Superparamagnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with tailored functionality for protein separation

2007

Polymer coated superparamagnetic gamma-Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticles were derivatized with a synthetic double-stranded RNA [poly(IC)], a known allosteric activator of the latent (2-5)A synthetase, to separate a single 35 kDa protein from a crude extract which cross reacted with antibodies raised against the sponge enzyme.

The mechanism of aquaporin inhibition by gold compounds elucidated by biophysical and computational methods

2017

The inhibition of water and glycerol permeation via human aquaglyceroporin-3 (AQP3) by gold(iii) complexes has been studied by stopped-flow spectroscopy and, for the first time, its mechanism has been described using molecular dynamics (MD), combined with density functional theory (DFT) and electrochemical studies. The obtained MD results showed that the most effective gold-based inhibitor, anchored to Cys40 in AQP3, is able to induce shrinkage of pores preventing glycerol and water permeation. Moreover, the good correlation between the affinity of the Au(iii) complex to Cys binding and AQP3 inhibition effects was highlighted, while no influence of the different oxidative character of the c…

Thermal and hydrothermal ageing of bio-based composite/metal hybrid materials. Application to the development of ultra-light and durable street furni…

2021

In the perspectives of the future city, the progressive use of autonomous vehicles seems to become unavoidable. The preparation of an adequate framework for the deployment of this future mobility represents an important issue. This requires revisiting the urban infrastructures of cities from the choice of material to the design, and to propose solutions based on mobile street furniture. Faced with this challenge, hybrid materials such fibre metal laminates (FML) present interesting characteristics. FML made of plant fibre composites are of particular interest to minimize their environmental impact. Thus, the objective of this thesis is to design and manufacture plant-fibre metal laminates a…

Reshaping End-of-Life components by sheet hydroforming: An experimental and numerical analysis

2022

In this study, a numerical/experimental analysis is proposed to investigate the possibility of reshaping sheet metal-based End-of-Life (EoL) components using sheet Hydroforming (SHF). Returned EoL components are challenging to be reformed, they are usually characterised by high heterogeneity as there are localised thinning areas (caused by the original forming processes), and the overall formability is reduced with respect to the original flat sheet material. The reshaping route was replicated: a deep drawing process was adopted to impart a square feature; subsequently, SHF was performed. The capability of remove the deep drawn feature was analysed with varying Blank-holder force, oil press…

Solubilized liver extracellular matrix maintains primary rat hepatocyte phenotype in-vitro.

2015

Whole organ engineering and cell-based regenerative medicine approaches are being investigated as potential therapeutic options for end-stage liver failure. However, a major challenge of these strategies is the loss of hepatic specific function after hepatocytes are removed from their native microenvironment. The objective of the present study was to determine if solubilized liver extracellular matrix (ECM), when used as a media supplement, can better maintain hepatocyte phenotype compared to type I collagen alone or solubilized ECM harvested from a non-liver tissue source. Liver extracellular matrix (LECM) from four different species was isolated via liver tissue decellularization, solubil…

Cooperative Thermal and Optical Switching of Spin States in a New Two-Dimensional Coordination Polymer

2003

{Fe(pmd)2[Cu(CN)2]2} (pmd = pyrimidine) displays a rigid two-dimensional structure and undergoes thermal- and optical-driven spin crossover behaviour; cooperative elastic coupling between iron(II) ions in the framework induces thermal hysteresis in the HS↔LS conversion and sigmoidal HS→LS relaxation of the photo-induced HS state at low temperatures. Benchmarking of strength models for unidirectional composites under longitudinal tension

2018

© 2018 Elsevier Ltd Several modelling approaches are available in the literature to predict longitudinal tensile failure of fibre-reinforced polymers. However, a systematic, blind and unbiased comparison between the predictions from the different models and against experimental data has never been performed. This paper presents a benchmarking exercise performed for three different models from the literature: (i) an analytical hierarchical scaling law for composite fibre bundles, (ii) direct numerical simulations of composite fibre bundles, and (iii) a multiscale finite-element simulation method. The results show that there are significant discrepancies between the predictions of the differe…

Impact of Si on the high-temperature oxidation of AlCr(Si)N coatings

2022

The resistance of wear protective coatings against oxidation is crucial for their use at high temperatures. Here, three nanocomposite AlCr(Si)N coatings with a fixed Al/Cr atomic ratio of 70/30 and a varying Si-content of 0 at.%, 2.5 at.% and 5 at.% were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray in order to understand the oxidation behavior depending on their Si-content. Additionally, a partially oxidized AlCrSiN coating with 5 at.% Si on a sapphire substrate was studied across the coating thickness by depth-resolved cross-sectional X-ray nanodiffraction and scanning trans-mission electron microscopy to investigate the elemental composition, morphol…

Biphasic dimerisation of methylacrylate--immobilisation and stabilisation of cationic Pd-catalysts in ionic liquids by an ammoniumphosphine ligand.

2002

The first continuous, biphasic, Pd-catalysed dimerisation of methylacrylate is described. The biphasic system has been realised by using a tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid as catalyst medium and an ammoniumphosphine ligand to immobilise and stabilise the Pd-catalyst.

Synthesis and Characterization of Iron-Doped ZrSiO4 Solid Solutions from Gels

2011

The mechanism of formation and the structural features of tetragonal Fe–ZrO2-amorphous silica composites and particulated Fe-doped ZrSiO4 solid solutions were studied. A series of specimens with compositions Fex–ZrSiO4, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10 were prepared by sol–gel techniques and thermally annealed over the range of temperature between 400°C and 1600°C. Results confirmed the formation of tetragonal Fe–ZrO2 solid solution as first crystalline phase on the whole process leading to Fe-doped ZrSiO4 solid solution. The annealing temperature for the preparation of Fe-containing ZrSiO4 solid solutions was dependent on the nominal amount of iron. The Fex–ZrSiO4 solid solutions, with 0.02 < x < 0.08, were a…
