Changes of ICE protease activities caused by toxic supernatants of dinoflagellates (Prorocentrum species) from marine algal blooms

1999

Summary Marine phytotoxins may become a major health problem for humans because of their ability to contaminate seafood and to cause shellfish poisoning. In this report, the cytotoxic effects and the effects on intracellular caspase activities of culture supernatants from different dinoflagellate Prorocentrum clones were determined. Among the clones tested, P. tepsium BAH ME-140 and P. lima BAH ME-130 K1 and K2 clones but not P. minimum and P. micans were found to be toxic on rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells, mouse lymphoma L5178Y cells and rat primary neurons. A significant increase in the specific activities of caspase 1 (ICE), caspase 3 (CPP32) and caspase 6 (Mch2) to 149–167% was observe…

Cubane-Type Mo3CoS4 Molecular Clusters with Three Different Metal Electron Populations: Structure, Reactivity and Their Use in the Synthesis of Hybri…

2004

Heterodimetallic cubane-type complexes coordinated to diphosphanes [Mo(3)CoS(4)(dmpe)(3)Cl(4)](+) ([1](+)) (dmpe=1,2-bis(dimethylphosphanyl)ethane), [Mo(3)CoS(4)(dmpe)(3)Cl(4)] (1) and [Mo(3)CoS(4)(dmpe)(3)Cl(3)(CO)] (2) with 14, 15 and 16 metal electrons, respectively, have been prepared from the [Mo(3)S(4)(dmpe)(3)Cl(3)](+) trinuclear precursor using [Co(2)(CO)(8)] or CoCl(2) as cobalt source. Cluster complexes [1](+) and 1 are easily interconverted chemically and electrochemically. The Co-Cl distance increases upon electron addition and substitution of the chlorine atom coordinated to cobalt with CO only takes place in presence of a reducing agent to give complex 2. Structural changes in…

Uptake of Acetylcholine by Bean Hypocotyl Hooks

1978

Summary The uptake of acetylcholine by etiolated hypocotyl hooks of beans ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is influenced by light and the pH-value of the incubation medium. Acetylcholine is hydrolysed up to 90 % during the uptake. The hydrolysis is inhibited by pH-value lower than 6.0 and by eserine, an inhibitor of the acetylcholinesterase. The high amount of hydrolysis is a serious problem in experiments involving acetylcholine and necessitates the inclusions of adequate controls without which direct effects of acetylcholine cannot be distinguished from reactions of its metabolic products.

Induction of (2′−5′)oligoadenylate synthetase in the marine spongesSuberites domunculaandGeodia cydoniumby the bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide

2002

Recent studies have shown that the Porifera, with the examples of the demosponges Suberites domuncula and Geodia cydonium, comprise a series of pathways found also in the immune system of Deuterostomia, such as vertebrates, but are absent in Protostomia, with insects or nematodes as examples. One pathway is the (2'-5')oligoadenylate synthetase [(2-5)A synthetase] system. In the present study we show that crude extracts from tissue of S. domuncula collected from the sea display a considerable amount of (2-5)A synthetase activity; 16% of the ATP substrate is converted to the (2-5)A product, while tissue from specimens which were kept for 6 months in an aquarium shows only 1% of conversion. As…

Latent measles virus infection in Vero cells depending on a temperature-sensitive phenomenon.

1978

A latent infection by measles virus in a line of Vero cells could be maintained only at 37 degrees C. The conditions of temperature nonpermissiveness were associated with some block in virus production and/or release and with the establishment of an autointerference phenomenon. Reduction of the incubation temperature to 33.5 degrees C induced a rather rapid transition from the latent to a lytical infection with a recue of virus. The rescued virus exhibited a restricted capacity to grow at 37 degrees C.

Taimenen mädin säilyvyys ja alkioiden kasvu Savijoen kipsinlevitysalueella

2019

Pelloille tehtävän kipsinlevityksen vesistövaikutuksia tutkittiin Helsingin yliopiston ja Suomen ympäristökeskuksen yhteishankkeessa ”SAVE - Saaristomeren vedenlaadun parantaminen peltojen kipsikäsittelyllä”. Hanke oli ympäristöministeriön rahoittama hallituksen kärkihanke. Siinä missä kipsin, eli kalsiumsulfaatin, levitys on vähentänyt pelloilta tulevaa fosforikuormitusta, se on toisaalta nostanut pilottialuetta halkovan Savijoen sulfaattipitoisuuden kolminkertaiseksi. Suuren sulfaattipitoisuuden tiedetään olevan haitallista vesieliöille, kuten kaloille. Näin ollen Jyväskylän yliopisto selvitti kipsinlevityksen vaikutuksia taimenen (Salmo trutta) varhaisten elinvaiheiden säilyvyyteen ja ka…

Metabolism of Linoleic Acid or Mevalonate and 6-Pentyl-α-Pyrone Biosynthesis by Trichoderma Species

1993

The understanding of the biosynthetic pathway of 6-pentyl-α-pyrone in Trichoderma species was achieved by using labelled linoleic acid or mevalonate as a tracer. Incubation of growing cultures of Trichoderma harzianum and T. viride with [U- 14 C]linoleic acid or [5- 14 C]sodium mevalonate revealed that both fungal strains were able to incorporate these labelled compounds (50 and 15%, respectively). Most intracellular radioactivity was found in the neutral lipid fraction. At the initial time of incubation, the radioactivity from [ 14 C]linoleic acid was incorporated into 6-pentyl-α-pyrone more rapidly than that from [ 14 C]mevalonate. No radioactivity incorporation was detected in 6-pentyl-…

Anaerobic batch degradation of solid poultry slaughterhouse waste

2000

We studied anaerobic batch degradation of solid poultry slaughterhouse wastes with different initial waste and inoculum concentrations and waste-to-inoculum ratios and simulated the dynamics of the process with a new generation <METHANE> model. Our modelling results suggest that inhibited propionate degradation by long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) and inhibited hydrolysis by a high propionate concentration constituted the rate-limiting step in the waste degradation. Palmitate was the most abundant LCFA in the assays. Within 27 days of incubation, up to 0.55 to 0.67 m3 of methane (STP)/kg VS added was produced under the studied conditions. Lower waste-to-inoculum ratios exhibited a…

Enzyme Cytochemistry of Fungi

1973

Summary The results of a great number of investigationshave shown that enzyme cytochemical methods, which have been developed for the study of animal and human histology and cytology, can be successfully used for the study of enzyme patterns in yeasts, moulds, slime moulds, dermatophytes, phytopathogenic fungi and basidiomycetes. Whereas with the older, relatively unspecific procedures only presence or absence of enzymes could be studied, improved techniques allow the examination of the intracellular localization of enzymes under the light and especially the electron microscope. The results of those investigations are described together with methodological aspects of cultivation, incubation…
