Changes in collagen cross-linking of articular cartilage are revealed by spectral reflectance imaging

2012

Excessive cross-linking of collagen during aging may contribute to degeneration of articular cartilage. Traditionally, the amount of cross-links is derived by using destructive high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). However, a sensitive, non-destructive method could help to evaluate tissue integrity, including cross-links. We increased collagen cross-linking in bovine articular cartilage by controlled threose incubation. During the incubation, optical spectral reflectance images of the samples were captured and related to HPLC results using regression analysis. Significant correlations with reflectance and cross-links were observed. When further developed the optical method may enab…

Effect of Mn Doping on the Optical Properties of Chalcogenide Compounds ZnS and ZnTe

2020

In this paper, the influence of the addition of Mn on the optical properties of the binary compounds ZnS and ZnTe deposited by a close-spaced vacuum sublimation method onto nonoriented glass at different substrate temperatures was considered. The spectral dependences of the transmittance T (λ), reflectance R (λ) and the absorption α (λ), as well as the bandgap for each material (Eg) were measured and calculated.

Miradas urbanas del profesorado iberoamericano desde la cultura visual

2018

We are interested in knowing if there is a proper view of the teaching staff towards the urban reality. We start with verbal and visual descriptions, through images and texts. The research has been developed in Santiago de Chile, Valencia, Lima, Medellin, Montevideo and Buenos Aires, and combines direct participatory actions with personal interviews. The methodology follows a mixed method and is based on a case study that is complemented by research based on the arts. We concluded that there is a particular view of the teaching group towards their own city, which is full of critical reflection. This is a topic that has been little addressed and needs more attention.

Georges Candilis, architettura in divenire - Habitat adapté, climatique, évolutif

2014

The thesis reconstructs the roots of the architectural sustainability proposing an investigation about the birth of the concept of habitat within the CIAM and their development by Team 10. The study of the production of Candi…

Behavioral Restriction Determines Left Attentional Bias: Preliminary Evidences From COVID-19 Lockdown

2021

International audience; During the COVID-19 lockdown, individuals were forced to remain at home, hence severely limiting the interaction within environmental stimuli, reducing the cognitive load placed on spatial competences. The effects of the behavioral restriction on cognition have been little examined. The present study is aimed at analyzing the effects of lockdown on executive function prominently involved in adapting behavior to new environmental demands. We analyze non-verbal fluency abilities, as indirectly providing a measure of cognitive flexibility to react to spatial changes. Sixteen students (mean age 20.75; SD 1.34), evaluated before the start of the lockdown (T1) in a battery…

Diffusion of digital culture: analysis of the Internet forum of a MOOC

2017

When MOOCs are increasing all over the world as a mean for improving the diffusion of culture and science, it is interesting to observe how those MOOCS build communities of knowledge, and which is the impact of those communities on the acquisition of knowledge. In this article, we present the principles of design of the MOOC Digital & Culture Writing that aims to spread digital culture. Then, we analyse the messages posted on forums by the related community, and the cognitive process to which they refer. Posts analysis reveals reflexivity processes when participants are writing on forums. It appears that reflexivity cognitive processes are at the heart of both social interaction and digital…

Which technical factors explain competition performance in air rifle shooting?

2017

The purpose of this study was to analyze whether the same shooting technical components determining performance in testing situation also affect performance in competition situation and how the technical skill level of these components changes from training to competition. Thirteen Finnish national (10) and junior national (3) rifle team members participated in the study. Participants were measured in competition and training situation within a five-day period. Shooting score, aiming point trajectory and postural balance were measured from both situations. Shooting performance decreased from training to competition situation (10.31 ± 0.13 vs. 10.14 ± 0.17, p < 0.05), accompanied by a de…

Effect of inter-individual variability and intraguild interferences on the foraging strategies of seed-eating carabid species

2017

Making a choice requires, implicitly, an investment of time in one behaviour at the expense of an investment in another. Being choosy would increase the risk of losing many food item opportunities to competitors, and is directly in conflict with other essential tasks such as predator avoidance. Individuals are thus expected to adjust their level of choosiness in response to the competition and predation context. The available behavioural ecological theory and the empirical ecology of carabids would suggest that competition and predation interference induces changes in the foraging behaviour of carabid individuals. Carabids typically operate within communities in which competition and predat…
