Towards Vorst's conjecture in positive characteristic

2018

Vorst's conjecture relates the regularity of a ring with the $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy invariance of its $K$-theory. We show a variant of this conjecture in positive characteristic.

Exponential Codimension Growth of PI Algebras: An Exact Estimate

1999

Abstract LetAbe an associative PI-algebra over a fieldFof characteristic zero. By studying the exponential behavior of the sequence of codimensions {cn(A)} ofA, we prove thatInv(A)=limn→∞  c n ( A ) always exists and is an integer. We also give an explicit way for computing such integer: letBbe a finite dimensionalZ2-graded algebra whose Grassmann envelopeG(B) satisfies the same identities ofA; thenInv(A)=Inv(G(B))=dim C(0)+dim C(1)whereC(0)+C(1)is a suitableZ2-graded semisimple subalgebra ofB.

Topological lower bounds on the distance between area preserving diffeomorphisms

2000

Area preserving diffeomorphisms of the 2-disk which are Identity near the boundary form a group which can be equipped, using theL2-norm on its Lie algebra, with a right invariant metric. In this paper we give a lower bound on the distance between diffeomorphisms which is invariant under area preserving changes of coordinates and which improves the lower bound induced by the Calabi invariant. In the case of renormalizable and infinitely renormalizable maps, our estimate can be improved and computed.

Summing multi-norms defined by Orlicz spaces and symmetric sequence space

2016

We develop the notion of the \((X_1,X_2)\)-summing power-norm based on a~Banach space \(E\), where \(X_1\) and \(X_2\) are symmetric sequence spaces. We study the particular case when \(X_1\) and \(X_2\) are Orlicz spaces \(\ell_\Phi\) and \(\ell_\Psi\) respectively and analyze under which conditions the \((\Phi, \Psi)\)-summing power-norm becomes a~multinorm. In the case when \(E\) is also a~symmetric sequence space \(L\), we compute the precise value of \(\|(\delta_1,\cdots,\delta_n)\|_n^{(X_1,X_2)}\) where \((\delta_k)\) stands for the canonical basis of \(L\), extending known results for the \((p,q)\)-summing power-norm based on the space \(\ell_r\) which corresponds to \(X_1=\ell_p\), …

Browder's theorems through localized SVEP

2005

A bounded linear operator T ∈ L(X) on aBanach space X is said to satisfy “Browder’s theorem” if the Browder spectrum coincides with the Weyl spectrum. T ∈ L(X) is said to satisfy “a-Browder’s theorem” if the upper semi-Browder spectrum coincides with the approximate point Weyl spectrum. In this note we give several characterizations of operators satisfying these theorems. Most of these characterizations are obtained by using a localized version of the single-valued extension property of T. In the last part we shall give some characterizations of operators for which “Weyl’s theorem” holds.

Cotype 2 estimates for spaces of polynomials on sequence spaces

2002

We give asymptotically correct estimations for the cotype 2 constant C2(P(mXn)) ofthe spaceP(mXn) of allm-homogenous polynomials onXn, the span of the firstn sequencesek=(\gdkj)j in a Banach sequence spaceX. Applications to Minkowski, Orlicz and Lorentz sequence spaces are given.

The solution to a conjecture of Tits on the subgroup generated by the squares of the generators of an Artin group

2000

It was conjectured by Tits that the only relations amongst the squares of the standard generators of an Artin group are the obvious ones, namely that a^2 and b^2 commute if ab=ba appears as one of the Artin relations. In this paper we prove Tits' conjecture for all Artin groups. More generally, we show that, given a number m(s)>1 for each Artin generator s, the only relations amongst the powers s^m(s) of the generators are that a^m(a) and b^m(b) commute if ab=ba appears amongst the Artin relations.

The conjugacy problem in subgroups of right-angled Artin groups

2009

We prove that the conjugacy problem in right-angled Artin groups (RAAGs), as well as in a large and natural class of subgroups of RAAGs, can be solved in linear-time. This class of subgroups contains, for instance, all graph braid groups (i.e. fundamental groups of configuration spaces of points in graphs), many hyperbolic groups, and it coincides with the class of fundamental groups of ``special cube complexes'' studied independently by Haglund and Wise.
