Abstract Faults diagnosis in air conditioning systems is a crucial activity, since malfunctions may induce heavy degradation of performance. Among the available techniques, thermoeconomic diagnosis has played a marginal role due to the difficulties encountered when applying the methodology to refrigeration plants. In this paper a critical analysis on capabilities and limits of thermoeconomic diagnosis is proposed. The reference plant is a 120 kWc air-cooled air conditioning system; a simulator is used to evaluate thermodynamic data under normal and faulty conditions, setting up “virtual experiments” to simulate each fault. Method of quantitative analysis of filler dispersion in composite systems with spherical inclusions

In this work, a quantitative analysis method for the estimation of filler dispersion degree of filler particles in composite systems is presented and described. According to the procedure offered dispersion of filler particles of any form is associated with their area and the dispersion parameter D is defined as the probability to fall in a certain range of the particle area distribution. The method has been applied to both model and real systems characterized by different dispersion levels and various filler content. Abstract The feasibility of a double immunoassay of haptens by the nonisotopic carbonyl metalloimmunoassay (CMIA) method is demonstrated. Three different pairings of antiepileptic medications from the groups carbamazepine, diphenylhydantoin, and phenobarbital (for each of which a mono-CMIA is already available) were assayed by double CMIA. The assay method employs as tracers metal–carbonyl complexes that give very strong signals in the range of 1850–2200 cm −1 in the infrared spectrum, permitting quantitative analysis by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Quantification of Listeria monocytogenes in salads by real time quantitative PCR

Abstract A real time quantitative PCR (RTQ-PCR) was carried out purifying DNA extracts of Listeria monocytogenes using a High Pure Listeria Sample Preparation Kit and quantifying in a LightCycler system with hybridisation probes. A standard curve was constructed with serial dilutions. A range linear relationship, from 10 to 10 5 L. monocytogenes colony forming units (CFU), was observed between threshold cycle ( C t ) and logarithmic concentration of the serial dilutions. Review: Highlights in recent applications of electronic tongues in food analysis

This paper examines the main features of modern electronic tongues (e-tongues) and their most important applications in food analysis in this new century. The components of an e-tongue (automatic sampler, array of chemical sensors, and data processing system) are described. Applications commented include process monitoring, freshness evaluation and shelf-life investigation, authenticity assessment, foodstuff recognition, quantitative analysis, and other quality control studies. Finally, some interesting remarks concerning the strengths and weaknesses of e-tongues in food analysis are also mentioned.

Comparative study of reflectance cells for PLS-FTIR determination of sugars in soft drinks

A comparative study has been carried out between a horizontal Attenuated Total Reflectance (h-ATR) cell and a Cylindrical Internal Reflection (CIR) cell (CIRCLE cell). Both cells were employed for the determination of glucose, fructose, sucrose and total sugar in soft drinks and fruit juices using absorbance measurements at two resolution values (4 and 8 cm–1). Data were processed by Partial Least Squares regression (PLS). Using a resolution of 4 cm–1, mean relative errors of prediction from 0.6% to 1.3% were obtained using the horizontal-ATR and from 0.6% to 2.8% using the CIRCLE cell resulting in a limit of detection from 0.03% in the case of sucrose to 0.21% for total sugar for the h-ATR…

Determination of methamphetamine in urine samples with sodium 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulphonate

Optimal conditions have been studied for the determination of methamphetamine in urine samples by an extractive-spectrophotometric method with sodium 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulphonate (NQS) as reagent. These conditions are: NaHCO3 pH 10, NQS 6.3 × 10−3 mol/l and heating for 5 min at 45°C. The accuracy and precision of the method were tested. The detection limits were 0.2 mg/l in the standard and 0.9 mg/l when 5 ml of urine sample were taken. The standard deviation of blank urine was evaluated from 12 different samples. The relative errors found in the determination of methamphetamine in urine were lower than 10% if the methamphetamine-amphetamine ratio was higher than 4.
