Lanthanide complexes as imaging agents anchored on nano-sized particles of boehmite

International audience; The synthesis of boehmite nanoparticles modified with lanthanides (Eu, Tb and Gd) is described. Their synthesis, characterization and in vitro assays with HeLa cells were performed. The nuclear magnetic relaxation dispersion (NMRD) profiles of the two chelating moieties were studied. Imaging data from laser scanning confocal fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry revealed that the nanoscaffolds were taken up by the cells, distributed throughout the cytoplasm and showed no toxicity. This platform could represent an alternative to silica-based inert matrices as imaging vehicles.

Spectroscopic Signature of the Superparamagnetic Transition and Surface Spin Disorder in CoFe2O4 Nanoparticles

Phonons are exquisitely sensitive to finite length scale effects in a wide variety of materials. To investigate confinement in combination with strong magnetoelastic interactions, we measured the infrared vibrational properties of CoFe(2)O(4) nanoparticles and compared our results to trends in the coercivity over the same size range and to the response of the bulk material. Remarkably, the spectroscopic response is sensitive to the size-induced crossover to the superparamagnetic state, which occurs between 7 and 10 nm. To realize high-efficiency thin-film silicon solar cells it is crucial to develop light-trapping methods that can increase absorption of the near- bandgap light in the silicon material. That can be achieved using the far-field scattering properties of metal nanoparticles (MNP) sustaining surface plasmons. The MNPs should be inserted in the back of the cell, embedded in the transparent conductive oxide (TCO) layer which separates the rear mirror from the silicon layers. Molybdenum Trioxide Nanoparticles with Intrinsic Sulfite Oxidase Activity

Sulfite oxidase is a mitochondria-located molybdenum-containing enzyme catalyzing the oxidation of sulfite to sulfate in the amino acid and lipid metabolism. Therefore, it plays a major role in detoxification processes, where defects in the enzyme cause a severe infant disease leading to early death with no efficient or cost-effective therapy in sight. Gold nanostars co-coated with the Cu(II) complex of a tetraazamacrocyclic ligand

The twelve-membered tetraazamacrocyclic ligand L1 bears an appended lipoic acid unit, whose disulphide ring is an efficient grafting moiety for the surface of gold nanostars (GNS). The GNS that were used featured a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption at ∼800 nm, i.e. in the near infrared (NIR). We investigated different approaches for coating them with the Cu(2+) complex of L1. In this study, polymeric monoliths with gold nanoparticles (AuNP@monolith) were investigated as microcartridges for the analysis of protein biomarkers by on-line solid-phase extraction capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (SPE-CE-MS). “Plug-and-play” microcartridges (7 mm) were prepared from a glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-based monolithic capillary column (5 cm x 250 µm i.d.), which was modified with ammonia and subsequently functionalized with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Coupled stochastic dynamics of magnetic moment and anisotropy axis of a magnetic nanoparticle

An algorithm is developed for numerical simulation of coupled stochastic dynamics of magnetic moment and magnetic anisotropy axis of a nanoparticle. Time-correlation functions of the magnetic moment and its components longitudinal and transverse to the magnetic anisotropy axis are calculated by averaging along the stochastic trajectory. The longitudinal and transverse relaxation times are found by fitting the time correlation functions. Existing theoretical relations derived by the effective field approach in the limit of small fields are confirmed. Abstract Background The use of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for diagnostic applications and for drug and gene-delivery is currently under intensive investigation. For such applications, biocompatibility and the absence of cytotoxicity of AuNPs is essential.
