Teaching Physical Education in English using CLIL Methodology: A Critical Perspective
2015
Abstract Relatively little research has been carried out in Europe on teaching Physical Education (PE) in English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) using the CLIL method. Although CLIL is widely used throughout Europe, the PE content is often limited merely to technical-practical skills without any significant links to a socio-cultural context, critical thinking and/or knowledge acquisition. The aim of this study is to integrate CLIL with the epistemological perspective of critical pedagogy applied to physical education (Kirk, 2014). A theoretical “deconstructive” method will be used to provide guidelines for teaching physical education through CLIL. A cultural content based on language, culture and…
Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor Induces Inflammation and Predicts Spinal Progression in Ankylosing Spondylitis
2017
Objective: To investigate the role of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in the pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Methods: Patients who met the modified New York criteria for AS were recruited for the study. Healthy volunteers, rheumatoid arthritis patients, and osteoarthritis patients were included as controls. Based on the annual rate of increase in modified Stoke AS Spine Score (mSASSS), AS patients were classified as progressors or nonprogressors. MIF levels in serum and synovial fluid were quantitated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Predictors of AS progression were evaluated using logistic regression analysis. Immunohistochemical analysis of ileal tissue was…
Fovisma virziena māksliniecisko izteiksmes līdzekļu iepazīšana vizuālās mākslas stundās 7. klasē
2018
Efficient two-step synthesis of face-to-face meso-substituted bis(corrole) dyads
2008
The synthesis of face-to-face meso-substituted bis(corrole) systems was revisited. By using a new synthetic pathway, the reaction was generalized to any type of linker and the yield was considerably increased. The dyads were obtained in yields up to 20 % from a dialdehyde linker and dipyrromethane in a one-step reaction. The best reaction conditions required a decreased amount of TFA catalyst (1.4 equiv.) and a large excess of dipyrromethane (up to 8 equiv). Under these conditions, four bis(corrole)s linked by 2,2′-diphenyl ether, 9,9-dimethylxanthene, anthracene, and dibenzofuran spacers were synthesized.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Characterization of liver cytokeratin as a major target antigen of anti-SLA antibodies.
1990
Abstract Anti-SLA antibodies characterize a newly defined subgroup of patients with autoimmune chronic active hepatitis. The aim of the present study was the immunochemical characterization of the target antigen(s) of anti-SLA antibodies. Anti-SLA-positive sera were found to contain high titres of anti-cytokeratin antibodies. In immunoblotting analyses with 100 000 × g supernatants of human liver homogenates (S-100) these sera recognized various proteins with a molecular mass of 40–60 kDa. These proteins were also recognized by monoclonal anti-cytokeratin antibodies. Two-dimensional co-electrophoresis and immunoblotting analysis of S-100 and liver cytokeratins showed that anti-SLA antibodie…
CrELISA: a fast and robust enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay bypassing the need for purification of recombinant protein
2004
A multitude of antigens has been recently identified by screening of cDNA expression libraries derived from human tumors with autologous sera. Using a phage autoantibody assay and small panels of sera derived from cancer patients or controls it has been shown that some of these antigens display cancer-associated autoantibody responses. The diagnostic and prognostic significance of these potentially cancer-related autoantibodies remains unclear until large-scale assays are developed and serological data are available for hundreds of cancer patients and controls. The major bottleneck for the development of large-scale assays are the cloning, expression and the purification of each of the resp…
Presence of potentially pathogenic free-living amoebae strains from well water samples in Guinea-Bissau
2014
Free-living amoebae (FLA) include opportunistic pathogens such as Naegleria fowleri, Balamuthia mandrillaris, and the genera Sappinia and Acanthamoeba. In this study, a survey was conducted in order to evaluate the presence of potentially pathogenic amoebic strains in water samples collected from wells located in the western part of Guinea-Bissau. The samples were left to precipitate for 48 hours and then the sediments were seeded on non-nutrient agar plates containing Escherichia coli spread and cultures were checked daily for the presence of FLA. Identification of FLA strains was based on the morphological and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using the 18S rDNA or 16S mitochondrial rDNA ge…
Beads of Acryloylated Polyaminoacidic Matrices Containing 5-Fluorouracil for Drug Delivery
2002
Spherical polymeric microparticles have been prepared by a reverse phase suspension polymerization technique. The starting polymer was alpha,beta-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA), partially derivatized with glycidylmethacrylate (GMA). PHEA-GMA copolymer (PHG) was crosslinked in the presence of N,N'-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA) or N,N'-ethylenebisacrylamide (EBA). 5-fluorouracil was incorporated into PHG-DMAA or PHG-EBA beads both during and after the crosslinking process. Swelling studies revealed a high affinity toward aqueous medium, influenced by the presence of 5-fluorouracil. The in vitro release study showed that the release rate depends on the chemical structure of the beads…
Wine Consumption and Oral Cavity Cancer: Friend or Foe, Two Faces of Janus
2020
The health benefits of moderate wine consumption have been extensively studied during the last few decades. Some studies have demonstrated protective associations between moderate drinking and several diseases including oral cavity cancer (OCC). However, due to the various adverse effects related to ethanol content, the recommendation of moderate wine consumption has been controversial. The polyphenolic components of wine contribute to its beneficial effects with different biological pathways, including antioxidant, lipid regulating and anti-inflammatory effects. On the other hand, in the oral cavity, ethanol is oxidized to form acetaldehyde, a metabolite with genotoxic properties. This rev…
