Bone marrow-derived progenitors are greatly reduced in patients with severe COPD and low-BMI.

2009

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients have reduced circulating hemopoietic progenitors. We hypothesized that severity of COPD parallels the decrease in progenitors and that the reduction in body mass index (BMI) could be associated with more severe bone marrow dysfunction. We studied 39 patients with moderate to very severe COPD (18 with low-BMI and 21 with normal-BMI) and 12 controls. Disease severity was associated to a greater reduction in circulating progenitors. Proangiogenetic and inflammatory markers correlated with disease severity parameters. Compared to normal-BMI patients, low-BMI patients showed: greater reduction in circulating progenitors; higher VEGF-A, VEGF-C…

Enzym-histochemische Studien am cervicalen Drsenfeld des Uterus

1972

Experience in Spain with the first patients in home hemodialysis treated with low-flow dialysate monitors

2021

Messung der gesamtaktivität von glutamat-oxalacetat-transaminase in leberhomogenaten

1971

Abstract A method is described, suitable for routine measurements of the total glutamicoxaloacetic transaminase activity in a large number of liver samples by treatment of homogenates with the detergent Triton X-100. Comparison with other methods and with results of other investigators shows that this method is superior. Neither sonic treatment nor freezing and thawing leads to a complete liberation of the mitochondrial transaminase activity. A number of other enzyme activities can be assayed in Triton-treated homogenates, such as glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, glutamate dehydrogenase, NADP-isocitric dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, and malate dehy drogenase, β-Hydroxybutyrate dehydrog…

Molecular and kinetic properties of lactate dehydrogenase in the degenerating peripheral nerve

1966

Abstract Electrophoretic and catalytic studies have been carried out on lactate dehydrogenase of normal and transected sciatic nerves of the rat. Lactate dehydrogenase of the intact nerve exhibits an almost even distribution of activity among its component iso-enzymes. The complete transection of the nerve is responsible for a deep and immediate shift of the enzyme towards the so-called muscle type pattern. Seven days after the nerve section the percentage activity of iso-enzyme 5 is almost three times higher than in the intact nerve. After a short lag period lactate dehydrogenase specific activity (activity/mg protein) undergoes a sharp decrease in transected nerves. The return of the elec…

Ontogenetic variations of some enzymes indicentrarchus labrax(Serranidae)

1989

Abstract The ontogenesis of isozyme patterns of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), glycerol‐3‐phosphate dehydrogenase (α‐GPDH), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G‐6‐PD) and glucosephosphate isomer‐ase (GPI) in Dicentrarchus labrax was studied. ADH is active only in the liver of the adult; a‐GPDH is active in only two tissues in the adult: the A2 isozyme in white skeletal muscle and the B2 isozyme in the liver. Differential gene expression was found only for LDH, MDH and GPI, which have polymeric structure. The LDH, MDH and GPI isozymes 30 days after hatching were completely active and showed patterns very similar to those of the adult. Sp…

The comparative behavior of Lactococcus lactis in free and immobilized culture processes

1998

This study presents the changes in the physiological state of Lactococcus lactis in different actively growing systems. The intracellular pH (pHin), NADH/NAD ratio and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity were measured in free cell batch culture with or without external pH (pHout) control, and in continuous free or immobilized cell reactors. In free cell batch culture it has been shown that the pHin is dependent both on pHout and age of the culture, while in free cell continuous culture the pHin and the pHout are close together. The NADH/NAD ratio varied inversely with the growth rate, which was related to the changes in the metabolic activities in lactococci. The specificity of the immobil…

Inhibition of Plant Lactate Dehydrogenase Isoenzymes by Benzoic Acid and Cinnamic Acid Derivatives

1976

Summary Several phenolic compounds such as derivatives of benzoic and cinnamic acid were investigated with respect to their inhibitory effect on potato tuber lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes. Ki values were determined and it was found that they were in the range of 10−2 M for several benzoic acid derivatives while they were in the range of 10−5 M for several hydroxylated cinnamic acid derivatives such as 3,4-dihydroxy cinnamic acid, p(m)nitrocinnamic acid, and 7,8-dihydroxy-4-methyl coumarin as well as kynurenic acid. Also coumaric acid derivatives revealed a very strong inhibition: The K1 values for coumarin and p-coumaric acid were in the range of 10−4 M. The inhibition by all aromatic co…
