Copper(i) complexes for sustainable light-emitting electrochemical cells

2011

Four prototype heteroleptic copper(I) complexes [Cu(bpy)(pop)][PF6] (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine, pop = bis(2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl)ether), [Cu(phen)(pop)][PF6] (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), [Cu(bpy)(pdpb)][PF6] (pdpb = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene) and [Cu(phen)(pdpb)][PF6] are presented. The synthesis, X-ray structures, solution and solid-state photophysical studies, and the performance in light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) of these complexes are described. Their photophysical properties are interpreted with the help of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The photophysical studies in solution and in the solid-state indicate that these copper(I) complexes show good lu…

Ruthenium-Containing Block Copolymer Assemblies: Red-Light-Responsive Metallopolymers with Tunable Nanostructures for Enhanced Cellular Uptake and An…

2015

The use of self-assembled nanostructures consisting of red-light-responsive Ru(II)-containing block copolymers (BCPs) for anticancer phototherapy is demonstrated. Three Ru-containing BCPs with different molecular weights are synthesized. Each BCP contains a hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) block and an Ru-containing block. In the Ru-containing block, more than half of the side chains are coordinated with [Ru(2,2':6',2''-terpyridine)(2,2'-biquinoline)](2+) , resulting in more than 40 wt% Ru complex in the BCPs. The Ru complex acts as both a red-light-cleavable moiety and a photoactivated prodrug. Depending on their molecular weights, the BCPs assemble into micelles, vesicles, and large comp…

Porous inorganic–organic hybrid material by oxygen plasma treatment

2011

In this paper, we present the pore formation on inorganic–organic hybrid material, ORMOCER©, by reactive ion etching. ORMOCERs are composed of inorganic backbone where organic side groups are attached by cross-linking. Etching of ORMOCER in oxygen plasma generates porous materials with different pore sizes depending on the etching parameters. In addition to planar films, this pore formation process is applicable to micro and nanostructures. Characteristics of porous materials are evaluated by contact angle measurement, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy, time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis and Rutherford backscatte…

Ultralow-intensity near-infrared light induces drug delivery by upconverting nanoparticles

2014

Mesoporous silica coated upconverting nanoparticles are loaded with the anticancer drug doxorubicin and grafted with ruthenium complexes as photoactive molecular valves. Drug release was triggered by 974 nm light with 0.35 W cm(-2). Such low light intensity minimized overheating problems and prevented photodamage to biological samples.

Atomic layer deposition of Ru films from bis(2,5-dimethylpyrrolyl)ruthenium and oxygen

2012

Abstract Ru thin films were grown on hydrogen terminated Si, SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , HfO 2 , and TiO 2 surfaces by atomic layer deposition from bis(2,5-dimethylpyrrolyl)ruthenium precursor and oxygen. The 4–20 nm thick films on these surfaces consisted of nanocrystalline hexagonal metallic ruthenium, regardless of the deposition temperature. At the lowest temperatures examined, 250–255 °C, the growth of the Ru films was favored on silicon, compared to the growth on Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 and HfO 2 . At higher temperatures the nucleation and growth of Ru became enhanced in particular on HfO 2 , compared to the process on silicon. At 320–325 °C, no growth occurred on Si–H and SiO 2 -covered silicon. Res…

Atomic Layer Deposition of Ruthenium Films from (Ethylcyclopentadienyl)(pyrrolyl)ruthenium and Oxygen

2011

Ru films were grown by atomic layer deposition in the temperature range of 275―350°C using (ethylcyclopentadienyl)(pyrrolyl)ruthenium and air or oxygen as precursors on HF-etched Si, SiO 2 , ZrO 2 , and TiN substrates. Conformal growth was examined on three-dimensional silicon substrates with 20:1 aspect ratio. ZrO 2 promoted the nucleation of Ru most efficiently compared to other substrates, but the films roughened quickly on ZrO 2 with increasing film thickness. The minimum number of cycles required to form continuous and conductive metal layers could be decreased by increasing the length of the oxygen pulse. In order to obtain well-conducting Ru films growth to thicknesses of at least 8―…

Infrared spectroscopy of ruthenium tetroxide and high-resolution analysis of the ν3 band

2015

Abstract RuO 4 is a heavy tetrahedral molecule which has practical uses for several industrial fields. Due to its chemical toxicity and the radiological impact of its 103 and 106 isotopologues, the possible remote sensing of this compound in the atmosphere has renewed interest in its spectroscopic properties. New, higher resolution FTIR spectra have been recorded at room temperature, using an isotopic pure sample of 102 RuO 4 and a sample with all stable isotopes present in natural abundance. We reinvestigate here the strong ν 3 stretching fundamental region and perform new assignments and effective Hamiltonian parameter fits for the five main isotopologues ( 99 RuO 4 , 100 RuO 4 , 101 RuO …

Supramolecular Approach in Energy Conversion Devices

2020

This review summarizes investigations carried out at the Laboratory of Photochemistry and Energy Conversion (LFCE) in the University of Sao Paulo dealing with design and characterization of ruthenium(II), rhenium(I) and iridium(III) polypyridine complexes with desired photochemical and photophysical properties in light of the development of optoelectronics and photoinduced energy conversion systems. First, the breakthroughs on molecular engineering of emissive ReI, RuII and IrIII complexes for the development of highly efficient light-emitting devices, such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs), are presented. Then, the photochemical and ph…

Numerical analysis of light soaking phenomenon in Ruthenium based Dye Sensitized Solar Cells

2017

Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) are widely considered one of the most promising third generation photovoltaic devices, especially thanks to their relatively low cost if compared to conventional solar cells. An interesting phenomenon affecting such devices is the so-called light soaking effect, consisting in the increase of cell main electrical parameters after the exposition to solar light. In this work, starting from the experimental characterization carried out on Ruthenium-based DSSCs, we report on a series of numerical analysis performed to better describe the above-mentioned light soaking effect in order to show the relationship between such phenomenon and the main physical paramete…

Investigation of recovery mechanisms in dye sensitized solar cells

2016

Abstract We study the spontaneous recovery phenomenon displayed by solar cells sensitized with a ruthenium complex-based dye N719, which manifests with the increase over the time (from several minutes up to some days) of the short circuit current density J sc and the open circuit voltage V oc , during cell illumination. Under dark conditions the current decreases over time after the application of forward bias voltages. We investigate the effects of temperature and electrolyte composition by means of current–voltage measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, both under dark and illumination conditions. The main result is that the recovery of the performances depends on the cha…
