Sodium nitroprusside (SNP, 10(-9)-3x10(-4) M), diethylamine/NO complex (DEA/NO, 10(-9)-10(-4) M) and spermine/NO complex (SPER/NO, 10(-8)-3x10(-4) M) induced concentration-dependent relaxation of isolated rabbit carotid arteries precontracted with KCl (50 mM) or with histamine (3x10(-6) M). 2. In KCl-precontracted arteries the order of potency was SNP=DEA/NO>SPER/NO, and in histamine-precontracted arteries the order of potency was SNP>DEA/NO>SPER/NO. Abstract The influence of diabetes on endothelial mechanisms implicated in the response of isolated rabbit carotid arteries to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5- HT ) was studied. 5-HT induced a concentration–dependent contraction that was potentiated in arteries from diabetic rabbits with respect to that in arteries from control rabbits. Endothelium removal potentiated 5-HT contractions in arteries from both control and diabetic rabbits but increased the maximum effect only in arteries from diabetic rabbits. Previous studies have shown that pineal "synaptic" ribbons and spherules may respond differently under normal and experimental conditions. It has been suggested that the increase in the number of ribbons may be a prerequisite for enhanced melatonin formation. In the present study, the number of ribbons and spherules as well as the level of serum melatonin were monitored over a 24-h period in the male rabbit, the pineal gland of which is known to contain many spherules. It was found that both the number of ribbons and the levels of serum melatonin show the typical nocturnal increase, exhibiting peaks at 02:00 and 06:00 h, respectively. Previous studies have shown that the initial reaction of the rabbit bladder to partial bladder outlet obstruction is increased blood flow at day 1 and a return to baseline blood flow at 1 week. Mucosal and muscle blood flow followed this pattern but mucosal blood flow was always 4 to 5-fold greater. Abstract Objectives. To determine the effect of drainage on rabbit bladder blood flow after 4 weeks of partial outlet obstruction. Previous studies have shown that catheterization and drainage of the urinary bladder in control rabbits resulted in a significant nitric oxide-induced increase of blood flow to the bladder. Abstract The helminth community of the Iberian hare, Lepus granatensis, in the southern Spanish province of Granada was analysed, thorough the study of 487 individuals shot by hunters between November 1998 and October 1999. Six helminth species were found: Mosgovoyia pectinata (Cestoda); Trichostrongylus retortaeformis, Nematodiroides zembrae, Nematodirus sp., Passalurus ambiguus and Micipsella numidica (Nematoda). N. zembrae and M. pectinata (62.4 % and 17.2 %, respectively) were the only component species found. The predominance of helminth species with a direct life cycle is noteworthy. The influence of low frequency (8-10 Hz) electrical stimulation on denervated fast-twitch muscle from rabbit was investigated. Prolonged direct stimulation of denervated muscle resulted in higher oxidative enzyme activities. Furthermore, single fibre analyses for succinate dehydrogenase showed a more uniform distribution of activity in stimulated-denervated muscle when compared to normal muscle. As was also the case following stimulation of innervated muscle, glycolytic enzymes were decreased in activity and the LDH-isozyme pattern was also shifted towards heart type. No change of the myosin light chain pattern could be observed after 56 days of stimulation.
A simplified method to quantitate atherosclerosis in the rabbit aorta.

A simple method to quantitatively evaluate atherosclerosis in the rabbit aorta by measuring macroscopic lesion areas (%) was attempted in the present study. Ten female New Zealand white rabbits were fed on a cholesterol-rich diet (5/1000 g of food) during 4 months. Five of them were oophorectomized at the beginning and all were sacrificed at the end. Total levels of cholesterol increased from 50.7+/-14.7 mg/dl to 782.8+/-296.0. No significant differences were observed between oophorectomized and intact rabbits. At 4 months, the cholesterol-rich diet caused in both, intact and oophorectomized rabbits, atherosclerotic lesions affecting 17 and 46% of the aortic surface, respectively. This meth…

Aim The aim of the study was to evaluate the likeliness for peripheral nerve lesions following extracorporeal shock wave application. Material and method 82 rabbit sciatic nerves were randomized to undergo low-energetic (0.08 mJ/mm2), middle-energetic (0.28 mJ/mm2) or no (controls) shock wave therapy. After 1 to 28 days an independent neuropathologist checked the specimen for signs of neural lesions. Results Only after 14 and 28 days vacuolic swelling of the axons was noted, somewhat pronounced in the middle-energetic group. In no case was there any disruption of the nerve's continuity.
