Control of the Properties of Micrometer-Sized Actuators from Liquid Crystalline Elastomers Prepared in a Microfluidic Setup

In this article new results on the preparation of monodisperse particles from a liquid crystalline elastomer in a microfluidic setup are presnted. For this, droplets from a liquid crystalline monomer are prepared in a microfluidic device and polymerized while they are flowing inside a microtube. The parti­cles obtained by this method possess an internal orientation, which gives them actuating properties. When they are heated into the isotropic phase of the liquid crystalline material they show a reversible change in shape whereby they change their length in one direction by almost 100%. <title>Photo-induced structural changes in near-surface layers of chalcogenide semiconductors</title>

Photoinduced structural changes in near-surface layers of amorphous As-Se and As-S films have been investigated using the microhardness method. Microhardness via indentation depth data for as-deposited, illuminated and aged in ambient atmosphere films is presented. The results obtained show that photoinduced increase in microhardness of surface layers up to approximately 1 - 1.5 micrometer are more pronounced in comparison with deeper layers. Increase in microhardness of the investigated films under exposure to atmosphere was also observed. Atmosphere-induced effect was more pronounced in the case of As-S films. Structural studies of nano/micrometric semiconducting GaInP wires grown by MOCVD

Abstract 3D (Ga,In)/GaInP structures were grown on polycrystalline InP substrates by the MOCVD technique. The growth temperature was varied from 600 to 700 °C. Trimethyl-gallium and N 2 were, respectively, used as the Ga source and the carrier gas. These newly presented 3D structures have a scepter-like shape and are composed of a long GaInP internal support (rods of tens of μm long and tens of nm diameter) capped by a micrometer size metallic (Ga,In) structure. Structural and electronic properties of InN nanowire network grown by vapor-liquid-solid method

Growth of InN nanowires have been carried out on quartz substrates at different temperatures by vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) technique using different thicknesses of Au catalyst layer. It has been found that a narrow window of Au layer thickness and growth temperature leads to multi-nucleation, in which each site acts as the origin of several nanowires. In this multi-nucleation regime, several tens of micrometer long wires with diameter as small as 20 nm are found to grow along [ 11 2 ̄ 0 ] direction (a-plane) to form a dense network. Chemical composition of two-photon oxidized graphene

Chemical composition of two-photon oxidized single-layer graphene is studied by micrometer X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Oxidized areas with a size of 2 × 2 μm2 are patterned on graphene by tightly focused femtosecond pulsed irradiation under air atmosphere. The degree of oxidation is controlled by varying the irradiation time. The samples are characterized by four wave mixing (FWM) imaging and Raman spectroscopy/imaging. Micrometer-XPS is used to study local chemical composition of oxidized areas. XPS imaging shows good contrast between oxidized and non-oxidized areas. Detecting Crystalline Nonequilibrium Phases on the Nanometer Scale

The use of Automated electron Diffraction Tomography (ADT) is presented as a novel approach for crystallization studies at the nanometer scale for nonequilibrium phases. Here, ADT was applied to elucidate the structural identity of the recently reported hexagonal morphology of caffeine crystals, which grow only on specific surfaces. Caffeine was crystallized from solution on a specially treated TEM carbon grid. The analysis of ADT data revealed that the lattice parameters of these hexagons match those of the high temperature α- form of caffeine. The evolution of modern power distribution systems into smart grids requires the development of dedicated state estimation (SE) algorithms for real-time identification of the overall system state variables. This paper proposes a strategy to evaluate the minimum number and best position of power injection meters in radial distribution systems for SE purposes. Autocorrelation in meter induction: the role of accent structure.

The performance of autocorrelation-based meter induction was tested with two large collections of folk melodies, consisting of approximately 13 000 melodies for which the correct meters were available. The performance was measured by the proportion of melodies whose meter was correctly classified by a discriminant function. Furthermore, it was examined whether including different melodic accent types would improve the classification performance. Human malignant mesothelioma is recapitulated in immunocompetent BALB/c mice injected with murine AB cells

Malignant Mesothelioma is a highly aggressive cancer, which is difficult to diagnose and treat. Here we describe the molecular, cellular and morphological characterization of a syngeneic system consisting of murine AB1, AB12 and AB22 mesothelioma cells injected in immunocompetent BALB/c mice, which allows the study of the interplay of tumor cells with the immune system.
