Effect of chemical and biological surfactants on activated sludge of MBR system: Microscopic analysis and foam test

Abstract A bench-scale MBR unit was operated, under stressing condition, with the aim of stimulating the onset of foaming in the activated sludge. Possible synergies between synthetic surfactants in the wastewater and biological surfactants (Extra-Cellular Polymeric Substances, EPSs) were investigated by changing C/N ratio. The growth of filamentous bacteria was also discussed. The MBR unit provided satisfactory overall carbon removal overall efficiencies: in particular, synthetic surfactants were removed with efficiency higher than 90% and 95% for non-ionic and ionic surfactants, respectively. International audience; Membrane FasL is the natural trigger of Fas-mediated apoptosis. A soluble homotrimeric counterpart (sFasL) also exists which is very weakly active, and needs oligomerization beyond its trimeric state to induce apoptosis. We recently generated a soluble FasL chimera by fusing the immunoglobulin-like domain of the leukemia inhibitory factor receptor gp190 to the extracellular region of human FasL, which enabled spontaneous dodecameric homotypic polymerization of FasL. Polymers of Limonene Oxide and Carbon Dioxide: Polycarbonates of the Solar Economy

Limonene epoxide (1,2 limonene oxide) readily reacts with carbon dioxide in a ring opening copolymerization reaction with insertion of CO2 and formation of polycarbonates of exceptional chemical and physical properties. Both poly(limonene carbonate) and poly(limonene dicarbonate) can be synthesized using low cost Zn or Al homogeneous catalysts. This study addresses selected relevant questions concerning the technical and economic feasibility of limonene and carbon dioxide polymers en route to the bioeconomy.
Heat-Resistant Fully Bio-Based Nanocomposite Blends Based on Poly(lactic acid)

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is melt mixed with polyamide 11 (PA11) to obtain a heat-resistant fully bio-based blend with PLA as the dominant component. The goal is achieved by adding small amounts of organoclay (OMMT), which is used to manipulate the blend microstructure. The selective positioning of the OMMT inside the PA11 and at the PLA/PA11 interface turns the blend morphology from drop/matrix into co-continuous at high PLA content (70 wt%). The OMMT-rich PA11 framework that interpenetrates the major PLA phase effectively contributes to bear stresses, and the nanocomposite blend keeps its structural integrity up to ≈160 °C, i.e., about 100 °C above the PLA glass transition.

Quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS) studies are reported, which address the early stages of aggregation of the polypentamer poly(VPGVG). This reflects the major primary structural feature of native elastin. The study is focused on the region of the phase diagram which in both its temperature and concentration range is closest to the state of affairs occurring in the course of bioelastogenesis by progressive synthesis of the precursor protein. Abstract The formulation of a novel delivery system for ellagic acid formulated via layer-by-layer (L-b-L) electrostatic deposition of biopolymers onto soybean lecithin liposomes was achieved. Optimization of parameters affecting the formulation of biopolymer-coated liposomes was carried out by monitoring changes on its size, surface charge and morphology. Ellagic acid was loaded into the liposome core and loading properties were analyzed. Xyloglucan is a natural polysaccharide having a cellulose-like backbone and hydroxyl groups-rich side-chains. In its native form the polymer is water-soluble and forms gel only in presence of selected co-solutes. When a given fraction of galactosyl residues are removed by enzymatic reaction, the polymer acquires the ability to form a gel in aqueous solution at physiological temperatures, a property of great interest for biomedical/pharmaceutical applications. Temporal control of xyloglucan self-assembly into layered structures by radiation-induced degradation

Partially degalactosylated xyloglucan from tamarind seeds (Deg-XG) is a very appealing biopolymer for the production of in situ gelling systems at physiological temperature. In this work, we observe that the morphology of hydrogels evolves towards high degrees of structural organization with time, yielding to dense stacks of thin membranes within 24 h of incubation at 37 °C.
