An easy and safe training method for trunk function improves mobility in total knee arthroplasty patients: A quasi-randomized controlled trial

2018

Objective Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is aimed mainly at reducing pain and restoring mobility. However, mobility deficits can persist even longer than 1 year. The trunk function and movement velocity of any region have been recently recognized to be critical for determining mobility in older people. Therefore, the main goal of this quasi-randomized trial is to clarify the effectiveness of a novel training method, the seated side tapping (SST) training, for improving mobility by focusing on movement velocity of trunk function in the short term after TKA. Methods SST training consists of side trunk movements repeated as quickly as possible in a seated position. All participants after TKA we…

Effect of biomechanical footwear on upper and lower leg muscle activity in comparison with knee brace and normal walking

2021

Abstract Aim To evaluate the activity of knee stabilizing muscles while using custom-made biomechanical footwear (BF) and to compare it when walking barefoot and with a knee brace (Unloader®). Methods Seventeen healthy working-aged (mean age: 29 years; standard deviation: 8 years) individuals participated. The knee brace was worn on the right knee and BF in both legs. Surface electromyography (sEMG) data was recorded bilaterally from vastus medialis (VM), semitendinosus (ST), tibialis anterior (TA) and lateral gastrocnemius (LG) muscles during walking, and repeated-measures ANOVA with a post-hoc t-test was used to determine differences between the different walking modalities (barefoot, bra…

Correction: Association of ionizing radiation dose from common medical diagnostic procedures and lymphoma risk in the Epilymph case-control study

2020

International audience; Medical diagnostic X-rays are an important source of ionizing radiation (IR) exposure in the general population; however, it is unclear if the resulting low patient doses increase lymphoma risk. We examined the association between lifetime medical diagnostic X-ray dose and lymphoma risk, taking into account potential confounding factors, including medical history. The international Epilymph study (conducted in the Czech-Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain) collected self-reported information on common diagnostic X-ray procedures from 2,362 lymphoma cases and 2,465 frequency-matched (age, sex, country) controls. Individual lifetime cumulative bone mar…

DVWA gene polymorphisms and osteoarthritis

2015

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joints disorder influenced by genetic predisposition. We reported that rs11718863 DVWA SNP was represented in Sicilian with a more severe Kellgren and Lawrence (KL) radiographic grade, displaying its predictive role as OA marker progression. Here, we describe the DVWA SNPs: rs11718863, rs7639618, rs7651842, rs7639807 and rs17040821 probably able to induce protein functional changes. Findings: Sixty-one Sicilian patients with knee OA and 100 healthy subjects were enrolled. Clinical and radiographic evaluation was performed using AKSS scores and KL. Linkage Disequilibrium (LD) analyses were performed in order to verify whether the SNPs segrega…

Dietary Protein Intake and Falls in Older People: Longitudinal Analyses From the Osteoarthritis Initiative.

2019

Objectives: Literature regarding dietary protein intake and risk of falls is limited to a few studies with relatively small sample sizes and short follow-ups, which have reported contrasting findings. Thus, we investigated whether dietary protein intake is associated with risk of falls in a large cohort of North American adults. Design: Data were drawn from the Osteoarthritis Initiative, a cohort study, with 8 years of follow-up. Setting and participants: Community-dwelling adults with knee osteoarthritis or at high risk for this condition. Methods: Dietary protein intake was recorded using the Block Brief 2000 food frequency questionnaire and categorized using gender-specific quartiles (Q)…

Low-dose vitamin D supplementation and incident frailty in older people: An eight year longitudinal study.

2018

Hypovitaminosis D is associated with frailty, but if vitamin D supplementation may prevent the onset of frailty is poorly known. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether vitamin D supplementation is associated with a lower risk of frailty. In this longitudinal study, 4,421 individuals at high risk or having knee osteoarthritis free from frailty at baseline (mean age: 61.3, females = 58.0%) were followed for 8 years. Details regarding vitamin D supplementation were captured by asking whether the participant took vitamin D during the previous year, at least once per month. Frailty was defined using the Study of Osteoporotic Fracture (SOF) index as the presence of at least two of the followi…

The condition of the contralateral knee may induce different degrees of knee extensor strength asymmetry and affect functionality in individuals with…

2020

Abstract Background Loss of knee extensor strength in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) may induce inter-limb strength asymmetries and alter functionality. The aims were to analyse whether the condition of the uninvolved knee (advanced to severe KOA or no affection) may induce different degrees of knee extensor strength asymmetry in individuals with KOA and to study whether functionality may differ in cases of unilateral or bilateral KOA. Methods Sixty-eight subjects with advance-to-severe KOA were categorized into two groups (unilateral or bilateral KOA). The knee extensor strength ratio (KESR), and self-reported and performance-based functionality were analysed and compared. Sex …

Expression of heme oxygenase-1 and regulation by cytokines in human osteoarthritic chondrocytes

2003

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is implicated in the protection against tissue injury. We investigated the expression of this protein in cartilage sections and chondrocytes obtained from osteoarthritic patients. HO-1 was immunodetected in preparations from cartilage and also in chondrocytes cultured in the absence of stimulation. We found that HO-1 can be modulated by cytokines since the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-17 and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) down-regulated this protein, whereas the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 exerted the opposite effect. Our results suggest a role for HO-1 as part of protective mechanisms against tissue injury in human cartilage.

A novel cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitor modulates catabolic and antiinflammatory mediators in osteoarthritis.

2004

ITB (6-(p-bromophenyl)amino-7-(p-chlorophenyl)indazolo[2',3':1,5]-1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-a]-1,3,5-benzotriazepine) is a novel inhibitor of cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) with antiinflammatory activity in animal models. In the present study, we investigated the effect of this compound on the production of catabolic or antiinflammatory mediators in osteoarthritis (OA) cartilage. In OA cartilage explants, ITB inhibited the production of prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13) in a concentration-dependent manner, whereas nitrite was partially reduced. On the contrary, ITB increased the production of interleukin (IL)-10 and the expres…

Tissue evacuated during joint replacement procedure as a source of mononuclear cells.

2017

Background Different cell populations from bone marrow were used in various clinical trials for cardiac diseases during last decade. Four clinical studies are ongoing in our institution and enroll patients with cardiac diseases, coronary disease, type 2 diabetes, and osteoarthritis. The density gradient is used to separate bone marrow mononuclear cells. Joint replacement procedures were associated with significant loss of tissue. Usually, excess tissue as bone marrow, peripheral blood and fat are removed to clean operation site. The aim of this study is to prove whether removed tissue during joint replacement procedure can be considered as a significant source of mononuclear cells. Methods …
