The Modern Strategies in the Cyber Warfare
2018
As there is no generally accepted definition for cyber warfare, it is a term that is quite liberally used in describing events and actions in the digital cyber world. The concept of cyber warfare became extremely popular from 2008 to 2010, partly superseding the previously used concept of information warfare which was launched in the 1990s. For some, cyber warfare is war that is conducted in the virtual domain. For others, it is a counterpart to conventional “kinetic” warfare. According to the OECD’s 2001 report, cyberwar military doctrines resemble those of so-called conventional war: retaliation and deterrence. Researchers agree with the notion that the definition of cyberwar should addre…
Knowing is half the battle: Seasonal forecasts, adaptive cropping systems, and the mediating role of private markets in Zambia
2019
Abstract This paper examines how smallholders living in regions where a drought is forecasted adapt their farm practices in response to receiving seasonal forecast information. The article draws on a unique longitudinal dataset in Zambia, which collected information from farm households before and after a significant drought caused by the 2015/2016 El-Nino Southern Oscillation. It finds that farmers residing in areas forecasted to be drought-affected and receiving seasonal forecast information are significantly more likely to integrate drought tolerant crops into their cropping systems compared to similar households not receiving this information. Moreover, the probability that a farmer imp…

Warfare dendrochronology: Trees witness the deployment of the German battleship Tirpitz in Norway
2019
Abstract War has an immediate and obvious effect on people and communities, but its impacts on local ecology can be more subtle. This paper shows how one military encounter in the Second World War has left a clear legacy in the northern forests of Norway, trackable more than seventy years later. We used annual growth rings of ∼180 pine and ∼30 birch trees as witnesses of the deployment of the German battleship Tirpitz at the Kafjord. The Tirpitz was the target of several Allied air attacks, but the Kriegsmarine (German navy from 1935 to 1945) used artificial smoke, consisting of chlorosulfonic acid and zinc/hexachloroethane, to hide the ship. These smoke-screen actions throughout 1944 cause…
Campaign issues in political strategies and press coverage: The rental law conflict in the 1982–1983 election campaign in the federal republic of Ger…
1989
Abstract Election campaigns are institutionalized conflicts which are carried out in and through the mass media. Success and defeat in these conflicts depend upon the communication strategies of the parties and on the reactions of the journalists. In the election campaign of 1982–1983, the campaign manager of the Christian Democrats succeeded in altering the conflict over the new rental law into a conflict over the credibility of the SPD‐opposition. Thus, he created a counterpart to the criticism directed against the federal government. The newspapers and weekly news magazines did not take sides in the conflict through explicit evaluations, but rather by emphasizing or neglecting issues in …
2022
The very short report of the battle of Himera given by Herodotus’ Histories seems to have the primary aim of supporting a widespread tradition among the inhabitants of Sicily (still circulating at the time when the historian lived) about the true reason preventing Gelon from siding with the Hellenic League against Persians: he was impelled to engage in the battle of Himera, which took place the very same day as the sea battle of Salamis. No celebratory intent emerges from the account of Gelon’s and Theron’s victory over the Carthaginians, since Herodotus wants to report all the versions known to him about the explanations given to Gelon’s refusal to join the Hellenic League; there is no roo…
The Military Policy of Isaac Komnenos at the time of battle of Petroe (1057)
2018
AbstractIsaac Komnenos (1007-1060) was the son of Manuel Eroticos Komnenos (955/960-c.1020), one of the associates of Basil II. Thanks to his education, Isaac later joined the imperial army (around 1042). He held the post of stratopedarches of the East and the ranks of magistros. At Easter 1057, the delegation of many military commanders presented itself before the emperor. This delegation was led by Isaac, and along with Katakalon Kekaumenos he tried to convince Michael VI to give them both the title of proedros, but the new emperor rejected their demands. They did not receive the money they counted on the part of the emperor, and he insulted them. This, in turn, became the causative facto…
