Holmium(III) Single-Ion Magnet for Cryomagnetic Refrigeration Based on an MRI Contrast Agent Derivative

The coexistence of field-induced blockage of the magnetization and significant magnetocaloric effects in the low-temperature region occurs in a mononuclear holmium(III) diethylenetriamine-N,N,N′,N″,N″-pentaacetate complex, whose gadolinium(III) analogue is a commercial MRI contrast agent. Both properties make it a suitable candidate for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration, thus enlarging the variety of applications of this simple class of multifunctional molecular nanomagnets.

The cytotoxic properties of Natural Coumarins Isolated from roots of Ferulago campestris (Apiaceae) and of synthetic ester derivatives aegelinol

Grandivittin (1), agasyllin (2), aegelinol benzoate (3) and felamidin (20), four natural coumarins isolated from Ferulago campestris, and several synthetic ester derivatives of aegelinol (4) were tested against four tumor cell lines. Some of them were shown to be marginally cytotoxic against the A549 lung cancer cell line.

A new hyaluronic acid pH sensitive derivative obtained by ATRP for potential oral administration of proteins

Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has been successfully employed to obtain a new derivative of hyaluronic acid (HA) able to change its solubility as a function of external pH and then to be potentially useful for intestinal release of bioactive molecules, included enzymes and proteins. In particular, a macroinitiator has been prepared by linking 2-bromo-2-methypropionic acid (BMP) to the amino groups of ethylenediamino derivative of tetrabutyl ammonium salt of HA (HA-TBA-EDA). Synthesis and Anti-Tumor Activity of Novel Aminomethylated Derivatives of Isoliquiritigenin

A series of new aminomethylated derivatives of isoliquiritigenin was synthesized. The structures of the compounds were confirmed by IR, MS, NMR, 13C-NMR and elemental analyses. Cytotoxic activities of these derivatives towards the human prostatic cell line PC-3, human mammary cancer cell line MCF-7 and human oophoroma cell line HO-8910 in vitro were tested. The IC50 values showed cytotoxic activities of some of these new derivatives were relatively strong. Furthermore, tumor growth inhibition in vivo of aminomethylated derivatives of isoliquiritigenin 15 was superior to that of isoliquritigenin and reached inhibition rates of 71.68%. Synthesis of N-diisopropyl phosphoryl benzyl-tetrahydroisoquinoline, a new class of mitochondrial complexes I and III inhibitors

The synthesis of N-(O,O-diisopropylphosphoryl)-benzyltetrahydroisoquinoline (3) has been achieved in a 'one pot' procedure from imine (2) and diisopropyl-phosphorochloridate (1) generated in situ (POCl3 + iPrOH). Compound 3 is the first benzyltetrahydroisoquinoline derivative found to be a potent inhibitor of mitochondrial complexes I and III, and therefore it opens a new perspective with this series of compounds as they can be considered as new class of antitumor agents.

Unprecedented new nonadecylpara-hydroperoxycinnamate isolated fromErythrina excelsaand its cytotoxic activity

A new unprecedented cinnamate derivative (1) was obtained from Erythrina excelsa (Leguminosae) and identified as nonadecyl para-hydroperoxycinnamate. This compound was isolated together with three known compounds, namely lupeol (2), mixture of sitosterol and stigmasterol (3), and isoneorautenol (4). Their structures were established on the basis of NMR and mass spectroscopic data in conjunction with those reported in the literature. Compound 1 was evaluated for its capability of inhibiting cancer cell lines and growth of a panel of microbial strains. It turned out that 1 is moderately to significantly cytotoxic against six cancer cell lines and shows weak to no antimicrobial activity.

A new depsidone derivative from mangrove sediment derived fungus

A new depsidone derivative botryorhodine I (1), along with eight known compounds (2-9) were obtained from solid rice cultures of the fungal strain, Lasiodiplodia theobromae M4.2-2 isolated from a mangrove sediment sample. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated on the basis of 1 D and 2 D NMR analysis as well as by HRESIMS. All compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic potential against the mouse lymphoma cell line L5178Y as well as for their antibacterial activities against a panel of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. Temporal patterns of action potentials influence a variety of activity-dependent intra- and intercellular processes and play an important role in theories of neural coding.
