Microstructure and mechanical effects of spark plasma sintering in alumina monolithic ceramics

The specific effects of spark plasma sintering (SPS) on the creep behavior, microstructure and mechanical properties of alumina monolithic ceramic were investigated. SPS introduces strains that concentrate at grain boundaries and inhibit crack growth, resulting in an improvement in the flexural strength and fracture toughness. However, creep blocks grain boundary movements and decreases the reliability of the material. These strains can be removed by a post-sintering thermal treatment, which plays an important role in the distribution of dislocations.

Femtosecond laser has been proposed as a method for conditioning zirconia surfaces to boost bond strength. However, metallic or ceramic bracket bonding to femtosecond lasertreated zirconia surfaces has not been tested. Labelled cells were consistently observed in the medial cortex of the lizard brain after i.p. injections of tritiated thymidine (5 microCi/g b. wt.), 1, 7, 18 or 28 days of survival and posterior autoradiographic evaluation. In 3 groups of specimens (postnatal, young and adult) of the species Podarcis hispanica, after one day of survival, labelled cells were located in the ependymal cell layer underlying the medial cortex. After intermediate survival times (7, 18 days), labelled cells were found in 3 zones: the ependymal layer, the inner plexiform layer and the granular layer. Cells considered to be migratory in the cerebral cortex of adult lizards are ultrastructurally of two types. Nuclei in the first type have highly dispersed chromatin, creating a spongy appearance, whereas in the second type the chromatin is irregularly clumped. Both types of cells are closely associated with processes of radial ependymal glia cells, which perhaps orient their migratory pathways. Cells with spongy chromatin show an increase in cytoplasmic organelles and progressive chromatin condensation as they travel from the ependymal layer to the granular layer. The morphology, ultrastructure, and principal synaptic input of longspined neurons located in the inner plexiform layer of the medial cortex in three related species of lizards is described. Golgi impregnations have been used to define the external morphology of these neurons and their axonal trajectories. Their most striking characteristic is the presence of very long spines or “microdendrites” especially abundant on the distal dendritic segments. Axons have ascendent trajectories, pass through the cell layer, and ramify in the outer plexiform layer. The morphology and laminar distribution of immunolabeled neurons in the medial and dorsomedial telencephalic cortices of the lizard Podarcis hispanica were examined in vibratome sections after preembedding γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-immunocytochemistry. In both cortical areas and at all rostrocaudal levels, GABA-immunoreactive neurons were found in all cortical layers, with the largest number (74%) of GABA-positive cells in layer 3. Structural and Chemical Characterization of Cerium Oxide Thin Layers Grown on Silicon Substrate

In this study, we report transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy study of cerium oxide thin layers deposited on silicon substrate. Transmission electron microscopy experiments have revealed the flat morphology of the deposited layers. In addition, studies of high resolution images have indicated the presence of mainly ceria crystallized nanoparticles. Energy electron loss spectroscopy measurements were also performed in scanning mode to study the evolution of the cerium valence. In addition to Ce4+ inside the layer, the presence of amorphous cerium silicate with valence +3 is pointed out at the vicinity of the substrate.

Abstract During the catalytic combustion of naphthalene, compounds other than CO 2 are often obtained. These products, as polymerized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, oxygenated aromatic compounds and benzene derivate compounds, are usually more toxic than naphthalene. At the present work it is shown a nanocrystalline cerium oxide prepared by a combustion method employing a proper ethylene glycol concentration that exhibits very high activity in the decomposition of naphthalene in the presence of air and, most importantly, a selectivity value towards CO 2 of 100% for any range of conversions and/or temperatures used. Abstract Glassy carbon (GC) substrates were treated by the oxygen plasma over several periods of time. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) study showed the dramatic influence of oxygen plasma on the morphology of glassy carbon. The treatment leads to the formation of nanostructured surface, which consists of well separated rod-like nanostructures oriented perpendicularly to the substrate surface. The surface roughness was found to increase with increasing treatment time. The in vitro and in vivo anti- Trypanosoma cruzi activity of the pyrazole-containing macrobicyclic polyamine 1 and N-methyl- and N-benzyl-substituted monocyclic polyamines 2 and 3 was studied. Activity against both the acute and chronic phases of Chagas disease was considered. The compounds were more active against the parasite and less toxic against Vero cells than the reference drug benznidazole, but 1 and 2 were especially effective, where cryptand 1 was the most active, particularly in the chronic phase.
