From Ethnology to Preshistory

Unravelling textural heterogeneity in obsidian:shear-induced outgassing in the Rocche Rosse flow
2016
Obsidian flow emplacement is a complex and understudied aspect of silicic volcanism. Of particular importance is the question of how highly viscous magma can lose sufficient gas in order to erupt effusively as a lava flow. Using an array of methods we study the extreme textural heterogeneity of the Rocche Rosse obsidian flow in Lipari, a 2. km long, 100. m thick, ~. 800. year old lava flow, with respect to outgassing and emplacement mechanisms. 2D and 3D vesicle analyses and density measurements are used to classify the lava into four textural types: 'glassy' obsidian (<. 15% vesicles), 'pumiceous' lava (>. 40% vesicles), high aspect ratio, 'shear banded' lava (20-40% vesicles) and lo…
Cooling and crystallization recorded in trachytic enclaves hosted in pantelleritic magmas (Pantelleria, Italy): Implications for pantellerite petroge…
2015
Abstract This study focuses on the comenditic trachyte enclaves hosted in pantelleritic lava and pumices emplaced during one of the most recent eruptive events at Pantelleria (~ 6 ka). Enclaves range from mm-sized fragments to dm-sized blocks with spheroidal to amoeboid shapes and characteristic globular surfaces; they are crystal-rich with ~ 30 vol% large anorthoclase, less abundant Fe-rich olivine, clinopyroxene and Fe–Ti oxides. Vesicles ranging from a few mm to 1–2 cm in size are distributed throughout the enclave and are commonly filled with microlite-free vesicular glass. The groundmass presents spectacular textures, including fine to coarse spherulites and hopper and skeletal microli…
TMPRSS4: a novel tumor prognostic indicator for the stratification of stage IA tumors and a liquid biopsy biomarker for NSCLC patients
2019
Relapse rates in surgically resected non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients are between 30% and 45% within five years of diagnosis, which shows the clinical need to identify those patients at high risk of recurrence. The eighth TNM staging system recently refined the classification of NSCLC patients and their associated prognosis, but molecular biomarkers could improve the heterogeneous outcomes found within each stage. Here, using two independent cohorts (MDA and CIMA-CUN) and the eighth TNM classification, we show that TMPRSS4 protein expression is an independent prognostic factor in NSCLC, particularly for patients at stage I: relapse-free survival (RFS) HR, 2.42 (95% CI, 1.47&ndash
Accumulation of monoterpenes in shoot-proliferation cultures of Lavandula latifolia Med.
1993
Abstract We studied the effect of osmotic stress (induced by the addition of mannitol to the culture medium) and abscisic acid (ABA) addition on monoterpene accumulative capability in shoot proliferating cultures of Lavandula latifolia Med. The highest shoot elongation was achieved when the elongation medium contained sucrose (3%). Increasing the medium osmolarity or adding 25–50 μM ABA in shoot elongation cultures resulted in a significant increase in monoterpene accumulation in the regenerated shoots. These monoterpenes are qualitatively similar to those produced by the parent plants. Regulation of the conditions that limit the growth in shoot proliferation cultures of L. latifolia should…
Brief an Garlieb H. Merkel
1799
Ms. 930a, Nr. 8, Bl. 22r-23v Böttiger, Karl August. Brief an Garlieb H. Merkel, Weimar, d[en] 13.
Induction of a disintegrin and metalloprotease 33 during embryonic lung development and the influence of IL-13 or maternal allergy.
2009
Background Asthma pathogenesis involves gene and environmental interactions. A disintegrin and metalloprotease 33 (ADAM33)/Adam33 is a susceptibility gene for asthma and bronchial hyperresponsiveness in human beings and mice. ADAM33 is almost exclusively expressed in mesenchymal cells, including mesenchymal progenitors in developing lungs. Objective Because maternal allergy is a risk factor for asthma, we hypothesized that an allergic environment affects ADAM33/Adam33 expression during human and mouse lung development. Methods Human embryonic/fetal lung (HEL) tissues were collected from first-trimester terminations of pregnancy. These were processed immediately or used for explant culture ±…
Expression of the Vitellogenin Gene in the Liver of Juvenile Whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L. s.l.) Exposed to Effluents from Pulp and Paper Mills
1999
Juvenile whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L. s.l.) were exposed by caging in the field to diluted effluents from three operating pulp, paper, and paperboard mills in Southern Lake Saimaa, Finland. The expression of the vitellogenin gene, used as a biomarker of estrogenic contamination of effluents, was measured using a Northern blotting method. Increased mRNA levels, the most specific and reliable evidence for estrogen receptor-mediated actions in vivo, were found in fish caged in the vicinity of one of three mills studied. This mill was found to discharge wood-derived compounds, such as sterols and resin acids, into Lake Saimaa in amounts considerably exceeding those from the other two mills…
Effects of Acute Handling Stress on Whitefish Coregonus lavaretus After Prolonged Exposure to Biologically Treated and Untreated Bleached Kraft Mill …
2000
Exposure of fish to water of impaired quality has been shown to disrupt the function of the hypothalamo-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis and alter the interpretation of data from field studies due to the varying effects of handling and delayed sampling on exposed and reference animals. In the present study, juvenile whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus, were exposed for 6 weeks to diluted (4-8%) untreated and biologically treated bleached kraft mill effluent (BKME) and their response to acute handling was investigated. Liver microsomal EROD activity and glycogen phosphorylase (GPase) activity, in addition to gill Na+-K+-ATPase activity, and blood hemoglobin and hematocrit levels were increased in …
