Orthographic depth and its impact on universal predictors of reading: a cross-language investigation
2010
Alphabetic orthographies differ in the transparency of their letter-sound mappings, with English orthography being less transparent than other alphabetic scripts. The outlier status of English has led scientists to question the generality of findings based on English-language studies. We investigated the role of phonological awareness, memory, vocabulary, rapid naming, and nonverbal intelligence in reading performance across five languages lying at differing positions along a transparency continuum (Finnish, Hungarian, Dutch, Portuguese, and French). Results from a sample of 1,265 children in Grade 2 showed that phonological awareness was the main factor associated with reading performance…
Reading and Spelling Development Across Languages Varying in Orthographic Consistency: Do Their Paths Cross?
2020
We examined the cross‐lagged relations between reading and spelling in five alphabetic orthographies varying in consistency (English, French, Dutch, German, and Greek). Nine hundred and forty‐one children were followed from Grade 1 to Grade 2 and were tested on word and pseudoword reading fluency and on spelling to dictation. Results indicated that the relations across languages were unidirectional: Earlier reading predicted subsequent spelling. However, we also found significant differences between languages in the strength of the effects of earlier reading on subsequent spelling. These findings suggest that, once children master decoding, the observed differences between languages are not…
Generating dialogical practices in mental health: experiences from southern norway, 1998-2008.
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10488-013-0479-3 In Norway and many other countries, political guidelines prescribe the development of mental health strategies with both a service user's perspective and a treatment system established by the local authority. The development of new strategies frequently involves challenges regarding procedures and treatment as well as a view of knowledge and humanity. Dialogical practices might provide a solution for these challenges not only because of its procedures but also due to its attitudes tow…
Vamos a Traducir los MRV(Let’s Translate the VRM): Linguistic and Cultural Inferences Drawn from Translating a Verbal Coding System from English into…
1997
Translating a verbal coding system from one language to another can yield unexpected insights into the process of communication in different cultures. This paper describes the problems and understandings we encountered as we translated a verbal response modes (VRM) taxonomy from English into Spanish. Standard translations of text (e.g., psychotherapeutic dialogue) systematically change the form of certain expressions, so supposedly equivalent expressions had different VRM codings in the two languages. Prominent examples of English forms whose translation had different codes in Spanish included tags, question forms, and "let's" expressions. Insofar as participants use such forms to convey nu…
Mutual intelligibility among the sign languages of Belgium and the Netherlands
2015
AbstractIn an exploratory study of mutual intelligibility between the sign languages of the northern part of Belgium (Flemish Sign Language, VGT), the southern part of Belgium (French Belgian Sign Language, LSFB), and the Netherlands (Sign Language of the Netherlands, NGT), we tested the comprehension of VGT by signers of LSFB and NGT. In order to measure the influence of iconic structures (classifier constructions and constructed action) that linguistic analyses have shown to be similar across different sign languages, two genres were compared: narrative and informative signing. To investigate the effect of the overlap between the spoken languages surrounding the Dutch and Flemish Deaf com…
Ovarian tissue cryopreservation and transplantation in menopause: new perspective of therapy in postmenopausal women and the importance of ethical an…
2023
Menopausal transition entails a progressive decrease in hormone production by the ovaries that lead to important physical and psychological changes that could significantly affect quality of life. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) administered from the onset of menopausal symptoms usually improves quality of life and life expectancy. Nevertheless, it is not risk-free. Ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) has been investigated as a potential new strategy for delaying menopause and/or to avoid HRT. This review analyzes the critical points of HRT to assess whether OTC and subsequent reimplantation can affect postmenopausal management. We assessed available randomized clinical trials in PubMed…
Study of the MOCVD growth of ZnO on GaAs substrates: Influence of the molar ratio of the precursors on structural and morphological properties
2007
Abstract ZnO thin films were grown by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) on GaAs(100) and GaAs(111)A substrates. The growth experiments were performed at temperatures ranging from 290 to 500 ∘C and atmospheric pressure. Diethylzinc (DEZn) and tertiary butanol (tBuOH) were used as Zn and O precursors, respectively. The crystallinity of the grown films was studied by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and the thickness and morphology were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The influence of substrate orientation and molar ratio of the precursors on the crystalline orientation and morphology of the ZnO grown films was analysed.
Synthesis And Sorptive Properties Of Dodecasil 1 H With An Acessible Pore System
1994
Abstract The synthesis of Dodecasil 1H was studied in the system SiO2/1-adamantylamine/NH3/water with the objective of controlling the particle size and the morphology of the crystals. Since nucleation occurs in a very early stage of the synthesis, the heating rate to the final temperature have a strong influence on both parameters. Using seed crystals and such a heating programme, the expensive template 1-adamantylamine can be reduced to so small amounts, that a nearly template free pore system is achieved. The emptiness of the pore system was demonstrated from adsorption measurement using He and H2.
Evolution of the “knitting pattern” morphology in ABC triblock copolymers
1996
A new morphology of ternary ABC triblock copolymers is presented which results from the asymmetric interaction between a centre block (poly(ethylene-co-butene)) to different end blocks (polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate)). This morphology with the appearance of a “knitting pattern” can be described as an intermediate of a morphology of A, B and C lamellae and a morphology of A and C lamellae with B cylinders at the A/C interface.
“Lições do mestre“: da tradução como viagem e da literatura como direito
2019
Combining critical perspectivation and personal account, I hope to offer a retrospective on my experience with the thought of Antonio Candido and a contribution to what we could consider his legacy. First I talk about my translation of a selection of his essays to German for an anthology published in 2005, about the translator’s readings and reflections, which serve as a starting point for rethinking some fundamental issues of Candido’s thought, such as the critical task of teaching and studying literature, also the question of literature’s social (ir)relevance in our days, as analyzed in the famous essay “O direito a literatura” (“The right to literature”, 1988).
