A phase I-II study on intravesical Gemcitabine in superficial bladder papillary tumors
2004
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: The possible role of gemcitabine inintravesical therapy of superficial transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder (TCCB) has been suggested. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Urological Group validated the use of papillary marker lesion left in the bladder after TUR as the best tool to measure the efficacy of a drug by intravesical route against TCCB. The rsults on 27 patients are herein presented. METHODS: Twenty-seven patients, with recurrent superficial TCCB (Ta-T1, G1-G2), were treated with intravesical gemcitabine for 1 to 3 papillary marker lesions (5-15 mm) left unreseacted after TUR. Twenty-one patients (78%) had recurrent tum…

Necrobiotic xanthogranuloma. Differential diagnosis, treatment and systemic involvement. Case report
2014
Abstract Case report A 48-year-old male was referred to our hospital for further evaluation of eyelid edema with bilateral yellowish ulcerated nodules. Suspecting a xanthogranulomatosis, imaging tests and biopsy were performed with diagnosis of necrobiotic xanthogranuloma. IgG monoclonal gammapathy was diagnosed in a systemic study. Systemic corticosteroids and cyclosporine were initiated unsuccessfully; therefore, intra-lesional injections of triamcinolone were started, which controlled the orbital disease. Discussion Necrobiotic xanthogranuloma is a rare condition that usually affects the eyelids and anterior orbit. Its diagnosis is important as it is associated with malignant lymphoproli…
Is G8 geriatric assessment tool useful in managing elderly patients with metastatic pancreatic carcinoma?
2020
Abstract Aim This paper aims to analyze the usefulness of the G8 geriatric oncology questionnaire in patients with advanced/metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma (aPAC) and its possible association with different clinical outcomes. Methods Patients age > 70 years were screened with the G8 tool and treated with intravenous nab-paclitaxel 125 mg/m2 and gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 for 3 consecutive weeks followed by one-week rest as prescribed after clinical evaluation by treating oncologists. Patient’s charts were evaluated for type and severity of toxicity, 2 cycle rate of completion, discontinuation rate, delays, dose reductions, and other outcomes response rates, progression-free, and overall su…
Chronisches Lidödem assoziiert mit Rosazea (Morbus Morbihan): Differenzialdiagnostische Schwierigkeiten und Therapieoptionen
2011
Background Morbus Morbihan is a rare complication of rosacea, consisting of a persistent lymphoedema of the upper part of the face. It has typically a chronic course, unspecific histopathological findings and an extreme refractoriness to therapy. Patients and methods Between February 2008 and January 2010, 5 patients with Morbus Morbihan were observed at the Department of Ophthalmology of the University Medical Centre Mainz. In the present cohort study, we describe the clinical, laboratory and histological findings that led to the diagnosis. The course of the affection and the results of different therapeutic options are also reported. Results Each patient underwent a complete ophthalmologi…
Toxicity Profile and Adherence to the Pharmacotherapeutic Regimen of Gemcitabine–carboplatin in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer
2011
Objective: To analyse the relationship between doses of gemcitabine---carboplatin (GEM-CARBO) administered and incidence and level of haematological and renal toxicity, and the adherence to the treatment in patients with non-small cell lung cancer. Methods: Retrospective study, which lasted for 37 months. We were able to obtain the minimum set of data needed to carry out the follow-up with the help of Farmis-Oncofarm ® software and the medical and pharmacotherapeutic records. The haematological toxicity was assessed in accordance with the Common Toxicity Criteria 3.0. Renal toxicity was evaluated using serum creatinine levels and creatinine clearance. Results: Thirty-one patients were inclu…
Female Genital Mutilation Consequences and Healthcare Received among Migrant Women: A Phenomenological Qualitative Study
2021
European healthcare systems are increasingly being challenged to respond to female genital mutilation (FGM). This study explores the FGM experiences of migrant women coming from FGM-practicing countries residing in a European host country. A qualitative phenomenological study was carried out and 23 participants were included. Data were collected through 18 face-to-face open-ended interviews and a focus group and were analysed using Giorgi’s four-step phenomenological approach. Three main themes were derived: “FGM consequences”, “healthcare received” and “tackling FGM”. Participants highlighted obstetric, gynaecological and genitourinary consequences such as haemorrhages, perineal tears, cae…
Oral vinorelbine in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer: rationale and implications for patient management.
2007
Vinorelbine is an established treatment for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), both as a single agent and in combination chemotherapy. Recently, an oral form of this agent has been developed. Before accepting an established agent in a different administration form, rigorous testing is required to answer such questions as reliable bioavailability, continued safety and preservation of efficacy. In addition, an oral agent must provide patient convenience and acceptance, while being an economically sound approach. Oral vinorelbine was found to have acceptable and reliable pharmacokinetic profiles at clinically relevant dosage levels. Oral vinorelbine was found to have approximately 40…
A case of guillain-barre syndrome in a patient with non small cell lung cancer treated with chemotherapy
2006
Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a demyelinating polyneuropathy of probable autoimmune pathogenesis characterized by rapidly progressive symmetric paralysis. In the literature some cases of GBS associated with anticancer chemotherapy are reported. We present a case of a 55-year old woman who complained of progressive motor deficit in four limbs, areflexia in lower limbs and facial nerve paralysis one week after beginning cisplatin-gemcitabine chemotherapy for metastatic lung cancer. The cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed a strong positive Pandy reaction with 435 mg/dl total protein. The electromyography and the electroneuronography established the diagnosis of inflammatory demyelinating po…
