CD166 expression in dentigerous cyst, keratocystic odontogenic tumor and ameloblastoma.

2015

Background CD166 is a glycoprotein of an immunoglobulin super family of adhesion molecules that has been associated with aggressive characteristics and high recurrence rate of tumors. Different odontogenic lesions exhibit considerable histological variation and different clinical behavior. In an attempt to clarify the mechanisms underlying this different behavior, the present study investigates the immunohistochemical expression of CD166 in these lesions. Material and Methods In this study 69 formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded tissue blocks of odontogenic lesion consist of 15 unicystic ameloblastoma (UA), 17 solid ameloblastoma (SA), 18 keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOT), and 19 dentiger…

Primary intra-osseous Hybrid Schwannoma-Perineurioma in the mandible

2020

Benign nerve sheath tumours include perineuriomas, schwannomas and neurofibromas. Hybrid schwannoma-perineurioma represents a cutaneous, subcutaneous or occasionally intra-osseous tumour with schwannian cytomorphology and perineurioma-like architecture consisting of a mixture of both types of cells. These tumours can develop at any age and there is no gender-predilection. Tongue is the most frequently affected site, followed by palate, mouth floor, jugal mucosa, lips and, more rarely, mandible. We present a case of hybrid tumour with schwannoma-perineurioma morphology located on the right mandibular body (intra-osseous) of a 54-year-old female patient. The tumour was symptomatic and evolvin…

Immunohistochemical expression of Bcl-2 in benign and malignant salivary gland tumors

2010

Objectives: The present study was undertaken to assess and compare the immunohistochemical expression of Bcl-2 in selected benign and malignant salivary gland tumors. Study Design: A total of 50 cases of buffered formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded tissues of previously diagnosed cases of benign and malignant salivary gland tumors from the archives of Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Microbiology, SDM College of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Dharwad, India, were taken for the study. The immunohistochemical staining procedure was performed using monoclonal anti Bcl-2 antibody, as directed by the manufacturer. Results: Thirty six cases (72%) out of 50 cases showed a positive e…

SOX2 and BCL-2 Expressions in Odontogenic Keratocyst and Ameloblastoma

2020

Background The purpose of this experimental study was to compare the immunohistochemical expression of SOX2 and BCL-2 in Odontogenic Keratocyst (OKC) and Ameloblastoma (AB) specimens, and to identify a possible correlation in their expression. Material and Methods Immunohistochemical analysis was performed to evaluate SOX2 and BCL-2 expression in OKC (n = 20) and AB (n = 20). The immunoexpression was analyzed by a quantitative and qualitative scoring system. The comparison between the immunoexpression of SOX 2 and BCL-2 was assessed by the Mann-Whitney U-test. Spearman’s correlation coefficient evaluated the correlation between SOX2 and BCL-2 expressions. Results SOX2 and BCL-2 expression w…

S100α and S100β proteins in human cutaneous sensory corpuscles: Effects of nerve and spinal cord injury

1998

S100 protein in the vertebrate peripheral nervous system consists of homo- or heterodimers of S100α and S100β proteins, the first predominating in neurons and the second in glial cells. Recently, however, occurrence of S100β protein in neurons has been reported. The expression of S100 protein by Schwann cells, as well as their derivatives in sensory corpuscles, depends on the sensory axon (i.e., the Schwann cell–axon contact). The present study analyzed the distribution of S100α and S100β proteins in human cutaneous sensory corpuscles and the effects of peripheral or central sensory axon severance in the expression of these proteins. Simple or double immunohistochemistry was carried out usi…

Primary biliary cirrhosis and hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia: When two rare diseases coexist

2013

Primary biliary cirrhosis is a slowly progressive cholestatic autoimmune liver disease that mainly affects middle- aged women with an estimated prevalence ranging from 6.7 to 402 cases per million. Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, or Rendu-Osler-Weber disease, is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by angiodysplastic lesions (telangiectases and arteriovenous malformations) that can affect many organs, including liver, with a prevalence of 1-2 cases per 10000. We describe the coexistence, for the first time to our knowledge, of these two rare diseases in a 50-year old Caucasian woman. In this setting, the relevance of an accurate medical history, the role of liver histology an…

Papulo-purpuric dermatitis of childhood: a distinct PLEVA-like eruption associated to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Clinical, histopathological and immunohis…

2021

Abstract We observed ten children with a papular eruption with purpuric features during the SARS‐CoV‐2 pandemic in Northern Italy (May‐December 2020). Histological examination showed signs of SARS‐CoV‐2‐related dermatosis. Evidence of nucleocapsid viral proteins using SARS‐CoV‐2 (2019‐nCoV) nucleocapsid antibody revealed cuticular staining of the deep portion of the eccrine glands in all cases.

Silver Impregnation of Alzheimer's Neurofibrillary Changes Counterstained for Basophilic Material and Lipofuscin Pigment

1988

A method is described in which selective silver staining of Alzheimer's neurofibrillary changes is combined with staining of cell nuclei, Nissl material, and lipofuscin granules. Formalin fixed, paraffin embedded sections of human autopsy tissue are silver stained according to a method proposed by Gallyas. Lipofuscin is stained by crotonaldehyde fuchsin following performic acid oxidation. Nissl substance is visualized by either Darrow red or gallocyanin-chrome alum staining. Architectonic units showing the specific pathology and the neuronal types prone to develop the neurofibrillary changes can be recognized using this technique.

Comparative expression of cyclooxygenase 2 and Ki67 in amelanotic and conventional oral melanomas

2020

Background Oral melanomas have some histopathological resemblance with its cutaneous counterpart; however, an aggressive behavior is more common in tumors that occur in the oral cavity. Several markers have been suggested as indicative of tumoral progression and aggressiveness, such as cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) and Ki67. Material and Methods In this study, we have compared the expression of COX-2 and Ki67 in a series of amelanotic (n=7) and melanotic oral melanomas (n=22). The cases were selected from 4 pathology laboratories and submitted to the immunohistochemical (IHC) reactions. We analyzed the IHC staining based on a qualitative – using visual scores; and a computer-assisted method (qua…

Extracellular space and electrolyte distribution in cortex and white matter of dog brain in cold induced oedema

1973

24 hours after a circumscribed cold injury of the cortex dog brains were perfused from the lateral ventricle and the frontal subarachnoidal space to the cisterna magna with an artificial CSF containing trace amounts of35S-labelled thiosulphate. Simultaneously the extracellular tracer was administered intravenously. Extracellular fluid volume was estimated and found to be increased from 10 to 15% in the oedematous cortex and from 10 to 27% in the oedematous white matter. The actual size of ECS in oedematous white matter, however, must be larger as indicated by the relative alterations of thiosulphate distribution, tissue water, sodium and chloride. Apparently a small part of the fluid accumu…
