Polyphenol intake and mortality risk: a re-analysis of the PREDIMED trial
2014
[Background] Polyphenols may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other chronic diseases due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as their beneficial effects on blood pressure, lipids and insulin resistance. However, no previous epidemiological studies have evaluated the relationship between the intake of total polyphenols intake and polyphenol subclasses with overall mortality. Our aim was to evaluate whether polyphenol intake is associated with all-cause mortality in subjects at high cardiovascular risk.
Iris-Like Tunable Aperture Employing Liquid-Crystal Elastomers
2014
A liquid-crystal elastomer (LCE) iris inspired by the human eye is demonstrated. With integrated polyimide-based platinum heaters, the LCE material is thermally actuated. The radial contraction direction, similar to a mammalian iris, is imprinted to the LCE by a custom-designed magnetic field. Actuation of the device is reproducible over multiple cycles and controllable at intermediate contraction states.
Rapid and improved gas-liquid chromatography technique for detection of hippurate hydrolysis by Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli
1987
A gas-liquid chromatographic method which requires no chloroform extraction of the split products has been investigated for the detection of hippurate hydrolysis by Campylobacter spp. This technique gave better reproducibility than other tests also used in this study and allows the routine use of the gas-liquid chromatographic method for identification of Campylobacter isolates.
Aminobisphenolate supported tungsten disulphido and dithiolene complexes
2015
Dioxotungsten(vi) complexes with tetradentate amino bisphenolates were converted into the corresponding Cs-symmetric amino bisphenolate disulphido complexes by a reaction with either Lawesson's reagent or P2S5. Further reaction with diethyl acetylenedicarboxylate leads to the formation of diamagnetic tungsten(iv) dithiolene compounds. The syntheses, crystal structures, spectroscopic and electrochemical characterization of such disulphido and dithiolene complexes are presented.
Triphenyltin(IV) 2-[(E)-2-(aryl)-1-diazenyl]benzoates as anticancer drugs: Synthesis, structural characterization, in vitro cytotoxicity and study of…
2009
Summary: Triphenyltin(IV) complexes of composition [Ph3SnL 1H]n (1) and [Ph3SnL2H]n (2) (where L1H=2-[(E)-2-(3-formyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-diazenyl] benzoate and L2H = 2-[(E)-2-(4-Hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)-1-diazenyl] benzoate) were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic (1H, 13C and 119Sn NMR, IR, 119Sn Mössbauer) techniques in combination with elemental analysis. The molecular structures and geometries of the complexes (1 and 2) were fully optimized using the quantum mechanical method (PM3). Complexes (1 and 2) were found to exhibit stronger cytotoxic activity in vitro across a panel of human tumour cell lines viz., A498, EVSA-T, H226, IGROV, M19 MEL, MCF-7 and WIDR. The test compound…
Molecular basis of the interaction of novel tributyltin(IV) 2/4-[(E)-2-(aryl)-1-diazenyl] benzoates endowed with an improved cytotoxic profile: Synth…
2010
A series of tributyltin(IV) complexes based on 2/4-[(E)-2-(aryl)-1-diazenyl]benzoate ligands was synthesized, wherein the position of the carboxylate and aryl substituents (methyl, tert-butyl and hydroxyl) varies. The complexes, Bu(3)SnL(1-4)H (1-4), have been structurally characterized by elemental analysis and IR, NMR ((1)H, (13)C, and (119)Sn) and (119)Sn Mossbauer spectroscopy. All have a tetrahedral geometry in solution and a trigonal bipyramidal geometry in the solid-state, except for Bu(3)SnL(4)H (4) that was ascertained to have tetrahedral coordination by X-ray crystallography. Cytotoxicity studies were carried out on human tumor cell lines A498 (renal cancer), EVSA-T (mammary cance…
Sortase A Inhibitors: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives
2015
Here, we describe the most promising small synthetic organic compounds that act as potent Sortase A inhibitors and cater the potential to be developed as antivirulence drugs. Sortase A is a polypeptide of 206 amino acids, which catalyzes two sequential reactions: (i) thioesterification and (ii) transpeptidation. Sortase A is involved in the process of bacterial adhesion by anchoring LPXTG-containing proteins to lipid II. Sortase A inhibitors do not affect bacterial growth, but they restrain the virulence of pathogenic bacterial strains, thereby preventing infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus or other Gram-positive bacteria. The efficacy of the most promising inhibitors needs to be com…
Dibutyltin(IV) complexes containing arylazobenzoate ligands: chemistry, in vitro cytotoxic effects on human tumor cell lines and mode of interaction …
2009
Dibutyltin(IV) complexes of composition Bu2Sn (LH)2, where LH is a carboxylate residue derived from 2-[(E)- (5-tert-butyl-2- hydroxyphenyl)diazenyl]benzoate (L1H) with water molecule (1), 4-[(E)-(5-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl) diazenyl]benzoate (L2H) (2) and 4-[(E)-(4-hydroxy-5- methylphenyl)diazenyl]benzoate (L3H) (3), were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic (1H, 13C and 119Sn NMR, IR, 119Sn Mössbauer) techniques. A full characterization was accomplished from the crystal structure of complex 1. The molecular structures and geometries of the complexes (1a i.e. 1 without water molecule and 3) were fully optimized using the quantum mechanical method (PM6). Complexes 1 and 3 were fo…
An in vitro comparative assessment with a series of new triphenyltin(IV) 2-/4-[(E)-2-(aryl)-1-diazenyl]benzoates endowed with anticancer activities: …
2012
Four new triphenyltin(IV) complexes of composition Ph 3SnLH (where LH = 2-/4-[(E)-2-(aryl)-1-diazenyl]benzoate) (1-4) were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic ( 1H, 13C and 119Sn NMR, IR, 119Sn Mössbauer) techniques in combination with elemental analysis. The 119Sn NMR spectroscopic data indicate a tetrahedral coordination geometry in non-coordinating solvents. The crystal structures of three complexes, Ph 3SnL 1H (1), Ph 3SnL 3H (3), Ph 3SnL 4H (4), were determined. All display an essentially tetrahedral geometry with angles ranging from 93.50(8) to 124.5(2)°; 119Sn Mössbauer spectral data support this assignment. The cytotoxicity studies were performed with complexes 1-4, along…
Competitive interaction of three peroxidizing herbicides with the binding of 3H acifluorfen to corn etioplast membranes
1990
AbstractThe specific binding of the herbicide acifluorfen 5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid to corn etioplast membranes is competitively inhibited by protoporphyrinogen IX, the substrate of protoporphyrinogen oxidase. Three other peroxidizing molecules, oxadiazon [5-ter-butyl-3-(2,4-dichloro-5-isopropoxyphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-one], LS 82556 [(S)3-N-(methylbenzyl)carbamoyl-5-propionyl-2,6-lutidine], and M&B 39279 [5-amino-4-cyano-1-(2,6-dichloro-4-trifluoromethylphenyl)pyrazol], also compete with acifluorfen for its binding site. The four herbicides thus bind to the same site, or to closely located sites, on the enzyme protoporphyrinogen oxidase.
