattern on cells incubated with Fab fragments but a confluent binding on cells incubated with intact MAb 4C12.
