Control of Flow Rate in Pipeline Using PID Controller

2019

In this paper a PID controller is utilized in order to control the flow rate of the heavy-oil in pipelines by controlling the vibration in motor-pump. A torsional actuator is placed on the motor-pump in order to control the vibration on motor and consequently controlling the flow rates in pipelines. The necessary conditions for asymptotic stability of the proposed controller is validated by implementing the Lyapunov stability theorem. The theoretical concepts are validated utilizing numerical simulations and analysis, which proves the effectiveness of the PID controller in the control of flow rates in pipelines.

Feasible glass‐melting process assisted by microwaves

2019

[EN] The advantages of microwave (MW) energy processing have been verified in the sintering of a ceramic frit at a pre-industrial scale. The challenge of achieving high temperature using MW energy at such dimensions was overcome and a mix of natural raw materials was heated until its fluxing point. Changes in dielectric properties of the raw materials mix were also measured in situ with the increase in temperature, being in accordance to thermal processes of a conventional heating process. The properties of the resulting ceramic frit were compared with the same frit obtained by the conventional sintering method. Both frits showed similar thermal behavior regarding DTA-TGA, heating microscop…

The Microbiota Promotes Arterial Thrombosis in Low-Density Lipoprotein Receptor-Deficient Mice

2019

Our results demonstrate a functional role for the commensal microbiota in atherothrombosis. In a ferric chloride injury model of the carotid artery, GF C57BL/6J mice had increased occlusion times compared to colonized controls. Interestingly, in late atherosclerosis, HFD-fed GF Ldlr−/− mice had reduced plaque rupture-induced thrombus growth in the carotid artery and diminished ex vivo thrombus formation under arterial flow conditions.

Exome chip association study excluded the involvement of rare coding variants with large effect sizes in the etiology of anorectal malformations

2019

IntroductionAnorectal malformations (ARM) are rare congenital malformations, resulting from disturbed hindgut development. A genetic etiology has been suggested, but evidence for the involvement of specific genes is scarce. We evaluated the contribution of rare and low-frequency coding variants in ARM etiology, assuming a multifactorial model.MethodsWe analyzed 568 Caucasian ARM patients and 1,860 population-based controls using the Illumina Human Exome Beadchip array, which contains >240,000 rare and low-frequency coding variants. GenomeStudio clustering and calling was followed by re-calling of 'no-calls' using zCall for patients and controls simultaneously. Single variant and gene-bas…

Beyond robust design: an example of synergy between statistics and advanced engineering design

2002

Higher efficiency and effectiveness of Research & Development phases can be attained using advanced statistical methodologies. In this work statistical methodologies are combined with a deterministic approach to engineering design. In order to show the potentiality of such integration, a simple but effective example is presented. It concerns the problem of optimising the performance of a paper helicopter. The desgin of this simple device is not new in quality engineering literature and has been mainly used for educational purposes. Taking full advantage of fundamental engineering knowledge, an aerodynamic model is originally formulated in order to describe the fligh of the helicopter. S…

A new tool to classifying new technology-based firm prospects and expectations

1999

Abstract This is an exploratory insight into the profile and prospects of growth and success attached to one category of firms, the so-called New Technology-Based Firms (NTBFs). Analysis of our empirically based data from 30 NTBFs leads us to the Market-Technology-Entrepreneurial (M-T-E) Matrix, whose eight three-dimensional quadrants serve to classify high-tech new ventures by performance. A factorial analysis coupled with a discriminate analysis are the statistical tools employed in obtaining the M-T-E Matrix and ascribing predictive capacity to it.

A heuristic to schedule flexible job-shop in a glass factory

2005

We describe the design and implementation of a scheduling system in a glass factory. The factory produces a large variety of manufactured glass objects in a complex process ranging from melting the glass in the furnaces and blowing it automatically or manually to decorating, assembling and packing it. The structure basically corresponds to a flexible job-shop scheduling problem with some special characteristics. On the one hand, dealing with hot liquid glass imposes no-wait constraints on some operations. On the other hand, skilled workers performing some manual tasks are modelled as special machines. The system produces approximate solutions in very short computing times, trying to minimiz…

Sard property for the endpoint map on some Carnot groups

2016

In Carnot-Caratheodory or sub-Riemannian geometry, one of the major open problems is whether the conclusions of Sard's theorem holds for the endpoint map, a canonical map from an infinite-dimensional path space to the underlying finite-dimensional manifold. The set of critical values for the endpoint map is also known as abnormal set, being the set of endpoints of abnormal extremals leaving the base point. We prove that a strong version of Sard's property holds for all step-2 Carnot groups and several other classes of Lie groups endowed with left-invariant distributions. Namely, we prove that the abnormal set lies in a proper analytic subvariety. In doing so we examine several characterizat…

Sub-Finsler Geodesics on the Cartan Group

2018

This paper is a continuation of the work by the same authors on the Cartan group equipped with the sub-Finsler $\ell_\infty$ norm. We start by giving a detailed presentation of the structure of bang-bang extremal trajectories. Then we prove upper bounds on the number of switchings on bang-bang minimizers. We prove that any normal extremal is either bang-bang, or singular, or mixed. Consequently, we study mixed extremals. In particular, we prove that every two points can be connected by a piecewise smooth minimizer, and we give a uniform bound on the number of such pieces.
