Pressures, rewards and teacher retention: a comparative study of primary teaching in England and Finland
2004
The article presents some findings from the York‐Jyvaskyla Teacher Professionalism project. The project was a follow‐up study to earlier case‐study research in six schools in Finland and six schools in England on the impact of educational reforms on teachers' work. Data were collected by re‐interviewing a sample of teachers from the original schools six years later. The views of English and Finnish teachers concerning the ways in which changes in practice, pay and working conditions affected their perception of teaching as a profession are contrasted. The crucial factors discouraging teachers from remaining in teaching were work intensification, low pay, deteriorating pupil behaviour and a …

The purpose of this PhD thesis is to understand how French nurses are groomed. We will focus on their initial training. Firstly, a socio-historical approach of the emergence of this professional group will enlighten its internal dynamics especially regarding the institutional education. The training is held by senior nurses, who define the specific tasks and duties of nurses. In a second step, starting from a qualitative and localized fieldwork, we will aim at understanding the recruitment and socialization of student nurses. Recruiting obviously begins with the nursing school entrance examination but co…
Qualittssicherung in der notrztlichen Fortbildung
1996

09. The Professional Form of Recognition in Social Work
2015
In this paper the theory of recognition is applied to the context of social work, where relations of recognition can easily be strained due to the differences in status, power, and vulnerability to stigmatization. A specific form of recognition suitable for professional contexts is outlined and defended.
