Screening of ligands for the Ullmann synthesis of electron-rich diaryl ethers

In the search for new ligands for the Ullmann diaryl ether synthesis, permitting the coupling of electron-rich aryl bromides at relatively low temperatures, 56 structurally diverse multidentate ligands were screened in a model system that uses copper iodide in acetonitrile with potassium phosphate as the base. The ligands differed largely in their performance, but no privileged structural class could be identified.
Spin state switching in iron coordination compounds

The article deals with coordination compounds of iron(II) that may exhibit thermally induced spin transition, known as spin crossover, depending on the nature of the coordinating ligand sphere. Spin transition in such compounds also occurs under pressure and irradiation with light. The spin states involved have different magnetic and optical properties suitable for their detection and characterization. Spin crossover compounds, though known for more than eight decades, have become most attractive in recent years and are extensively studied by chemists and physicists. Glycopeptides from the mucin family decorated with tumour-associated carbohydrate antigens (TACA) have proven to be important target structures for the development of molecularly defined anti-cancer vaccines. The strategic incorporation of β-amino acid building blocks into such mucin-type sequences offers the potential to create pseudo-glycopeptide antigens with improved bioavailability for tumour immunotherapy. Unoriented and oriented membranes based on dendronized polymers and copolymers obtained by chemical modification of poly[2-(aziridin-1-yl) ethanol] (PAZE) with the dendron 3,4,5-tris[4-(n-dodecan-1-yloxy)benzyloxy]benzoate were considered. DSC, XRD, CP-MAS NMR and DETA, contribute to characterize the tendency to crystallize, the molecular mobility of the benzyloxy substituent, the dendritic liquid crystalline group and the clearing transition. The direct synthesis of syndiotactic polystyrene-block-polyethylene copolymer (sPS-b-PE) with a diblock structure has been achieved. The synthetic strategy consists of the sequential stereocontrolled polymerization of styrene and ethylene in the presence of a single catalytic system: cyclopentadienyltitanium(IV) trichloride activated by modified methylaluminoxane (CpTiCl3/MMAO). The reaction conditions suitable for affording the partially living polymerization of these monomers were identified, and the resulting copolymer, purified from contaminant homopolymers, was fully characterized. The Michael addition of dibenzylamine to (+)-tert-butyl perillate (3) and to (+)-tert-butyl phellandrate (6), derived from (S)-(−)-perillaldehyde (1), resulted in diastereomeric β-amino esters 7A–D in a moderately stereospecific reaction in a ratio of 76:17:6:1. After separation of the diastereoisomers, the major product, cis isomer 7A, was quantitatively isomerized to the minor component, trans-amino ester 7D. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a peroxisome proliferator known to increase the expression of the genes encoding the peroxisomal s-oxidation enzymes in rodents. Using RT-PCR, we analysed the expression of the Abcd2 and Abcd3 genes encoding the peroxisomal ABC transporters ALDRP (ALD related protein) and PMP70 (70 kDa peroxisomal membrane protein) in primary cultures of rats hepatocytes treated with sulfated DHEA. We observed a time (12-72h) and dose (125-500μM) dependent increase in the expression of both genes.

The oxidative ring closure reaction of some aryl-substituted thiosemicarbazones induced by "bona fide" one-electron abstracting agents was investigated, by means of both experimental and computational techniques. The corresponding 1,2,4-triazole derivatives were the only cyclization products observed. The occurrence of two slightly different mechanistic pathways for the reaction is discussed.
Conformation of dehydropentapeptides containing four achiral amino acid residues - controlling the role of L-valine.

Structural studies of pentapeptides containing an achiral block, built from two dehydroamino acid residues (ΔZPhe and ΔAla) and two glycines, as well as one chiral L-Val residue were performed using NMR spectroscopy. The key role of the L-Val residue in the generation of the secondary structure of peptides is discussed. The obtained results suggest that the strongest influence on the conformation of peptides arises from a valine residue inserted at the C-terminal position. The most ordered conformation was found for peptide Boc-Gly-ΔAla-Gly-ΔZPhe-Val-OMe (3), which adopts a right-handed helical conformation.
