Organics versus clastics: conditions necessary for peat (coal) development

Abstract The absence or lack of detrital influx into ancient peat-forming swamps is critical to the formation of low-ash coal. Modern and ancient coal-forming swamps of continental basins show a separation of peat and clastic sediments which is partially fault controlled. In the African rift valleys as well as in the Stephanian intermontane coal basins of France, thick peat free from clastic input may be the result of tectonic activity. In the paralic basins of Morocco (Westphalian B) and Nigeria (Late Cretaceous) coal occur landward of the shoreline turnaround and are related to a relative high stand of the sea, which curtailed detrital influx into the basins. Maģistra darbā tiek pētīta ekstensīvās lasīšanas ietekme uz skolēnu spēju veikt lasīšanas uzdevumus. Teorētiskajā daļā tiek izklāstīts lasīšanas jēdziens; darbā apskatītas pamatskolas skolēnu problēmas lasīšanā, kā arī ekstensīvās lasīšanas loma, tekstu izlases kritēriji un efektīvas lasīšanas stratēģijas. Šī darba mērķis ir palīdzēt vidējā zināšanu līmeņa skolēniem apgūt lasīšanas stratēģijas. Darba praktiskajā daļā sniegts pārskats par pilotpētījumu: eksperimentālā grupa lasīja ekstensīvi un pielietoja praksē lasīšanas stratēģijas. Maģistra darbā “Ārtelpas video aktivitātes kā iekļaujošs mācību līdzeklis svešvalodu apguvē pusaudžiem” tiek pētīta svešvalodas apguves vēsture un patreizējās tendences, kā arī ārtelpas aktivitātes kā svešvalodas apguvi veicinošs mācību līdzeklis nodarbībās pusaudžiem. Datu ieguvei par ārtelpas aktivitāšu laikā iegūtajiem rezultātiem pētījumā tiek izmantots formatīvais skolotāja vērtējums un skolēna pašvērtējums. Pētījuma mērķis ir atklāt saistības starp ārtelpas video aktivitāšu sniegtajiem svešvalodas apguves rezultātiem un skolēnu pašvērtējumu un skolotāja vērtējumu. Diplomdarbs tika izstrādāts, lai padziļinātu izpratni par “Es protu apgalvojumu” izmantošanu kā pašvadītu mācīšanās prasmju novērtēšanas instrumenta faktisko pielietojumu un lai noteiktu, vai tas palīdz uzlabot skolēnu angļu valodas sasniegumus. Diplomdarba mērķis bija izpētīt, kā pašvadītas mācīšanās “Es protu apgalvojumus” var izmantot angļu valodas stundās, lai uzlabotu skolēnu angļu valodas sniegumu 4. klasē. Conflictos ambientales y ciudadanía ecológica: el caso de Gualeguaychú y los pulp mills

This article deals with interactions between citizenship and political ecology by examining the ‘pulp mills conflict’ in Gualeguaychú, Argentina. The conflict burst in 2003 when the Uruguayan authorities announced the construction of a cellulose plant on the shore of the Uruguay River. The citizens of Gualeguaychú, a city right across the border, initiated a movement of protest that soon transcended the local dimension. I argue that this protest was a battle over sovereignty and an environmental conflict between different conceptions of development and diverse views of the use of a common resource, the river. The aim of the paper is to present the results of a pilot project for foreign language (FL) teacher education, in which trainee teachers’ knowledge and awareness of intercultural and cross-educational similarities and differences between two cooperating institutions from socio-culturally and linguistically distant countries – Israel and Poland – are elicited. As pointed out in Chapter 1, this volume is a response to the recent calls for research on learner and teacher beliefs that would be not only contextual and longitudinal, but also interconnected. In early 2014 the foreign and security policy discourse in the Baltic region was transformed as a resurgent and assertive Russia annexed Crimea and launched covert operations in eastern Ukraine.1 Observers were quick to point out that events in Ukraine eerily paralleled the 1940 occupation of the Baltic states. The traditional security concerns about Russian intentions in the region that the Baltic states had increasingly suppressed over the previous 20 years once again rushed to the surface. The post-existential era of Baltic foreign and security policy that had marked the decade that followed accession to the EU and NATO seemed to have come to an end.
