Not a current fashion, but a truth since 1884
2011
We thank Kucharz [1] for the valuable historical comment to our review focusing on the role of oral infection on systemic diseases [2]. The majority of scientists today write and read the English language whereas articles in Polish and German are scarcely known outside of Poland and Germany, respectively. For these reasons, the contribution of Kaczorowsky [3] is commonly forgotten in medical literature, but the letter of Kurchaz properly acknowledges this pioneer researcher in the periodontal medicine. We also thank Blum [4] for adding his results [5,6] to our review article. As the number of references citable is limited, we did not cite the articles written by Blum et al. [5,6], but we re…
THE HOUSE THAT IS NOT THERE: THE HOME FEELING IN JONATHAN RABAN’S LANGUAGE IN FOREIGN LAND
2021
This work aims to analyse the novel of the journalist and novelist Jonathan Raban, Foreign Land, trying to highlight how, through the language used, the author manages to elaborate a personal, intimate and even dramatic vision of themes such as the relationship between man and the environment, the sense of uprooting and the love for the sea that are typical themes of travel literature within which this novel is enrolled. More specifically, the text, taken from a work of reading analysis and translation of the Rabanian work from English to Italian, aims to highlight the metaphorical dimension of the home feeling made particularly effective by the parallelism between the inner dimension of th…

2020
We perform a large scale analysis of a list of fintech terms in (i) news and blogs in English language and (ii) professional descriptions of companies operating in many countries. By using methods of complex networks that are specifically designed to deal with heterogeneous systems, our analysis of a large set of professional descriptions of companies shows that companies having fintech terms in their description present over-expressions of specific attributes of country, muni…
What Gender-Neutral Legislation Owes to Grammar: The Concept of ‘Gender’ in Legal English and the Italian Guidelines for Use of Gender-Sensitive Lang…
2022
Gender-neutral language, also called non-sexist, genderinclusive, or non-gender-specific language, refers to language that includes words or expressions that cannot be taken to refer to one gender only. As a matter of fact, languages vary widely in terms of gender systems showing differences in the number of classes, underlying assignment rules and how and where gender is marked. In everyday speech, the word gender is usually associated with the biological and social differences between men and women (as in the case of Italian), and the view that grammatical gender mirrors natural gender is still evident in the terms masculine, feminine, and neuter that are used to label individual gender d…
