THE INNER TERRITORIES: FROM THE MARGINS TO COSMOPOLITAN CENTRES
2021
The article proposes a reflection on the cosmopolitanism linked to the “marginalised” parts of Italy, where social, economic, and infrastructural decline and the consequent abandonment of places are met with stories of renewal in which the relationship between inhabitants and foreigners constitutes the basis for starting local development processes able to activate new urban networks based on cultural interaction and to generate resilient relations, welcoming processes, and new communities. In this new “cosmopolitan nomadism”, we can recognise an opportunity for territories and communities to regenerate spatial and social relations: innovation and culture, permanent exchange, and neutral en…
From the crowd to the market: The role of reward-based crowdfunding performance in attracting professional investors
2017
Abstract We focus on new technology-based entrepreneurial ventures engaging in reward-based crowdfunding and examine the effect of their performance in such funding channel on the likelihood of securing subsequent funding from professional investors. We also study how this effect is influenced by the presence of patents granted for the new product idea and the entrepreneur social capital. Results from a sample of technology projects launched on Kickstarter demonstrate that pledging a higher amount of money in crowdfunding can ignite professional investors’ interest and thus help secure subsequent funding. However, this positive evidence is effective only when complemented by the presence of…
B-type natriuretic peptide trend predicts clinical significance of worsening renal function in acute heart failure
2019
Aims In acute heart failure (AHF), relationships between changes in B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and worsening renal function (WRF) and its prognostic implications have not been fully determined. We investigated the relationship between WRF and a decrease in BNP with in-hospital and 1-year mortality in AHF. Methods and results The Acute Kidney Injury NGAL Evaluation of Symptomatic heart faIlure Study (AKINESIS) was a prospective, international, multicentre study of AHF patients. Severe WRF (sWRF) was a sustained increase of >= 44.2 mu mol/L (0.5 mg/dL) or >= 50% in creatinine, non-severe WRF (nsWRF) was a non-sustained increase of >= 26.5 mu mol/L (0.3 mg/dL) or >= 50% in cr…
Intangibles - enhancing access to cities cultural heritage through interpretation
2013
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to utilise commodification for the conservation and promotion of cultural heritage in cities by developing interpretative strategies, specifically enabling access to intangible cultural heritage through its tangible parts.Design/methodology/approachIn total, three case studies were conducted in the cities of Amsterdam, Genoa and Leipzig, through a workshop cycle with destination and local tourism stakeholders and citizen representatives, to develop interpretative strategies for the cities.FindingsThe paper identifies tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the three cities, and integrates them into stories and outlines the development of an interpret…
Monocyte distribution width (MDW) as a screening tool for early detecting sepsis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
2022
Abstract Objectives Monocyte distribution has recently emerged as a promising biomarker of sepsis, especially in acute setting, such as Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of monocyte distribution width (MDW) for early detecting patients with sepsis by performing a systemic review and meta-analysis of published studies. Methods Relevant publications were identified by a systematic literature search on PubMed and Google Scholar from inception to September 07, 2021. Studies were divided into two groups based on the sepsis criteria applied, namely sepsis-2 or sepsis-3. Results Ten studies including 9,475 individuals, of whom 1,370 with sepsis…
Entry mode choice in the internationalisation of the hotel industry: a holistic approach
2011
This paper empirically investigates the entry mode choice in the hotel industry. Based on more than 1200 entry decisions, which covers practically all operations carried out by the majority of Spanish hotel chains up to 2009, the study attempts to (a) identify the factors that influence the mode choice of incorporating each new hotel within the chain and (b) to reflect the specific nature of the hotel industry with regard to the results obtained from samples of other industries. The results suggest the importance of considering a holistic approach that facilitates the understanding of a complex phenomenon which is not always explained just by efficiency considerations. Additionally, the res…
Higher Fluid Balance Increases the Risk of Death From Sepsis: Results From a Large International Audit
2017
Contains fulltext : 177598.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) OBJECTIVES: Excessive fluid therapy in patients with sepsis may be associated with risks that outweigh any benefit. We investigated the possible influence of early fluid balance on outcome in a large international database of ICU patients with sepsis. DESIGN: Observational cohort study. SETTING: Seven hundred and thirty ICUs in 84 countries. PATIENTS: All adult patients admitted between May 8 and May 18, 2012, except admissions for routine postoperative surveillance. For this analysis, we included only the 1,808 patients with an admission diagnosis of sepsis. Patients were stratified according to quartiles of cumulative f…
Monte Carlo evaluation of kerma in an HDR brachytherapy bunker
2004
In recent years, the use of high dose rate (HDR) after-loader machines has greatly increased due to the shift from traditional Cs-137/Ir-192 low dose rate (LDR) to HDR brachytherapy. The method used to calculate the required concrete and, where appropriate, lead shielding in the door is based on analytical methods provided by documents published by the ICRP, the IAEA and the NCRP. The purpose of this study is to perform a more realistic kerma evaluation at the entrance maze door of an HDR bunker using the Monte Carlo code GEANT4. The Monte Carlo results were validated experimentally. The spectrum at the maze entrance door, obtained with Monte Carlo, has an average energy of about 110 keV, m…
Systematic Analysis of Readability of Patient Information on Internet Pages from Departments for Trauma Surgery of German University Hospitals
2020
The need-based information transfer in education as well as for the recruitment of patients becomes more and more relevant. Here, the internet has emerged as an increasingly important factor in recent years and therefore information pages on hospital homepages can be very helpful. However, it is known that basic text comprehension skills are lacking among large populations. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the readability of the patient information available on the websites of trauma departments of German university hospitals. For this purpose, a search for information material on 10 different diagnoses was carried out. Out of 360 texts possible, 185 were found and assigned to 2 …
