Effective Linear Friction Welding Machine Redesign through Process Analysis
2014
Linear friction welding is a solid-state joining process developed for non-axisymmetric components in which the joining of the specimens is obtained through reciprocating motion and pressure. In the process, the friction forces work due to the high frequency oscillation and the pressure between the specimens is converted in thermal energy. In order to design an effective machine, relevant issues derive from the high frequency and the large inertial forces involved in the process. In this study, the authors describe the redesign of a preexisting prototypal machine for LFW processes. A machine redesign is needed when welding high resistant materials, i.e. steels or titanium alloys, with high …
Biophysical Characterization of Polysialic Acid—Membrane Nanosystems
2019
Polysialic acid (polySia) is a long, membrane-bound, polyanionic polymer (with the degree of polymerization, DP, up to 400) of negatively charged sialic acid monomers. Biological roles of polySia are based on its ability to modulate repulsive and attractive interactions, and its ability to modulate membrane surface charge density, pH at the membrane surface, and membrane potentials. PolySia is used in anti-bacterial and anti-cancer therapies, and in neural tissue repair. Hydrophobically-modified polySia chains can form nano-structures (micelles or liposomes) with high stability and low toxicity for drug delivery. The analysis, based on the Goldman-Hodgkin-Katz equation, of transmembrane pot…
Re-visitando a Federica Montseny : Una lectura de la Victoria y sus lecturas
2006
This article wants to be a close reading of La Victoria, Federica Montseny’s novel published in 1925, in order to achieve two objectives: on the one hand, to break down the clichés that normally appear in Montseny’s work –her “revolutionary melodrama”- as a perfect example of the eternal “ethic-aesthetic” paradox and, on the other hand, to point out the capability of this kind of study to dynamize the so-called “women’s literature” in the context of the XX Century Spanish literature.
Integrability Conditions: Recent Results in the Theory of Integrable Models
1990
This paper reports various results achieved recently in the theory of integrable models. These are summarised in the Fig.1! At the Chester meeting [1] two of the authors were concerned [1] with the local Riemann-Hilbert problem (double-lined box in the centre of Fig.1), its limit as a non-local Riemann-Hilbert problem used to solve classical integrable models in 2+1 dimensions (two space and one time dimensions) [2,3], and the connection of this Riemann-Hilbert problem with Ueno’s [4] Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with the representation of the algebra gl(∞) in terms of Z⊗Z matrices (Z the integers) and the solution of the K-P equations in 2+1. We were also concerned [1] with the const…

Anticancer Activity, Reduction Mechanism and G-Quadruplex DNA Binding of a Redox-Activated Platinum(IV)–Salphen Complex
2022
Aiming at reducing the unselective cytotoxicity of Pt(II) chemotherapeutics, a great deal of effort has been concentrated into the design of metal-containing drugs with different anticancer mechanisms of action. Inert Pt(IV) prodrugs have been proposed to be a valid alternative as they are activated by reduction directly into the cell releasing active Pt(II) species. On the other hand, a promising strategy for designing metallodrugs is to explore new potential biological targets rather than canonical B-DNA. G-quadruplex nucleic acid, obtained by self-assembly of guanine-rich nucleic acid sequences, has recently been considered an attractive target for anticancer drug design. Therefore, comp…
Calorimetric investigation of the interaction between a macromolecular prodrug of diflunisal and human platelets
1995
The thermal effect due to the interaction between human platelets and α,β poly(N-hydroxy-ethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA) or the PHEA-Diflunisal conjugate was measured by the calorimetric technique at 25°C. The experimental data confirm that PHEA is a biocompatible macromolecule and that its conjugate influences the physiological activity of human platelets.
Macromolecular Prodrugs Based on Synthetic Polyaminoacids: Drug Delivery and Drug Targeting in Antitumor Therapy
2011
In the last twenty years a depth study on potential pharmaceutical applications of synthetic polymers at proteinlike structure as carrier for macromolecular prodrug production has been performed in academia and in industry. In particular α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA), α,β-polyaspartylhydrazide (PAHy), poly(glutamic acid) (PGA), poly(aspartic acid) (PAA) and polylysine (PLL) have been extensively studied in this field. In the present review, the use of PHEA, PAHy, PGA as starting materials to prepare macromolecular prodrugs is reported and drug delivery and targeting aspects have been considered.
