The essay analyses the general ban for the donation of embryos placed into cryopreservation, stated by the Italian legislation n. 40/2004. Such a prevision causes a sine die conservation not only for embryos suitable for implantation, but also for those affected by genetic defects or diseases. The essay points out that donating both types of embryos, respectively, to adoption or to scientific fertility research preserves the dignity of the cells in storage, as a will supported by the consent of both gametes’ providers to the ultimate scope of solidarity.

The XENON1T experiment aims for the direct detection of dark matter in a detector filled with 3.3 tons of liquid xenon. In order to achieve the desired sensitivity, the background induced by radioactive decays inside the detector has to be sufficiently low. One major contributor is the β-emitter 85Kr which is present in the xenon. For XENON1T a concentration of natural krypton in xenon natKr/Xe<200ppq (parts per quadrillion, 1ppq=10-15mol/mol) is required. Tetranitroresorcin[4]arene: synthesis and structure of a new stereoisomer

The direct reaction between 2-nitroresorcinol and acetaldehyde in alkaline medium yields tetranitro-C1-resorcin[4]arene in a moderate 8.2% overall yield which was characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography, 1H NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). In solution and in the solid state, the product adopts a unique, thermally stable and unprecedented rcct-boat conformation.

HgGa2 Se4 under high pressure: An optical absorption study

High-pressure optical absorption measurements have been performed in defect chalcopyrite HgGa2Se4 to investigate the influence of pressure on the bandgap energy and its relation with the pressure-induced order–disorder processes that occur in this ordered-vacancy compound. Two different experiments have been carried out in which the sample undergoes either a partial or a total pressure-induced disorder process at 15.4 and 30.8 GPa, respectively. Combining critical perspectivation and personal account, I hope to offer a retrospective on my experience with the thought of Antonio Candido and a contribution to what we could consider his legacy. First I talk about my translation of a selection of his essays to German for an anthology published in 2005, about the translator’s readings and reflections, which serve as a starting point for rethinking some fundamental issues of Candido’s thought, such as the critical task of teaching and studying literature, also the question of literature’s social (ir)relevance in our days, as analyzed in the famous essay “O direito a literatura” (“The right to literature”, 1988).

The paper is an attempt to illustrate the linguistic interpretation of speech, known that it remains insufficiently resolved, especially for Romanian. The cause is given by the multitude of criteria that can or should be considered important in speech processing.
