The luminescence of ZnO ceramics

2010

Abstract The luminescence properties of ZnO ceramics with grains 100–5000 nm sintered by different techniques from nanopowders were studied. The luminescence decay times were compared with that obtained for ZnO single crystal. The temperature dependence of non-exponential decay of defect luminescence (2.0–2.6 eV) was measured in wide time, intensity and temperature range. The luminescence decay kinetic at T ≤ 20 K shows the decay close to I(t) ∼ t−1 dependence. At temperature region 50–250 K the decay kinetics is more complicate since the TSL was observed in this temperature region. It is shown that the luminescence properties of NP and ceramics strongly depend on defect distribution on gra…

centers induced by γ irradiation in sol–gel synthesized oxygen deficient amorphous silicon dioxide

2007

The effects of room temperature γ-ray irradiation up to a dose of ∼1300 kGy are investigated by Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements in amorphous silicon dioxide (a-SiO2) produced by a sol-gel synthesis method that introduces O{triple bond, long}Si{single bond}Si{triple bond, long}O oxygen deficiency. We have found that exposure to radiation generates the Eγ′ center with the same spectral features found in high purity commercial a-SiO2. The maximum concentration of defects induced in this sol-gel material indicates that its resistance to radiation is comparable to that of synthetic fused a-SiO2. The concentration of Eγ′ center increases with irradiation, featuring a sublinear …

Archaeometric study of ceramic figurines from the Maya settlement of La Blanca (Petén, Guatemala)

2014

Abstract In this article, analytical results will be presented and discussed regarding a selected set of figurines from the ancient Maya settlement of La Blanca in Peten, Guatemala. The objective is to characterize the ceramic material by two analytical complementary techniques: X-ray diffraction (XRD) and total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF). The data obtained by means of both XRD and TXRF were compared and analyzed by multivariate statistical techniques in order to obtain sample groups according to their chemical composition. The results of this archaeometric study have been compared to those that have been obtained through macroscopic characterization by means of the traditional cl…

The importance of bioceramics and computed tomography in the late clinical management of a horizontal root fracture : a case report

2020

Root fractures resulting from dental trauma involve dentin, cementum and pulp. The present study aimed to demonstrate the importance of cone-beam computed tomography (CBTC) and bioceramics in the correct planning and intervention of a horizontal root fracture case in tooth 11 with late treatment in an 18-year-old patient. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed tooth displacement, pain on vertical percussion and images suggestive of a horizontal root fracture. Pulp necrosis was diagnosed and CBTC was requested for treatment planning. Subsequently, endodontic treatment was performed using a bioceramic apical plug. A 2-year follow-up indicated the absence of root resorption and normal…

Inter/intramolecular Cherenkov radiation energy transfer (CRET) from a fluorophore with a built-in radionuclide.

2014

The Cherenkov radiation (CR) from [(18)F]-FDG, [(177)Lu]-LuCl3 and [(90)Y]-YCl3 was detected and CR energy transfer (CRET) to several fluorophores was examined. Subsequent fluorescence emission was found to be a function of the position of absorption bands with respect to the CR peak, energy of emitted particles, radionuclide/fluorophore loading, and fluorophore brightness. A variant of the best fluorophore with a built-in radionuclide was synthesized to achieve inter- and intra-molecular CRET.

Inelastic neutron and low-frequency Raman scattering in a niobium-phosphate glass for Raman gain applications

2011

Abstract We present measurements of the vibrational spectrum of a binary niobium-phosphate glass in the THz frequency range using inelastic neutron and Raman scattering. The spectra of these glasses show a low-frequency enhancement of the vibrational density of states (“boson peak”). Using a recently developed theory of vibrational excitations in disordered solids we are able to reconcile the measured neutron and Raman spectra using fluctuating elastic and Pockels constants as a model concept. As the spontaneous Raman susceptibility is a key parameter for Raman amplification our results suggest a significant gain profile for application of niobium-phosphate glasses in Raman amplifiers.

Variability of the Si-O-Si angle in amorphous-SiO2 probed by electron paramagnetic resonance and Raman spectroscopy

2009

We report an experimental investigation by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Raman spectroscopy on a variety of amorphous silicon dioxide materials. Our study by EPR have permitted us to point out that the splitting of the primary hyperfine doublet of the Eγ′ center shows a relevant sample-to-sample variability, changing from ∼41.8 to ∼42.6 mT in the set of materials we considered. The parallel study by Raman spectroscopy has enabled us to state that this variability is attributable to the different Si-O-Si angle characterizing the matrices of the different materials. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. Absorption band at 7.6 eV induced by γ-irradiation in silica glasses

2001

Optical absorption of defects induced by γ-irradiation in both natural and synthetic silica is experimentally investigated in the vacuum-ultraviolet (UV) range. Our results show that γ-rays, in a dose range of 1000 Mrad, induce an absorption band centered at 7.6 eV, the so-called E band, whose growth kinetics is not related to γ-activated precursors but to defects of the glassy matrix directly induced via the breaking of Si–O bonds occurring under γ-irradiation. Moreover, we observe that γ-rays do not bleach the E band present in some silica samples before irradiation, so ruling out that the associated defects can be precursors of the paramagnetic E′ centers, also induced by γ-irradiation.

Molecular dynamics studies of 3D quasicrystals

1993

Abstract The thermodynamic behaviour of monatomic and diatomic models of three-dimensional icosahedral quasicrystals has been studied in NVT and NPT ensembles using molecular dynamics simulations with atoms interacting via Lennard-Jones potentials. We also report on a microcanonical MD simulation of decagonal Al 65 Cu 20 Co 15 quasicrystals where an experimentally determined binary model has been used. To obtain stability in this latter case it is necessary to endow the atoms with effective pair potentials. No transitions to crystalline or amorphous phases were found for diatomic models. Monatomic models, however, display a certain stability only in the low-temperature region. In the range …

The correlation of the 7.6 eV optical absorption band in pure fused silicon dioxide with twofold-coordinated silicon

1992

Abstract The optical absorption band at 7.6 eV, which appears in oxygen deficient pure silica, does not correlate with any ESR signal in non-irradiated samples. Longlasting illumination at 80 K in the range of its absorption leads to an increase of the absorption band at 5 eV. Subsequent heating to 290 K restores the initial absorption. These data can be explained as photodissociation and thermal recreation of a complex defect containing a twofold-coordinated silicon defect. This complex defect is responsible for the 7.6 eV absorption band.
