Point Mutation Rate of Bacteriophage ΦX174

Abstract The point mutation rate of phage ΦX174 was determined using the fluctuation test. After identifying the genetic changes associated with the selected phenotype, we obtained an estimate of 1.0 × 10−6 substitutions per base per round of copying, which is consistent with Drake's rule (0.003 mutations per genome per round of copying in DNA-based microorganisms).

Isolation and characterization of 10 highly polymorphic di- and trinucleotide microsatellite markers in the mayfly Ameletus inopinatus (Ephemeroptera…

We describe the isolation of ten polymorphic microsatellite loci from the mayfly Ameletus inopinatus. Loci had di- or trinucleotide repeat motifs and were highly variable with three to 17 alleles (mean = 7.15). Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.143 to 0.905. One locus (Ami_202) showed significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium in one population, but no evidence for null alleles. One locus (Ami_73) was significantly linked with three other loci. The remaining nine loci should prove highly informative for population genetic studies.

Genetic basis of trichome production in Arabidopsis lyrata.

Leaf trichomes may protect plants against herbivorous insects, and may increase tolerance to drought and UV-radiation. The perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata (Brassicaceae) is polymorphic for trichome production and occurs in a glabrous and trichome-producing form. In addition, there is quantitative variation in trichome density among trichome-producing plants. Isolation and characterization of 11 polymorphic trinucleotide microsatellite markers in the stonefly Arcynopteryx compacta (Plecoptera: Perlodidae).

We describe the isolation of 11 polymorphic trinucleotide microsatellite loci from the stonefly Arcynopteryx compacta. Loci were highly variable with 3 to 14 alleles (mean = 6.45). Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0 to 0.867. Seven loci showed significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium across both populations. There was no evidence for null alleles, and thus, Hardy–Weinberg departures could have resulted from genetic structure between populations or subpopulations. No linkage between loci was found. The 11 loci should prove highly informative for population genetic studies.

Il lavoro della presente tesi ha riguardato lo studio della capacità di Trichoderma harzianum di crescere in presenza di mercurio. L’obiettivo principale era quello di comprendere i meccanismi biomolecolari coinvolti nella risposta metabolica allo stress indotto da mercurio in T. harzianum. E’ stato studiato l’accrescimento radiale su piastra in terreno colturale agarizzato in presenza di cadmio e mercurio e il peso secco del micelio del fungo accresciutosi in terreno colturale liquido nelle medesime condizioni. BackgroundGenome reduction is a common evolutionary process affecting bacterial lineages that establish symbiotic or pathogenic associations with eukaryotic hosts. Redox regulation of genome stability by effects on gene expression, epigenetic pathways and DNA damage/repair

Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (e.g. H2O2, nitric oxide) confer redox regulation of essential cellular signaling pathways such as cell differentiation, proliferation, migration and apoptosis. In addition, classical regulation of gene expression or activity, including gene transcription to RNA followed by translation to the protein level, by transcription factors (e.g. NF-κB, HIF-1α) and mRNA binding proteins (e.g. GAPDH, HuR) is subject to redox regulation. This review will give an update of recent discoveries in this field, and specifically highlight the impact of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species on DNA repair systems that contribute to genomic stability. Comparison of necrotoxigenic Escherichia coli isolates from farm animals and from humans.

Abstract Necrotoxigenic Escherichia coli (NTEC) isolated from animals and humans can belong to the same serogroups/types and produce or carry the genes coding for fimbrial and afimbrial adhesins of the same family, P, S, F17, and/or AFA, raising the question of a potential zoonotic source of human infection. The main purpose of this study was to compare 239 NTEC1 strains (45 from cattle, 65 from humans and 129 from piglets) and 98 NTEC2 strains from cattle, using a uniform and standardized typing scheme. Recovery of time-dependent coefficients from boundary data for hyperbolic equations

We study uniqueness of the recovery of a time-dependent magnetic vector-valued potential and an electric scalar-valued potential on a Riemannian manifold from the knowledge of the Dirichlet to Neumann map of a hyperbolic equation. The Cauchy data is observed on time-like parts of the space-time boundary and uniqueness is proved up to the natural gauge for the problem. The proof is based on Gaussian beams and inversion of the light ray transform on Lorentzian manifolds under the assumptions that the Lorentzian manifold is a product of a Riemannian manifold with a time interval and that the geodesic ray transform is invertible on the Riemannian manifold.

A comparison theorem for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a domain in a Kaehler submanifold

AbstractWe give a sharp lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem on a domain of a complex submanifold of a Kaehler manifold with curvature bounded from above. The bound on the first eigenvalue is given as a function of the extrinsic outer radius and the bounds on the curvature, and it is attained only on geodesic spheres of a space of constant holomorphic sectional curvature embedded in the Kaehler manifold as a totally geodesic submanifold.
