Dynamics of Metal Centers Monitored by Nuclear Inelastic Scattering
2005
Nuclear inelastic scattering of synchrotron radiation has been used now since 10 years as a tool for vibrational spectroscopy. This method has turned out especially useful in case of large molecules that contain a M\"ossbauer active metal center. Recent applications to iron-sulfur proteins, to iron(II) spin crossover complexes and to tin-DNA complexes are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the combination of nuclear inelastic scattering and density functional calculations.
N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalyzed Quadruple Domino Reactions through α,β-Unsaturated Acyl Azolium Intermediates : Asymmetric Synthesis of Cyclopenta[c…
2018
An N‐heterocyclic carbene catalyzed domino sequence via α,β‐unsaturated acyl azolium intermediates has been developed. This strategy provides a convenient enantioselective route to functionalized tricyclic coumarin derivatives and cyclopentanes. DFT studies and control experiments were performed to gain better insight into the reaction mechanism. peerReviewed
Optimizing the SYBR green related cyanine dye structure to aim for brighter nucleic acid visualization
2022
In recent years, the studies of RNA and its use for the development of RNA based vaccines have increased drastically. Although cyanine dyes are commonly used probes for studying nucleic acids, in a wide range of applications, there is still a growing need for better and brighter dyes. To meet this demand, we have systematically studied the structure of SYBR green-related cyanine dyes to gain a deeper understanding of their interactions with biomolecules especially how they interact with nucleic acids and the structural components which makes them strongly fluorescent. Herein, five new dyes were synthesized, and their photophysical properties were evaluated. Observations of photophysical cha…
Identification of mixed bromidochloridotellurate anions in disordered crystal structures of (bdmim)2[TeX2Y4] (X, Y = Br, Cl; bdmim = 1-butyl-2,3-dime…
2014
The discrete mixed [TeBrxCl6−x]2− anions in their disordered crystal structures have been identified by using the phases prepared by the reaction of 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium halogenides (bdmim)X with tellurium tetrahalogenides TeX4 (X = Cl, Br) as examples. Homoleptic (bdmim)2[TeX6] [X = Cl (1), Br (2)] and mixed (bdmim)2[TeBr2Cl4] (3), and (bdmim)2[TeBr4Cl2] (4) are formed depending on the choice of the reagents, and their crystal structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The coordination environments of tellurium in all hexahalogenidotellurates are almost octahedral. Because of the crystallographic disorder, the mixed [TeBr2Cl4]2− and [TeBr4Cl2]2− anions …
Direct detection of 17O NMR in [Gd(DOTA)]- by NMR Spectroscopy
2015
The 17O NMR spectrum of the non-coordinated carboxyl oxygen in the GdIII-DOTA (DOTA = tetraazacyclododecanetetraacetic acid) complex has been observed experimentally. Its line width is essentially unaffected by paramagnetic relaxation due to gadolinium, and is only affected by the quadrupole pathway. The results are supported by the relevant parameters (hyperfine and quadrupole coupling constants) calculated by relativistic DFT methods. This finding opens up new avenues for investigating the structure and reactivity of paramagnetic GdIII complexes used as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging.
Prenatal Risk Calculation (PRC) 3.0: An Extended DoE-Based First-Trimester Screening Algorithm Allowing For Early Blood Sampling
2015
Aim: Both previous versions of the German PRC algorithm developed by our group for routine first-trimester screening relied on the assumption that maternal blood sampling and fetal ultrasonography are performed at the same visit of a pregnant women. In this paper we present an extension of our method allowing also for constellations where this synchronization is abandoned through preponing blood sampling to dates before 11 weeks of gestation. Methods: In contrast to the directly measured concentrations of the serum parameters PAPP-A and free ß-hCG, the logarithmically transformed values could be shown to admit the construction of reference bands covering the whole range from 16 to 84 mm CRL…
Does Multi-Component Strategy Training Improve Calculation Fluency Among Poor Performing Elementary School Children?
2018
The aim of the present study was to extend the previous intervention research in math by examining whether elementary school children with poor calculation fluency benefit from strategy training focusing on derived fact strategies and following an integrative framework, i.e., integrating factual, conceptual, and procedural arithmetic knowledge. It was also examined what kind of changes can be found in frequency of using different strategies. A quasi-experimental design was applied, and the study was carried out within the context of the school and its schedules and resources. Twenty schools in Finland volunteered to participate, and 1376 children were screened in for calculation fluency pro…
When the Grafting of Double Decker Phthalocyanines on Si(100)-2 × 1 Partly Affects the Molecular Electronic Structure
2016
International audience; A combined X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and density functional theory (DFT) study has been performed to characterize the adsorbate interaction of lutetium biphthalocyanine (LuPc2) molecules on the Si(100)-2 × 1 surface. Large molecule–substrate adsorption energies are computed and are found to compete with the molecule–molecule interactions of the double decker molecules. A particularly good matching between STM images and computed ones confirms the deformation of the molecule upon the absorption process. The comparison between DFT calculations and XP spectra reveals that the electronic distribution in the two plateaus …
Experimental and Computational Study of Unique Tetranuclear µ3-Chloride and µ-Phenoxo/Chloro-Bridged Defective Dicubane Cobalt(II) Clusters
2016
Two tetranuclear CoII clusters [Co4(L)2(µ3-Cl)2Cl2] have been prepared by using multidentate diaminobisphenolate ligands. The solid-state structures of the complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The cores of the cluster compounds can be defined as a two-vertex-deficient dicubane geometry (pseudo-dicubane). In the central unit, the cobalt(II) cations are linked through phenoxide oxygen (outer bridges) and chloride anions (inner bridges), previously unprecedented in this type of cobalt cluster. The magnetic properties were studied by both experimental and computational methods. By using a combination of techniques, we were able to determine the nature and strength of t…
Determining postoperative anterior chamber depth
2003
Abstract Purpose: To compare measured and calculated postoperative anterior chamber depths (ACDs). Setting: Department of Ophthalmology and Institute of Medical Physics, University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria, and Department of Ophthalmology, University of Mainz, Mainz, Germany. Methods: The postoperative ACD was measured in 189 pseudophakic eyes using a laboratory prototype of partial coherence interferometry (PCI). In 6 intraocular lens (IOL) groups, the mean ACD was calculated by ray tracing based on the best-known A-constants of the SRK formulas. In addition, for each IOL type, each measured ACD was compared with a value calculated using the individual spherical equivalent of the postope…
