Residence Time Analysis in the Albufera of Valencia, a Mediterranean Coastal Lagoon, Spain

The Albufera of Valencia is a coastal lagoon located in the western area of the Mediterranean Sea, in the Iberian Peninsula. It has an area of 23.1 km2 and an average depth of only 1 m, with a maximum depth of 1.6 m. This lagoon is the remnants of an original and more extensive wetland of about 220 km2 which is now mostly dedicated to rice cultivation. Surface water is supplied through several main and many secondary canals for a total of 64 water entry points and three exit points to the sea. Diachronic variations in demographic rates have frequently reflected social transformations and a (more or less evident) impact of sequential economic downturns. By assessing changes over time in Total Fertility Rate (TFR) at the regional scale in Italy, our study investigates the long-term transition (1952–2019) characteristic of Mediterranean fertility, showing a continuous decline of births since the late 1970s and marked disparities between high- and low-fertility regions along the latitude gradient. Genetic heterogeneity and recombination in human type 2 astroviruses

ABSTRACT Novel lineages of human astrovirus (HAstV) types 2, 2c, and 2d have been identified. Upon sequencing of the 3′ end of the genome, the type 2c and 2d HAstVs were found to be open reading frame 1b (ORF1b)-ORF2 recombinant, with ORF1b being derived from type 3 and type 1 HAstVs, respectively. An ORF2 interlineage recombinant strain, 2c/2b, was also identified.

Phytochromes sense red/far-red light and control many biological processes in plants, fungi, and bacteria. Although crystal structures of dark and light adapted states have been determined, the molecular mechanisms underlying photoactivation remains elusive. Here we demonstrate that the conserved tongue region of the PHY domain of a 57kDa photosensory module of Deinococcus radiodurans phytochrome, changes from a structurally heterogeneous dark state to an ordered light activated state. Heterogeneity at the HLA-DRB1 locus and risk for multiple sclerosis.

Variation in major histocompatibility complex genes on chromosome 6p21.3, specifically the human leukocyte antigen HLA-DR2 or DRB1*1501-DQB1*0602 extended haplotype, confers risk for multiple sclerosis (MS). Previous studies of DRB1 variation and both MS susceptibility and phenotypic expression have lacked statistical power to detect modest genotypic influences, and have demonstrated conflicting results. Results derived from analyses of 1339 MS families indicate DRB1 variation influences MS susceptibility in a complex manner. Clinico-biological characteristics of patients with myelofibrosis: an analysis of 1,000 cases from the Spanish Registry of Myelofibrosis

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE MYELOFIBROSIS: is an infrequent chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm. We aimed to describe the clinico-biological characteristics, treatment, and evolutive course of myelofibrosis patients in Spain.; MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 1,000 patients from the Spanish Registry of Myelofibrosis diagnosed with primary (n=641) or secondary (n=359) myelofibrosis were analysed.; RESULTS: Median age was 68 years. The frequency of constitutional symptoms, moderate to severe anaemia (Hb<10g/dL), and symptomatic splenomegaly was 35%, 36%, and 17%, respectively.
