Energy recovery from rectangular weirs in wastewater treat-ment plants

Hydraulic turbines for energy recovery in wastewater treatment plants, with relatively large discharges and small head jumps, are usually screw or Kaplan types. In the specific case of a small head jump (about 3 m) underlying a rectangular weir in the major Palermo (Italy) treat-ment plant, a traditional Kaplan solution is compared with two other ones: a Hydrostatic Pres-sure Machine (HPM) located in the upstream channel and a cross-flow turbine located in a specif-ic underground room downstream the same channel.
Cryopreservation of Limonium serotinum apical meristems from in vitro plantlets using droplet-vitrification

Abstract In this study in vitro shoot tips of a Sicilian genotype of Limonium serotinum were successfully cryopreserved using the droplet-vitrification technique. Growth recovery of cryopreserved shoot tips was possible only when samples were pretreated for 16 h in liquid medium with 0.3 M sucrose, then for 5 h in liquid medium with 0.7 M sucrose before performing the cryopreservation protocol. Next-Day Bitcoin Price Forecast

This study analyzes forecasts of Bitcoin price using the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and neural network autoregression (NNAR) models. Employing the static forecast approach, we forecast next-day Bitcoin price both with and without re-estimation of the forecast model for each step. For cross-validation of forecast results, we consider two different training and test samples. In the first training-sample, NNAR performs better than ARIMA, while ARIMA outperforms NNAR in the second training-sample. Effect of Hydrostatic Pressure on the Phase Transitions of {N(CH3)4}2ZnCl4-xBrxMixed Crystals

Single crystals of the solid solution system {N(CH 3 ) 4 } 2 ZnCl 4- x Br x have been prepared in a low x region, and the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the phase transitions were measured for x =0.2 and 0.3. The normal-to-incommensurate phase transition temperatures increase linearly with increasing pressure with the rates of 0.126 K/MPa and 0.129 K/MPa for x =0.2 and 0.3 crystals, respectively. The ferroelectric III phase disappears at about 60 MPa for x =0.2 crystal. On the other hand, phase III is not observed for the x =0.3 crystal both at 0 pressure and at high pressures. In the present work biocompatible quercetin and curcumin nanovesicles were developed as a novel approach to prevent and restore skin tissue defects on chronic cutaneous pathologies. Stable and suitable quercetin- and curcumin-loaded phospholipid vesicles, namely liposomes and penetration enhancer-containing vesicles (PEVs), were prepared. Vesicles were made from a highly biocompatible mixture of phospholipids and alternatively a natural polyphenol, quercetin or curcumin. Reliable and effective virtual high-throughput screening (vHTS) methods are desperately needed to minimize the expenses involved in drug discovery projects. Here, we present an improvement to the negative image-based (NIB) screening: the shape, the electrostatics, and the solvation state of the target protein’s ligand-binding site are included into the vHTS. Additionally, the initial vHTS results are postprocessed with molecular mechanics/generalized Born surface area (MMGBSA) calculations to estimate the favorability of ligand-protein interactions. In this paper the use of fiber optic sensors embedded into GFRP laminates for structural health monitoring of thermo-mechanical loads is presented. A DC and small signal AC model for organic thin film transistors including contact effects and non quasi static regime

Abstract We present a compact model for the DC and small signal AC analysis of Organic Thin Film Transistors (OTFTs). The DC part of the model assumes that the electrical current injected in the OTFT is limited by the presence of a metal/organic semiconductor junction that, at source, acts as a reverse biased Schottky junction. By including this junction, modeled as a reverse biased gated diode at source, the DC model is able to reproduce the scaling of the electrical characteristics even for short channel devices. Relaxation phenomena in mixed isomeric alcohols by Mandelstam-Brillouin scattering

Mandelstam-Brillouin scattering data in mixed isomeric alcohols n-pentanol (nPe-OH) and 2-methyl-2-butanol (2Me-2BuOH) are presented. The hypersonic velocity and normalized absorption are measured as a function of the scattering angle, in the temperature range from - 15-degrees-C to + 45-degrees-C, and as a function of n-PeOH molar fraction going from the pure n-PeOH to the pure 2Me-2BuOH. The experimental results confirm the existence of a shear relaxation phenomenon in the GHz region, that has been previously detected in pure liquids.
