Comparison of electron diffraction data from non-linear optically active organic DMABC crystals obtained at 100 and 300 kV

2000

During the recent past, we have synthesized a new class of molecules with intramolecular two-dimensional charge transfer upon excitation. The present report presents such a molecule, 2,6-bis(4-dimethylamino-benzylidene)-cyclohexanone (DMABC), with an unusually high value of the second-order non-linear optical (NLO) coefficients. In order to optimize the macroscopic NLO properties of the compounds, it is necessary to relate their first hyperpolarizability tensors at a molecular level to those at a crystal bulk level. This requires a complete structure determination and refinement. However, the growth of sufficiently large single crystals, which are needed for structural analysis and refineme…

Time-of-flight photoemission electron microscopy – a new way to chemical surface analysis

2001

Abstract The time structure of synchrotron radiation at BESSY I (Berlin) was utilised to operate a photoemission electron microscope in the time-of-flight mode. The electrons that are emitted from the sample surface with different energies are dispersed in a drift tube subsequent to the imaging optics. Two ways of fast image detection have been explored, a fast gated intensified CCD camera (800 ps gate time) and a special counting electronics in combination with a 3D (x,y,t)-resolving delay line detector ( time resolution ps). The latter device has a lateral resolution of about 50 μm in the image plane being equivalent to 1000 pixels along the image diagonal. An energy resolution of 400 meV…

"Sweet Chemistry": a Green Way for Obtaining Selenium Nanoparticles Active against Cancer Cells

2017

We present an environment friendly synthesis of selenium nanoparticles and the study of their cytotoxic activity against uterine sarcoma cancer and fibroblasts cells. Amorphous selenium (a-SeNPs) and trigonal selenium (t-SeNPs) were synthesized using D-fructose as the reducing agent and characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), powder X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES), dynamic light scattering (DLS) to obtain zeta potential values and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Particularly, a-SeNPs presented high toxicity toward the resistant cancer cell line MES-SA/…

Recent advances in on-line liquid chromatography - infrared spectrometry (LC-IR)

2010

We review advances in isocratic and gradient liquid chromatography hyphenated on-line with infrared spectrometry (LC-IR). We place special emphasis on chemometric background correction and other applications of chemometric algorithms used to improve the sensitivity and the resolution of LC-IR signals. We also comment on recent technical advances, (e.g., dedicated flow-cells and new light sources) and review applications in the technological, cosmetics, environmental and food sectors.

On-line gradient liquid chromatography–Fourier transform infrared spectrometry determination of sugars in beverages using chemometric background corr…

2008

Abstract An on-line gradient reversed phase liquid chromatography–Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (LC–FTIR) method was developed for the determination of fructose, glucose, sucrose and maltose in beverages. Improved chromatographic resolution was obtained using a linear gradient from 75 to 55% (v/v) acetonitrile in water in 15 min. Changes in the background spectra were corrected employing “univariate background correction based on the use of a reference spectra matrix” (UBC-RSM) and using the ratio of absorbance (AR) at 2256 and 2253 cm −1 for the identification of the eluent spectra within the RSM. The method provided limits of detection in the order of 0.75 mg ml −1 . The precisi…

The e-ASTROGAM gamma-ray space observatory for the multimessenger astronomy of the 2030s

2018

e-ASTROGAM is a concept for a breakthrough observatory space mission carrying a gamma-ray telescope dedicated to the study of the non-thermal Universe in the photon energy range from 0.15 MeV to 3 GeV. The lower energy limit can be pushed down to energies as low as 30 keV for gamma-ray burst detection with the calorimeter. The mission is based on an advanced space-proven detector technology, with unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, combined with remarkable polarimetric capability. Thanks to its performance in the MeV-GeV domain, substantially improving its predecessors, e-ASTROGAM will open a new window on the non-thermal Universe, making pioneering observations of the…

Absolute optical chiral analysis using cavity-enhanced polarimetry

2021

Chiral analysis is central for scientific advancement in the fields of chemistry, biology, and medicine. It is also indispensable in the development and quality control of chiral compounds in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Current methods for chiral analysis, namely optical polarimetry, mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance, are either insensitive, have low time resolution, or require preparation steps, and so are unsuited for monitoring chiral dynamics within complex environments: the current need of both research and industry. Here we present the concept of absolute optical chiral analysis, as enabled by cavity-enhanced polarimetry, which allows for accurate unambi…

Total Synthesis of (±)-Oxalicumone C and Chiral Resolution and Elucidation of Its Absolute Configuration

2014

The racemic total synthesis, the chiral resolution, and the elucidation of the absolute configuration of the natural product oxalicumone C were investigated. The goal was achieved by a synthetic strategy beginning with the synthesis of a 5-hydroxy-7-methylchromone precursor. Further modification possibilities were achieved by introduction of a vinyl moiety into the chromone, which was based on a selective iodination step in the 3-position. Further transformations furnished the racemic natural product. To determinate the absolute configuration of naturally occurring oxalicumone C, both enantiomers were separated by chiral HPLC. Comparison of the calculated and experimental vibrational circul…

Improved synthesis of Bn5CpRu(CO)2Cl and its application as racemization catalyst in preparative-scale metalloenzymatic dynamic kinetic resolution of…

2010

An improved gram-scale synthesis of Bn5CpRu(CO)2Cl is reported based on heating of pentabenzylcyclopentadiene with Ru3(CO)12 at 160 °C under argon atmosphere in mesitylene followed by addition of chloroform, continued heating, and evaporation of the solvents. Subsequent washing of unreacted ligand precursor with hexane provided pure title compound in 77 % yield. In combination with Candida antarctica lipase B (CAL-B) (Novozym 435), this complex forms a highly active racemization catalyst for metallo-enzymatic dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) of secondary alcohols as demonstrated in the present work by converting 100 g of racemic 1-phenylethanol to (R)-1-phenylethanol in >99 % ee and 93 %…
