Atmospheric and astrophysical neutrinos above 1 TeV interacting in IceCube
2015
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory was designed primarily to search for high-energy (TeV--PeV) neutrinos produced in distant astrophysical objects. A search for $\gtrsim 100$~TeV neutrinos interacting inside the instrumented volume has recently provided evidence for an isotropic flux of such neutrinos. At lower energies, IceCube collects large numbers of neutrinos from the weak decays of mesons in cosmic-ray air showers. Here we present the results of a search for neutrino interactions inside IceCube's instrumented volume between 1~TeV and 1~PeV in 641 days of data taken from 2010--2012, lowering the energy threshold for neutrinos from the southern sky below 10 TeV for the first time, far bel…
Chirality transfer and chiral turbulence in gauge theories
2020
Chirality transfer between fermions and gauge fields plays a crucial role for understanding the dynamics of anomalous transport phenomena such as the Chiral Magnetic Effect. In this proceeding we present a first principles study of these processes based on classical-statistical real-time lattice simulations of strongly coupled QED $(e^2N_f=64)$. Our simulations demonstrate that a chirality imbalance in the fermion sector triggers chiral plasma instabilities in the gauge field sector, which ultimately lead to the generation of long range helical magnetic fields via a self-similar turbulent cascade of the magnetic helicity.
The ATLAS detector control system
2012
The ATLAS experiment is one of the multi-purpose experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, constructed to study elementary particle interactions in collisions of high-energy proton beams. Twelve different sub detectors as well as the common experimental infrastructure are controlled and monitored by the Detector Control System (DCS) using a highly distributed system of 140 server machines running the industrial SCADA product PVSS. Higher level control system layers allow for automatic control procedures, efficient error recognition and handling, manage the communication with external systems such as the LHC controls, and provide a synchronization mechanism with the ATLAS data …
Muon multiplicities measured using an underground cosmic-ray array
2016
EMMA (Experiment with Multi-Muon Array) is an underground detector array designed for cosmic-ray composition studies around the knee energy (or similar to 1 - 10 PeV). It operates at the shallow depth in the Pyhasalmi mine, Finland. The array consists of eleven independent detector stations similar to 15 m(2) each. Currently seven stations are connected to the DAQ and the rest will be connected within the next few months. EMMA will determine the multiplicity, the lateral density distribution and the arrival direction of high-energy muons event by event. The preliminary estimates concerning its performance together with an example of measured muon multiplicities are presented.
Dual Hydrogen Bond - Enamine Catalysis Enables a Direct Enantioselective Three-Component Domino Reaction
2011
A dual system, composed of an enantioselective enamine catalyst and a multiple-hydrogen-bond catalyst achieves the three-component enantioselective aldehyde—nitroalkene—aldehyde domino reaction using either two similar or two different aldehydes.
SCADA Intrusion Detection System Test Framework
2017
Master's thesis Information- and communication technology IKT590 - University of Agder 2017 Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems play an important role in our critical infrastructure (CI). Several of the protocols used in SCADA communication are old and lack of security mechanisms. This master thesis presents a SCADA Intrusion Detection System Test Framework that can be used to simulate SCADA traffic and detect malicious network activity. The framework uses a signature-based approach and utilize two different IDS engines, Suricata and Snort. The IDS engines include rule-sets for the IEC 60870-5-104, DNP3 and Modbus protocols. The IDS engines ships detected events to a di…
The reason for a project that was never performed: Alvar Aalto and the residential complex in Pavia (1966-68)
2015
This paper aims to analyze the characteristics of the project for the residential complex "Patrizia" in Pavia by Alvar Aalto (1966-1968). Although not realized, for political and economic reasons, the project offers an interesting example of urban planning in an “organic key”. In particular, this paper aims to contextualize the project of Aalto in the broader context of the residential building in Italy after World War II, when the problems of reconstruction and "home" are the heart of the debate on architecture. The project, in fact, takes place in the years immediately following the experiments of the social housing plan INA CASA (1949-63), which - with differences in design and architect…
In situ formation of pyronin dyes for fluorescence protease sensing
2017
International audience; We report a reaction-based strategy for the fluorogenic detection of protease activity. Based on the "covalent-assembly" probe design principle recently put forward by the Yang group for detection of Sarin related threats (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2014, 136, 6594-6597), we have designed two unusual nonfluorescent caged precursors (mixed bis-aryl ethers) which are readily converted into a fluorescent unsymmetrical pyronin dye through a domino cyclisation-aromatisation reaction triggered by penicillin G acylase (PGA) or leucine aminopeptidase (LAP). Fluorescence-based in vitro assays and HPLCfluorescence/- MS analyses support the claimed activation mechanism whose the furthe…
A Novel Enzyme-Triggered Domino Reaction Producing Fluorescent Quinoxalin-2(1H)-One-Based Heterocycles
2020
A simple and effective biocompatible domino reaction triggered by a model protease and leading to formation of strongly fluorescent quinoxalin-2(1H)-one N-heterocycles is described. Some positive attributes including versatility and ability to provide outstanding fluorescence "OFF-ON" responses were revealed by this work. They open the way for practical applications of this novel type of "covalent-assembly" based fluorescent probes in the fields of sensing and bioimaging.; A simple and effective biocompatible domino reaction triggered by a model protease and leading to formation of strongly fluorescent quinoxalin-2(1H)-one N-heterocycles is described. Gold(I)-catalysed cascade reactions in the synthesis of 2,3-fused indole derivatives.
2015
A gold(I)-catalysed hydroaminative/arylative cascade for the efficient synthesis of a variety of indole-fused skeletons has been developed. Factors controlling the catalyst loading required in these transformations involving 1,3-unsubstituted indole intermediates have been revealed, allowing isolation of an unprecedented 1,3-dimetallated 3H-indole gold complex characterized by X-ray diffraction.
