3D reconstruction of the hemocyanin subunit dimer from the chiton Acanthochiton fascicularis.

2004

Procedures are presented for the purification of the subunit dimer from Acanthochiton fasicularis hemocyanin. Electron microscopy of negatively stained specimens revealed a uniform population of macromolecules possessing the characteristic "boat shape". A 3D reconstruction from this EM data generated a approximately 3 nm resolution model that correlates well with earlier data of the purported subunit dimer, extracted from the 3D reconstruction of the didecamer of Haliotis tuberculata hemocyanin type 1.

The effect of wavelet and discrete cosine transform compression of digital radiographs on the detection of subtle proximal caries. ROC analysis.

2007

The study compared diagnostic performances of 2 different image compression methods: JPEG (discrete cosine transform; Joint Photographic Experts Group compression standard) versus JPEG2000 (discrete wavelet transform), both at a compression ratio of 12:1, from the original uncompressed TIFF radiograph with respect to the detection of non-cavitated carious lesions. Therefore, 100 approximal surfaces of 50 tooth pairs were evaluated on the radiographs by 10 experienced observers using a 5-point confidence scale. Observations were carried out on a standardized viewing monitor under subdued light conditions. The proportion of diseased surfaces was balanced to approximately 50% to avoid bias. Tr…

Synthesis and Spectroscopic Properties of Silica−Dye−Semiconductor Nanocrystal Hybrid Particles

2010

We prepared silica-dye-nanocrystal hybrid particles and studied the energy transfer from semiconductor nanocrystals (= donor) to organic dye molecules (= acceptor). Multishell CdSe/CdS/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystals were adsorbed onto monodisperse Stöber silica particles with an outer silica shell of thickness 2-23 nm containing organic dye molecules (Texas Red). The thickness of this dye layer has a strong effect on the energy transfer efficiency, which is explained by the increase in the number of dye molecules homogeneously distributed within the silica shell, in combination with an enhanced surface adsorption of nanocrystals with increasing dye amount. Our conclusions were underlined by…

Nonlinear dynamics of a two-photon Fabry–Pérot laser

2000

Abstract The steady-state emission, stability and temporal dynamics of a single-mode two-photon laser with a Fabry–Perot cavity is investigated and compared with that of a ring-cavity laser. It is found that the Fabry–Perot cavity makes the laser less efficient than the ring cavity because of spatial hole burning, but the domain of stability is larger for the Fabry–Perot laser. The intensity and phase dynamics are numerically investigated and distinctive features are found in the phase dynamics as compared with one-photon lasers.

Veranderungen in drainagefernen Muskelbezirken konnten lichtmikr…

Preliminary results on the electrostatic double-layer force between two surfaces with high surface potentials

1998

Abstract The aim of this study is to measure interaction forces between surfaces with high electric potentials in aqueous electrolyte solutions. Therefore the force between a gold sample and a gold sphere attached to the end of an atomic force microscope cantilever was measured. Gold sample and sphere were electrically connected and served as the working electrode. A potential was applied via a platinized platinum electrode. Experimental results are compared to forces approximated with the Poisson-Boltzmann theory.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ ligands regulate neural stem cell proliferation and differentiation in vitro and in vivo.

2011

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) belongs to a family of ligand-activated nuclear receptors and its ligands are known to control many physiological and pathological situations. Its role in the central nervous system has been under intense analysis during the last years. Here we show a novel function for PPARγ in controlling stem cell expansion in the adult mammalian brain. Adult rats treated with pioglitazone, a specific ligand of PPARγ, had elevated numbers of proliferating progenitor cells in the subventricular zone and the rostral migratory stream. Electron microscopy analysis also showed important changes in the subventricular zone ultrastructure of pioglitazone-t…

Magnetic resonance imaging of the migration of neuronal precursors generated in the adult rodent brain

2006

Neural progenitor cells (NPCs) reside within the subventricular zone (SVZ) in rodents. These NPCs give rise to neural precursors in adults that migrate to the olfactory bulb (OB) along a well-defined pathway, the rostral migratory stream (RMS). Here we demonstrate that these NPCs can be labeled, in vivo, in adult rats with fluorescent, micron-sized iron oxide particles (MPIOs), and that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect migrating neural precursors carrying MPIOs along the RMS to the OB. Immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy indicated that particles were inside GFAP(+) neural progenitor cells in the SVZ, migrating PSA-NCAM(+) and Doublecortin(+) neural precursors within the …

Recombinant cDNA encapsulation in small liposomes with hepatocyte access ability.

1993

Liposomal encapsulation efficiency of a recombinant cDNA was studied by several procedures. We observed that supernatant fraction of ultracentrifuged liposomes prepared by extrusion through polycarbonate filters of 400 nm pore size yielded a very homogeneous suspension of small (50 nm diameter) unilamellar liposomes with highest DNA/lipid ratio and great ability to access to hepatocytes.

Medium-Term Culture of Primary Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma in a Three- Dimensional Model: Effects on Cell Survival Following Topical 5-Fluororacile …

2012

Since the activity of several conventional anticancer drugs is restricted by resistance mechanisms and dose-limiting side-effects, the design of formulations for local application on malignant lesions seems to be an efficient and promising drug delivery approach. In this study, the effect of locally applied 5-FU on cell death was evaluated both in a SCC4/HEK001 model and in a newly proposed 3D outgrowth model of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Initially, the optimal drug dose was established by delivery of solutions containing different amounts of 5-FU. The solution containing 1% (w/v) of 5-FU resulted effective in inducing cell death with complete eradication of cell colonies. Buccal …
